Despite growing concerns over mercury (Hg) accumulation in birds in recent decades, little is known about Hg exposure in nocturnal migratory birds. Here, total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were detected in the feathers of nocturnal migratory birds (n = 286, belonging to 46 species) passing through Mount Ailao in Southwest China. The stable isotope ratios of carbon (δC) and nitrogen (δN) were also determined to clarify the effects of trophic position, foraging guild, and foraging behavior on Hg bioaccumulation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the impact of spatial resolution in nanoindentation mapping of metallic glasses (MGs) by analyzing how normalized indentation spacing affects measured hardness and elastic modulus.
  • Results show that there is no significant correlation in hardness and modulus when the spacing exceeds a certain threshold (d/h > 10), while slight increases are observed at lower spacings (d/h < 10), followed by a notable decrease at even smaller spacings (d/h < 5).
  • The research utilized scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to analyze residual indents, concluding that the optimal spatial resolution for nanoindentation in MGs is around 200 nm, promoting better studies of their structural heterogeneity.

In Arabidopsis thaliana, the female gametophyte consists of two synergid cells, an egg cell, a diploid central cell, and three antipodal cells. CYTOKININ INDEPENDENT 1 (CKI1), a histidine kinase constitutively activating the cytokinin signaling pathway, specifies the central cell and restricts the egg cell. However, the mechanism regulating CKI1-dependent central cell specification is largely unknown.

The hypoxic tumor microenvironment, a fundamental feature of solid tumors, drives hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression through regulating the transcriptional activities of protein-coding and noncoding genes. However, long noncoding RNA (lncRNA)-mediated HCC progression in hypoxic microenvironment remains largely unknown yet. In this study, we found that LINC00674 was upregulated under hypoxic conditions in a HIF-1-dependent manner, and the occupancy of HIF-1 to HRE of LINC00674 gene promoter was essential for its transcription.

Both Src homology-2 domain-containing phosphatase 2 (SHP2) and histone deacetylase (HDAC) are important oncoproteins and potential immunomodulators. In this study, we first observed a synergistic antiproliferation effect of an allosteric SHP2 inhibitor (SHP099) and HDAC inhibitor (SAHA) in MV4-11 cells. Inspired by this result, a series of SHP2/HDAC dual inhibitors were designed based on the pharmacophore fusion strategy.

Clostridium novyi alpha-toxin (Tcnα) is a potent exotoxin that induces severe symptoms including gas gangrene, myositis, necrotic hepatitis, and sepsis. Tcnα binds to sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAG) for cell-surface attachment and utilizes low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) for rapid entry. However, it was also shown that Tcnα may use alternative entry receptors other than LDLR.

Hemorrhagic toxin (TcsH) is an important exotoxin produced by Paeniclostridium sordellii, but the exact role of TcsH in the pathogenesis remains unclear, partly due to the lack of knowledge of host receptor(s). Here, we carried out two genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 screens parallelly with TcsH and identified cell surface fucosylation and TMPRSS2 as host factors contributing to the binding and entry of TcsH. Genetic deletion of either fucosylation biosynthesis enzymes or TMPRSS2 in the cells confers resistance to TcsH intoxication.
