TOE1, also known as hCaf1z, belongs to the DEDD superfamily of deadenylases and a newly identified isoenzyme of hCaf1 deadenylases. Previous research has demonstrated that TOE1 has deadenylase activity, which can catalyze the degradation of poly(A) substrates and interact with hCcr4d to form the unconventional human Ccr4-Caf1 deadenylase complex. Our recent research indicates that hCaf1a and hCaf1b isoenzymes, highly expressed in gastric cancer, promote gastric cancer cell proliferation and tumorigenicity via modulating cell cycle progression.

The quantitative detection of microRNAs (miRNAs) is crucial for the diagnosis of cancers, while the traditional methods involve complicated procedures and restricted signal gain. In this study, we have established an ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor by combining a target-induced hybridization reaction and signal amplification strategy for the detection of miRNA-21. The signal amplification is achieved through employing double-stranded DNA as scaffolds for methylene blue (MB) and using a polypyrrole@gold nanocomposite (ppy@AuNPs) as the electrochemical catalyst for further enhancing the signal.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), owing to its low invasiveness, high efficiency, fewer side effects, spatiotemporal controllability and good selectivity, has attracted increasing attention for its tremendous potential in revolutionizing conventional strategies of tumor treatment. However, hypoxia is a common feature of most malignancies and has become the Achilles' heel of PDT. Currently, Type II photosensitizers (PSs) have inadequate efficacy for PDT due to the inherent oxygen consumption of the anoxic tumor microenvironment.

Halogenated aromatic pollutants (HAPs) including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) exhibit diverse toxicities and bio-accumulation in animals, thereby imposing risks on human via animal-derived food (ADF) consumption. Here we examined these HAPs in routine ADFs from South China and observed that PBDEs and PCBs showed statistically higher concentrations than PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs. PCDD/Fs and PCBs in these ADFs were mainly from the polluted feed and habitat of animals, except PCDD/Fs in egg, which additionally underwent selective biotransformation/progeny transfer after the maternal intake of PCDD/F-polluted stuff.
