Heart failure (HF) prevalence is rising due to population aging and increasing risk factor incidence, thereby posing a significant global public health challenge. Disease management programs (DMPs) play a crucial role in managing HF and optimizing postevent health outcomes. Through a systematic review and meta-analysis, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of DMPs following an HF event.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how air pollution exposure influences ovarian reserve and pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 5,354 women who underwent ART treatment, measuring their antral follicle counts (AFC) and correlating these with air pollution levels at their residences.
  • Findings indicated that exposure to certain pollutants (PM, SO, NO) was associated with decreased ovarian reserve and lower chances of live birth, suggesting environmental factors can negatively impact reproductive health.

Background: Osteosarcopenia is frequent, and the relative risk of fracture is higher among patients with sarcopenia. It is a strong predictor of poor outcomes in older adults undergoing cancer treatment, suggesting that osteosarcopenia is important in an aging society. This study aimed to evaluate the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of patients with cancer with and without osteosarcopenia.

Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is one of the most commonly occurring pathogens associated with genital tract infections in infertile males, but the impact of seminal UU infection in semen on intrauterine insemination (IUI) outcomes is poorly understood. We collected data from 245 infertile couples who underwent IUI at The First Affiliated Hospital of USTC (Hefei, China) between January 2021 and January 2023. The subjects were classified into two groups according to their UU infection status: the UU-positive group and the UU-negative group.

The structural integrity of the sperm flagellum is essential for proper sperm function. Flagellar defects can result in male infertility, yet the precise mechanisms underlying this relationship are not fully understood. CCDC181, a coiled-coil domain-containing protein, is known to localize on sperm flagella and at the basal regions of motile cilia.

Article Synopsis
  • Stroke survivors in post-acute care often face physiological challenges and lower quality of life, prompting this study to evaluate the PAC-IPCP program's effectiveness across hospital and home settings.
  • The study analyzed 210 stroke survivors in Taiwan using various assessment tools, and found that both care settings provided similar improvements in physical function and quality of life, with the Barthel Index (BI) being the most sensitive measurement tool.
  • The conclusion highlights that the PAC-IPCP program is effective in both settings, supporting the use of the BI for assessing physiological functions, and suggests future research should focus on other areas like swallowing and nutrition.

This study investigated the ability of a sarcopenia screening test to predict mortality among cancer inpatients. We conducted a prospective study of patients admitted to the oncology ward of a teaching hospital in southern Taiwan. Over a 5-month period, 82 patients were enrolled for evaluation and were followed for 3 years.

Background And Aim: Despite prior attempts to evaluate the effects of sarcopenia on survival among patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), the results of these studies have not been consistent. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between sarcopenia and survival among patients having CRC without distant metastasis by aggregating multiple studies.

Methods: We performed a literature search using computerized databases and identified additional studies from among the bibliographies of retrieved articles.

Objective: The delivery of bad news is an unpleasant but necessary medical procedure. However, few studies have addressed the experiences and preferences of the families of school-aged children with cancer when they are informed of the children's condition. This study aimed to explore families of school-age children with cancer for their preferences and experiences of truth-telling.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatolenticular degeneration (HLD) is a genetic disease that affects how the body handles copper, causing problems in different organs, especially in female reproductive health.
  • In a study, researchers tested a substance called berberine on mice with HLD to see if it could help protect their ovaries from damage.
  • The results showed that berberine improved the health of the ovaries by reducing harmful processes and stress caused by excess copper, leading to better ovulation and healthier ovary structure.

Introduction: Chronic physical disease (CPD) makes life filled with many negative events in adolescents, but not all adolescents experiencing negative life events proceed to develop emotional distress, only those with low emotional distress tolerance (EDT). A valid and reliable scale to measure EDT in CPD adolescents is important for caring for their emotional distress. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to translate the 15-item English version Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS) into a Chinese version and then validate the scale for measuring EDT of adolescents with CPD.

Study Question: The objective was to construct a model for predicting the probability of recurrent implantation failure (RIF) after assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment based on the clinical characteristics and routine laboratory test data of infertile patients. A model was developed to predict RIF. The model showed high calibration in external validation, helped to identify risk factors for RIF, and improved the efficacy of ART therapy.

Topical antibiotic agents are not generally indicated for preventing of surgical site infections (SSIs) in clean incisions, and the drug concentrations that should be delivered to local incision sites remain uncertain. The aim of this study was to critically assess the efficacy of topical antibiotic agents in comparison with non-antibiotic agents for preventing SSIs in clean incisions by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. We conducted a search of literature in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Databases and included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on topical antibiotic use for patients with clean post-surgical incisions.

Background: Studies have been conducted to evaluate whether sarcopenia is a predictor for survival in patients with colon cancer postsurgery, but findings have been inconsistent, and effects of age were seldom evaluated.

Methods: We recruited 133 patients with resectable colon cancer who underwent surgery between January 2014 and December 2017 at a teaching hospital to evaluate the effects of sarcopenia on survival, after adjusting for age and other potential predictors, including visceral adiposity (VA).

Results: Preoperative sarcopenia was associated with worse overall survival (OS: 62.

Research Question: What are the clinical outcomes and safety implications of early cumulus cell removal after short-term insemination combined with early rescue intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in preventing fertilization failure?

Design: In this retrospective study, a total of 14,360 cycles were divided into four groups based on insemination method and fertilization ability: conventional IVF group (n = 5519); early cumulus cell removal group (n = 4107); conventional ICSI group (n = 4215); and early rescue ICSI group (where failed or low fertilization was predicted, n = 519). Fertilization outcomes, pregnancy outcomes, neonatal outcomes and birth defects were analysed by comparing the early cumulus cell removal group with the conventional IVF group, and the early rescue ICSI group with the conventional ICSI group.

Results: There were no significant differences in the outcomes of fertilization, pregnancy, neonates or birth defects between the conventional IVF group and the early cumulus cell removal group (P > 0.

  • COVID-19 significantly impacts cancer treatment outcomes, particularly for adult patients with hematologic malignancies, as shown in this systematic review and meta-analysis.
  • The analysis, which included 12 studies, found an overall mortality rate of 36.3%, with those receiving anticancer therapy facing a 14% higher risk of death compared to those not receiving such treatment.
  • Female patients exhibited a higher mortality risk associated with anticancer therapy than males, highlighting the need for caution when treating these patients amidst the ongoing pandemic.

Background: Autophagic flux is coordinated by a network of master regulatory genes, which centered on transcription factor EB (TFEB). The disorders of autophagic flux are closely associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and thus restoring autophagic flux to degrade pathogenic proteins has become a hot therapeutic strategy. Hederagenin (HD), a triterpene compound, isolated from a variety food such as Matoa (Pometia pinnata) Fruit, Medicago sativa, Medicago polymorpha L.
