Purpose: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) seem to have a negative attitude towards physical activity, which is mainly favored by the lack of counseling provided by the medical and nursing staff. The aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes of both ESRD patients and medical staff on the participation and promotion of physical activity and identify the obstacles that discourage patients' involvement in intervention programs.
Study Design: Subjective assessment questionnaires and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire were administrated to hemodialysis patients and medical staff, to investigate the association between patient's barriers to physical activity, the total intensity level of physical activity, and attitudes of both ESRD patients and medical staff on the participation and promotion of physical activity.
Silicosis is an occupational fibrotic lung disease, which is associated with an increased incidence of autoimmune diseases. The effect of crystalline silica on the immune system is thought to be mediated by the antigen presenting cells. However, the direct effect of silica on T-cells and B-cells has not been evaluated adequately.

There are equivocal results regarding the association of phosphorus nutritional knowledge level and serum phosphorus values. The aim of this study was to assess phosphorus nutritional knowledge of hemodialysis patients, nephrologists and renal nurses and seek potential interventions to improve patients' adherence to phosphorus and overall nutritional guidelines.

Increased OS occurs even in early stages of the disease, progresses with deterioration of renal function and is further aggravated by hemodialysis (HD), due to the bioincompatibility of the method. Compared to HD, peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a more biocompatible dialysis modality, characterized by a significantly reduced, but still high, OS status.

Several clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that aggressive treatment of hypertension in patients with and without CKD lowers the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality, nevertheless the effects of blood pressure (BP) lowering in terms of renal protection or harm remain controversial. Both home and ambulatory BP estimation have shown that patients with CKD display abnormal BP patterns outside of the office and further investigation is required, so as to compare the association of ambulatory versus office BP measurements with hard outcomes and adjust treatment strategies accordingly.

Clarifying how hamster cells escape ferroptosis may reveal new molecular targets for preventing or ameliorating ischemia-reperfusion-induced human diseases or expanding the survival of organ transplants. Mouse or hamster RPTECs were subjected to anoxia and subsequent reoxygenation.

Methods: We reviewed the charts of 200 adults who donated a kidney at the University Hospital Hannover.
Objectives: Long-term effects of gastric bypass (GBP) surgery have been presented in observational and randomised studies, but there are only limited data for persons with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) regarding postoperative complications.
Design: This is a nationwide observational study based on two quality registers in Sweden (National Diabetes Register, NDR and Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Register, SOReg) and other national databases.
Setting: After merging the data, we matched individuals with T2DM who had undergone GBP with those not surgically treated for obesity on propensity score, based on sex, age, body mass index (BMI) and calendar time.
The disruption of balance between production of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant systems in favor of the oxidants is termed oxidative stress (OS). To counteract the damaging effects of prooxidant free radicals, all aerobic organisms have antioxidant defense mechanisms that are aimed at neutralizing the circulating oxidants and repair the resulting injuries. Antioxidants are either endogenous (the natural defense mechanisms produced by the human body) or exogenous, found in supplements and foods.

Diagnosis is posed from history, physical examination including anterior and posterior rhinoscopy, endoscopy of the nose and paranasal sinuses, radiological findings (CT and/or MRI), fungus cultures and histopathological examination. Non-specific presenting symptoms provide time for infection to extent from sinuses to vital surroundings such as bony, vascular and central nervous system structures, thereby increasing morbidity and mortality.

To become biologically active, MGP must undergo vitamin K-dependent carboxylation and phosphorylation. Vitamin K deficiency leads to the inactive uncarboxylated, dephosphorylated form of MGP (dpucMGP).

Studies on the effects of antihypertensive drugs on BPV in hemodialysis are scarce. This study examines the effects of nebivolol and irbesartan on short-term BPV in patients with intradialytic hypertension.

Hibernating mammals survive periods of torpor with a marked drop in tissue perfusion, interspersed with periods of arousal, and consequently I-R injury. In the present study, sensitivity to anoxia and/or reoxygenation and alterations in cellular ATP and homeostasis of the two most energy consuming processes, protein translation and Na-K-ATPase function, were evaluated in renal proximal tubular epithelial cells of mouse or native hibernator hamster origin.

The agreement between the measurements produced by the Mobil-O-Graph and SphygmoCor devices was explored using Bland-Altman analysis.

Hibernating mammals survive prolonged bouts of deep torpor with a dramatic drop in blood pressure, heart, and breathing rates, interspersed with short periods of arousal and, consequently, ischemia⁻reperfusion injury. Clarifying the differences under warm anoxia or reoxygenation between human cells and cells from a native hibernator may reveal interventions for rendering human cells resistant to ischemia⁻reperfusion injury.

Although the safety and efficacy of icodextrin is well-established, its use in everyday clinical practice has been associated with the appearance of skin rashes and other related skin reactions.
Case Presentation: Herein, we report the rare case of a 91-year-old woman with a history of severe congestive heart failure, who initiated continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis with icodextrin-based dialysate solutions and 15 days after the initial exposure to icodextrin developed a generalized maculopapular and exfoliative skin rash extending over the back, torso and extremities.
An association study was conducted to investigate the relation between 14 variants of glucose transporter 1 gene (SLC2A1) and the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) leading to nephropathy. We also performed a meta-analysis of 11 studies investigating association between diabetic nephropathy (DN) and SLC2A1 variants. The cohort included 197 cases (T2DM with nephropathy), 155 diseased controls (T2DM without nephropathy) and 246 healthy controls.

Approximately 7%-10% of patients with ESKD worldwide undergo peritoneal dialysis (PD) as kidney replacement therapy. The continuous nature of this dialytic modality and the absence of acute shifts in pressure and volume parameters is an important differentiation between PD and in-center hemodialysis. However, the burden of hypertension and prognostic association of BP with mortality follow comparable patterns in both modalities.

Cosmic radiation provokes cellular and gene damage, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to a dysregulation in the oxidants⁻antioxidants balance, and to the inflammatory response. Other practical factors contributing to these dysregulations in space environment include increased bone resorption, impaired anabolic response, and even difficulties in detecting oxidative stress in blood and urine samples.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOxidative stress (OS) is the result of prooxidant molecules overwhelming the antioxidant defense mechanisms. Hemodialysis (HD) constitutes a state of elevated inflammation and OS, due to loss of antioxidants during dialysis and activation of white blood cells triggering production of reactive oxygen species. Dialysis vintage, dialysis methods, and type and condition of vascular access, biocompatibility of dialyzer membrane and dialysate, iron administration, and anemia all can play a role in aggravating OS, which in turn has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
