Background: Risperidone (RIS), an atypical antipsychotic drug, is used for the treatment of psychoses associated with schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders in adult and pediatric populations. An oral dispersible tablet formulation of risperidone has been developed. This study was conducted to provide support for marketing authorization of this drug in China.

Relative bioavailability and pharmacokinetic comparison of two different enteric formulations of omeprazole.

In order to comply with the requirements for a drug listed in China, the study was developed to compare the pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability of two different enteric formulations of omeprazole (OPZ) in healthy Chinese subjects. A total of 32 volunteers participated in the study. Plasma concentrations were analyzed by nonstereospecific liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) method.

Case Description: We report and discuss a 20-year-old patient who experienced paroxysmal apnea (a symptom of Ondine's curse) during sleeping, causing him to wake up and control his breathing consciously. A magnetic resonance imaging study revealed that his medulla oblongata was twisted and displaced posteriorly by an abnormal tissue cord.

Expression analysis and functional characterization of a novel cold-responsive gene CbCOR15a from Capsella bursa-pastoris.

The cold-responsive (COR) genes involved in C-repeat binding factor signaling pathway function essentially in cold acclimation of higher plants. A novel COR gene CbCOR15a from shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) was predicted to be a homolog of COR15 in Arabidopsis. The analysis of tissue specific expression pattern as well as characterization of the CbCOR15a promoter revealed that the expression of CbCOR15a was induced by coldness not only in leaves and stem but also in roots.

Glutamate carboxypeptidase II gene polymorphisms and neural tube defects in a high-risk Chinese population.

Glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII) catalyzes the hydrolysis of N-acetylaspartylglutamate into N-acetylaspartate and glutamate in the brain. Animal experiments suggested that GCPII plays an essential role in early embryonic development. Previous studies provided conflicting results on the effect of the GCPII rs61886492 C>T (or 1561C>T) polymorphism on NTDs.

Re-evaluation of the histopathologic classification of ANCA-associated glomerulonephritis: a study of 121 patients in a single center.

Background: The recently published histopathologic classification of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated glomerulonephritis might greatly aid in the prognostication of patients at the time of diagnosis. This study aims to re-evaluate the new classification for its prognostic capacity in an independent Chinese series.

Methods: One hundred and twenty-one consecutive patients with ANCA-associated glomerulonephritis, diagnosed in our center from 1997 to 2010, were included in this retrospective study.

Altered methylation of the DNA repair gene MGMT is associated with neural tube defects.

DNA repair is critical for proper embryogenesis, and altered expression of DNA repair genes has been associated with neural tube defects (NTDs). The expression of DNA repair enzymes may be controlled, in part, by methylation of the promoter region. To assess whether disturbed promoter methylation pattern increases the incidence of NTDs, we employed methylation specific-multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MS-MLPA) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to quantify the methylation levels of multiple promoter CpG sites in normal human embryos and embryos with NTDs.

Absence of glomerular IgG4 deposition in patients with membranous nephropathy may indicate malignancy.

Background: The renal pathological manifestations of malignancy-associated membranous nephropathy (M-MN) and idiopathic membranous nephropathy (I-MN) are similar. It has been suggested that glomerular IgG4 deposition may play an important role in the pathogenesis of I-MN. In the present study, we compared the IgG subclass of immune complex deposition, clinical data and pathological data of patients with M-MN and I-MN.

Background And Objectives: The cross-reactive antigen(s) of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome from renal tubulointerstitia and ocular tissue remain unidentified. The authors' recent study demonstrated that the presence of serum IgG autoantibodies against modified C-reactive protein (mCRP) was closely associated with the intensity of tubulointerstitial lesions in lupus nephritis. The study presented here investigates the possible role of IgG autoantibodies against mCRP in patients with TINU syndrome.

The 2003 International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society (ISN/RPS) system for classifying patients with lupus nephritis was based on glomerular lesions exclusively, despite the fact that lupus nephritis affects all compartments of the kidney. Hence, we analyzed the tubulointerstitial lesions in patients with lupus nephritis within the different classes and subclasses of the 2003 ISN/RPS system. Among 313 patients from five centers in northern China with lupus nephritis, interstitial inflammatory cell infiltration, tubular atrophy, and interstitial fibrosis were severe in 170 patients with class IV, moderate in 55 with class III, and mild in 19 with class II and in 69 with class V disease, each with significance.

A branded formulation of subcutaneously administered enoxaparin has been available in China since 2000, and a generic formulation is being developed.
