Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features of vocal cord lesions in patients with representative autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Method: A total of 31 SLE/RA patients (14 SLE and 17 RA) complicated with vocal cord lesions (SLE/RA-VC group) who had been admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital were retrieved from the electronic registration system. Ninety-three age and sex-matched SLE/RA patients (42 SLE and 51 RA) without vocal cord lesions (SLE/RA-nVC group) admitted during the same period were chosen randomly as controls.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) can promote islet β-cell replication and function, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can inhibit T cell autoimmunity. This study aimed at testing the dynamic distribution of infused human MSCs and therapeutic effect of combined MSCs and Liraglutide, a long-acting GLP-1 analogue, on preserving β-cell function in severe non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. We found that infused MSCs accumulated in the pancreas at 4 weeks post infusion, which was not affected by Liraglutide treatment.

P7, an analogue of the cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) ppTG20, was derived by replacing Phe and Trp with Arg based on the structure-activity relationships of CPPs and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). P7 showed antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium at 4 μM and possessed broad antimicrobial activity greater than its parent peptide. P7 displayed good selectivity, with low haemolysis below its minimum inhibitory concentration range, but displayed cytotoxic activity against the HT29 and MDA-MB231 mammalian cell lines.

It has been hypothesized that an interaction among adenosine A(1) receptors, protein kinase C (PKC) activation, and ATP-sensitive potassium channels (K(ATP)) mediates ischemic preconditioning in experiments on different animal species. The purpose of this study was to determine if activation of K(ATP) is functionally coupled to A(1) receptors and (or) PKC activation during metabolic inhibition (MI) in guinea pig ventricular myocytes. Perforated-patch using nystatin and conventional whole-cell recording methods were used to observe the effects of adenosine and adenosine-receptor antagonists on the activation of K(ATP) currents during MI induced by application of 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) without glucose, in the presence or absence of a PKC activator, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA).

Methods: Sera of 328 patients with slow-onset diabetes and 120 sex and age-matched healthy controls underwent radiochemical test to detect the positive rates of SOX13-Ab, glutamic acid decarboxylace antibody (GAD-Ab) and carboxypeptidase H antibody (CPH-Ab). According to the GAD-Ab and CPH-Ab status the patients were divided into autoimmune (GAD-Ab and/or CPH-Ab positive, n = 130) and non-autoimmune (GAD-Ab and CPH-Ab negative, n = 198) diabetic subgroups.
