A composite counter electrode (CE) made of electrospun carbon nanofibers (ECNs) and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles has been demonstrated for the first time to improve the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The new ECN-Pt composite CE exhibited a more efficient electro-catalytic performance with lower charge transfer resistance (R(ct)), larger surface area, and faster reaction rate than those of conventional Pt. It reduced the overall series resistance (R(se)), decreased dark saturation current density (J(0)) and increased shunt resistance (R(sh)) of the DSCs, thereby leading to a higher fill factor (FF) and larger open circuit voltage (V(oc)).

Sulfated modification of a polysaccharide obtained from Radix hedysari (RHP) was studied. Four sulfated derivatives (RHPS) with variable degrees of substitution (DS) were obtained by the chlorosulfonic acid method with ionic liquids (ILs) as solvent and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as catalyst. The structures of RHPS were characterized by FT-IR spectra and ¹³C NMR spectra, and the results indicated that the sulfated groups were modified mainly at the C-6 position and C-2 position.

Dopamine D₂ receptor (DRD2) is important for normal function of the brain reward circuit. Lower DRD2 function in the brain increases the risk for substance abuse, obesity, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and depression. Moreover, DRD2 is the target of most antipsychotics currently in use.

Chemical-induced bystander effects have been known for several years, but the underlying mechanism is still seldom investigated. Previous researchers have found that mitomycin C and phleomycin induced micronuclei in bystander cells the same as in exposed cells. We previously demonstrated the ability of actinomycin D (ACTD) to induce bystander effects in normal Chinese hamster fibroblast V79 cells and found that conditioned medium (CM) obtained from ACTD-exposed apoptotic cells induced apoptosis in bystander cells.

Recent discovery that nanoscale twin boundaries can be introduced in ultrafine-grained metals to improve strength and ductility has renewed interest in the mechanical behavior and deformation mechanisms of these nanostructured materials. By controlling twin boundary spacing, the effect of twin boundaries on void growth is investigated by using atomistic simulation method. The strength is significantly enhanced due to the discontinuous slip system associated with these coherent interfaces.

Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease characterized by poor prognosis and patient survival. Green tea polyphenols have been shown to exhibit multiple antitumor activities in various cancers, but studies on the pancreatic cancer are very limited. To identify the cellular targets of green tea action, we exposed a green tea extract (GTE) to human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma HPAF-II cells and performed two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of the cell lysates.

A mathematical model has been investigated to predict protein breakthrough during membrane adsorption/chromatography operations. The new model incorporates a non-uniform boundary condition at the column inlet to help describe the deviation from plug flow within real membrane adsorption devices. The model provides estimated breakthrough profiles of a binding protein while explicitly accounting for non-uniform flow at the inlet of the separation operation by modeling the flow distribution by a polynomial.

Exosomes participate in intercellular communication, but most data published are based on exosomes released from in vitro cultured cells that do not communicate with neighboring cells located in the same microenvironment as the exosomal-producing cells in vivo. In this study, our data show that co-culture of leukocytes isolated from breast tumor tissue leads to uptake of fibronectin (FN) on or in the tumor exosomes (Exo(fib+)). The induction of FN and exosomal uptake is tumor tissue derived and leukocyte specific, because leukocytes isolated from the peripheral blood of naïve mice failed to induce FN uptake by tumor exosomes.

Due to recent advances in the production of biotherapeutics, high capacity, high throughput adsorption media for efficient and economic separation of these medically important products are in great demand. One option that has been evaluated extensively is membrane/mat adsorption. While these media allow for rapid adsorption (due to the decreased internal diffusion) and high throughput processing (due to the open porous structure), they often suffer from low capacity and poor enrichment factors.

Each mammalian female cell transcriptionally inactivates one X chromosome to balance X-linked gene dosage between males and females. This phenomenon, called X chromosome inactivation, is a perfect epigenetic event, in which two chromosomes with identical DNA sequences are solely distinguished by epigenetic modifications. In this case, epigenetic marks, such as histone modifications, histone variants, DNA methylation, and ncRNAs, are all enriched on one chromosome, the inactive X chromosome (Xi), to establish its chromosome-wide gene silencing.

Acidic pharmaceutical residues are pollutants of emerging concern and are generally monitored by HPLC-MS/MS. However, due to the limited separation efficiency of HPLC column and lack of suitable mass transition for confirmation analysis, some interference may not be separated completely and differentiated from ibuprofen, which may cause the results with interference, especially in sample with complex matrix. The objective of this study is to develop a sensitive and reliable method for the determination of acidic pharmaceutical residues in water samples by GC-MS with better resolution by using methylation derivatization and isotope dilution techniques.
