A series of organoselenium compounds based on the hybridization of artesunate (ART) scaffolds and Se functionalities (-SeCN and -SeCF) were synthesized. The redox properties of artesunate-SeCN and artesunate-SeCF derivatives were conducted by 2, 2-didiphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and the results showed that compounds 2c, 2f and 3e have a good free radical scavenging activity. Their cytotoxicity was evaluated against four types of cancer cell lines, SW480 (human colon adenocarcinoma cells), HCT116 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells), HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma cells), MCF-7 (human breast cancer cells).

A series of 4-(N-dithiobenzyl piperazine)-1,8-naphthalimide derivatives 4-6 were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as novel multi-target antitumor agents. 3-(4,5-Dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) results showed that compounds 5j, 5k, and 6j exhibited superior in vitro antiproliferative activity in MGC-803, HepG-2, SKOV-3, and T24 cancer cell lines and the cisplatin-resistant cell line A549/DDP. HepG-2, SKOV-3, and T24 xenograft assay results revealed that compounds 5j, 5k, and 6j exhibited good antitumor effects compared with amonafide.

Ferroptosis is a predominant contributor to renal ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) after kidney transplant, evoking delayed graft function and poorer long-term outcomes. The wide propagation of ferroptosis among cell populations in a wave-like manner, developing the "wave of ferroptosis" causes a larger area of tubular necrosis and accordingly aggravates renal allograft IRI. In this study, we decipher a whole new metabolic mechanism underlying ferroptosis and propose a novel spreading pathway of the "wave of ferroptosis" in the renal tissue microenvironment, in which renal IRI cell-secreted small extracellular vesicles (IRI-sEVs) delivering lncRNA WAC-AS1 reprogram glucose metabolism in adjacent renal tubular epithelial cell populations by inducing GFPT1 expression and increasing hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP) flux, and consequently enhances O-GlcNAcylation.

However, some tumors such as prostate cancer constantly escape this immune response by down-regulating cell surface molecule recognition and/or secreting immune impressive cytokines. Here, we found pterostilbene, a natural agent with potent anticancer activity, could enhance expression of major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related proteins A and B (MICA/B) on prostate cancer cells surface, which are ligands of the natural killer group 2 member D (NKG2D) expressed by NK cells, and inhibit TGF-β1 secretion by prostate cancer cells.

A series of mono- and bisnaphthalimides derivatives containing 3-nitro and 4-morpholine moieties were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activities against four cancer cell lines.
