Superelastic shape memory alloys with an integration of large elastocaloric response and good cyclability are crucially demanded for the advancement of solid-state elastocaloric cooling technology. In this study, we demonstrate a giant elastocaloric effect with improved cyclic stability in a <001> textured polycrystalline (NiMnTi)B alloy developed through directional solidification. It is shown that large adiabatic temperature variation (|Δ|) values more than 15 K are obtained across the temperature range from 283 K to 373 K.

Grain growth for various texture components in silicon steel was investigated via experiments and modeling. It was found that the clustered spatial arrangement of grains with specific orientations significantly altered the local environment for grain growth and consequently resulted in texture-differentiated grain size distribution (GSD) evolution. A novel local-field model was proposed to describe grain growth driven by continuous changing orientation and size distribution of adjacent grains.

This research investigates the recognition of basketball techniques actions through the implementation of three-dimensional (3D) Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), aiming to enhance the accurate and automated identification of various actions in basketball games. Initially, basketball action sequences are extracted from publicly available basketball action datasets, followed by data preprocessing, including image sampling, data augmentation, and label processing. Subsequently, a novel action recognition model is proposed, combining 3D convolutions and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to model temporal features and capture the spatiotemporal relationships and temporal information of actions.

Reconstructive phase transitions involving breaking and reconstruction of primary chemical bonds are ubiquitous and important for many technological applications. In contrast to displacive phase transitions, the dynamics of reconstructive phase transitions are usually slow due to the large energy barrier. Nevertheless, the reconstructive phase transformation from β- to λ-TiO exhibits an ultrafast and reversible behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • HPV is a virus that doesn't have an outer shell, and it can cause serious health problems like certain kinds of cancers (like cervical and oral cancer).
  • The proteins E6 and E7 from HPV play a big role in how the virus makes cells grow and act in ways that can lead to tumors.
  • Understanding how E6 and E7 work and affect other pathways in the body is important for finding ways to diagnose and treat HPV-related cancers.

Impacts of Mn alloying on lattice stabilities, magnetic properties, electronic structures of the bcc and fcc phases and the fcc→bcc phase transition in Fe16-xMnx (x = 0, 1 and 2) alloys are studied by first-principles calculations. Results show that the doped Mn atom prefers ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interaction with the host Fe atoms in the bcc and fcc phases, respectively. In these two phases, the magnetic moment of Mn is smaller and larger than Fe, respectively.

Solar steam interfacial evaporation represents a promising strategy for seawater desalination and wastewater purification owing to its environmentally friendly character. To improve the solar-to-steam generation, most previous efforts have focused on effectively harvesting solar energy over the full solar spectrum. However, the importance of tuning joint densities of states in enhancing solar absorption of photothermal materials is less emphasized.

In this paper, indium tin oxide/silver indium/indium tin oxide (ITO/AgIn/ITO) composite films were deposited on glass substrates by magnetron sputtering. The effects of the sputtering temperature on the optical and electrical properties of the composite films were systematically investigated. The ITO/AgIn/ITO composite films deposited at sputtering temperatures of 25 °C and 100 °C demonstrated a high reflectivity of 95.

Giant magnetostriction could be achieved in MnCoSi-based alloys due to the magneto-elastic coupling accompanied by the meta-magnetic transition. In the present work, the effects of hydrostatic pressure on magnetostrictive behavior in MnCoNiSi alloy have been investigated. The saturation magnetostriction (at 30,000 Oe) could be enhanced from 577 ppm to 5034 ppm by the hydrostatic pressure of 3.

In the extraoral approach for mandibular fractures, facial scars and facial nerve injury are common complications. Herein, we introduce an improved surgical technique to reduce fragments of infected comminuted mandibular fractures with the assistance of computer software. Firstly, the model was reset by 3-dimensional (3D) printing, and then the titanium plate was reconstructed on the model.

Large magnetic field-induced strains can be achieved in modulated martensite for Ni-Mn-In alloys; however, the metastability of the modulated martensite imposes serious constraints on the ability of these alloys to serve as promising sensor and actuator materials. The phase stability, magnetic properties, and electronic structure of the modulated martensite in the NiMnIn alloy are systematically investigated. Results show that the 6M and 5M martensites are metastable and will eventually transform to the NM martensite with the lowest total energy in the NiMnIn alloy.

Taking the Chinese city of Xiamen as an example, simulation and quantitative analysis were performed on the transmissions of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the influence of intervention combinations to assist policymakers in the preparation of targeted response measures. A machine learning model was built to estimate the effectiveness of interventions and simulate transmission in different scenarios. The comparison was conducted between simulated and real cases in Xiamen.

Large magnetostrain can be demonstrated in Ni-Mn-X (X = In, Sn, Sb) meta-magnetic shape memory alloys by resuming the predeformed martensite through magnetic-field-induced reverse martensitic transformation. However, owing to the constraint from the self-accommodated microstructure and randomly distributed crystallographic orientation, spontaneous magnetostrain without predeformation in polycrystalline alloys remains low. Here, by combining microstructure texturing and superelastic training, enhanced spontaneous magnetostrain was achieved in a directionally solidified Ni44.

Epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga thin films have been extensively investigated, due to their potential applications in magnetic micro-electro-mechanical systems. It has been proposed that the martensitic phase in the <1 1 0>A-oriented film is much more stable than that in the <1 0 0>A-oriented film. Nevertheless, the magnetic properties, microstructural features, and crystal structures of martensite in such films have not been fully revealed.

Here, we present an effective strategy to achieve a giant elastocaloric response by enlarging the lattice volume change Δ/ upon the martensitic transformation. Using the NiMn binary alloy as the prototype, a large transformation entropy change Δ can be tailored in the vicinity of room temperature by simultaneously doping Cu and Ga.

Matrix microstructure and texture controlling is an important way to optimize Goss ({110}<001>) abnormal grain growth (AGG) in high magnetic induction grain-oriented silicon (Hi-B) steel during primary recrystallization. In the present work, a matrix with homogeneous grain size and favorable texture components was obtained through two-stage normalized annealing followed by primary recrystallization. Furthermore, secondary recrystallization was performed for sharp Goss orientation by slow heating and purified annealing.

Sharp Goss texture ({110}<001>) was successfully produced in the sheets by rapid secondary recrystallization induced by nanosized NbC particles at low temperatures. Numerous NbC precipitates (size ~90 nm) were obtained after hot rolling, intermediate annealing, and primary recrystallization annealing.
