The mitochondrial protein sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) can counteract cell damage caused by oxidative stress and inflammation, and contribute to cell survival primarily by improving mitochondrial function. However, the effects of SIRT3 in dopaminergic neuronal cells (DACs) remain unclear. In our previous studies, microglia activation-associated cytotoxicity was observed to promote the apoptosis of DACs, along with the decrease of SIRT3 expression.

The novel polychloromethylation/acyloxylation of 1,6-enynes with chloroalkanes and diacyl peroxides through dual-role designs has been developed to prepare 2-pyrrolidinone derivatives with polychloromethyl units with the use of an inexpensive copper salt under mild conditions. This strategy includes two dual-role designs, not only improving atomic utilization but also allowing a cleaner process. The wide substrate scope and simple reaction conditions demonstrate the practicability of this protocol.

A novel cyclization/hydrolysis of 1,5-enenitriles for the synthesis of valuable pyrrolidine-2,4-diones in the aqueous phase using I as the catalyst and -butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant is reported. In the presence of the I/TBHP system, sulfonyl hydrazides produce sulfonyl radicals, which undergo radical addition, intramolecular cyclization, hydrogen abstraction, and hydrolysis to give the final products. The use of the inexpensive and environmentally friendly I/TBHP catalytic oxidation system in the aqueous phase makes it a benign and sustainable strategy.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) promotes brain inflammation; conversely, brain injury promotes spinal neuron loss. There is a need to identify molecular biomarkers and therapeutic targets for central nervous system (CNS) injury. CDGSH iron-sulfur structural domain 2 (CISD2), an NF-κB antagonist, is downregulated after injury in vivo and in vitro.

2-Pyrrolidones have aroused enormous interest as a useful structural moiety in drug discovery; however, not only does their syntheses suffer from low selectivity and yield, but also it requires high catalyst loadings. The radical cyclization of 1,n-enynes and 1,n-dienes has demonstrated to be an attractive method for the synthesis of 2-pyrrolidones due to its mild reaction conditions, fewer steps, higher atom economy, excellent functional group compatibility, and high regioselectivity. Furthermore, radical receptors with unsaturated bonds (i.

Acylglycerol kinase (AGK) had been shown to contribute to cancer progression and unfavorable clinical outcomes of patients. Our study aimed to investigate the expression pattern and clinical significance of AGK in patients with early-stage cervical squamous cell cancer (CSCC). The protein and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of AGK was analyzed in six cervical cancer cell lines and four paired early-stage CSCC specimens and normal cervical tissues (NCT), using Western blotting and real-time PCR (RT-PCR).

Aim: Poststroke depression (PSD) is one of the most common neuropsychiatric complications after stroke. TREK-1, a two-pore-domain potassium channel, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of stroke and depression. The aim of this study was to investigate whether TREK-1 plays a role in the therapeutic effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram in a rat PSD model.

Objective: To compare the expression levels of pluripotent genes among incomplete reprogrammed colonies and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), to explore the relationship between the expression of pluripotent genes and incomplete reprogramming.

Methods: Four genes (Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, C-Myc) were introduced into human foreskin fibroblasts (HFFs) by retroviruses. The HFFs were induced to reprogramming.

Objective: To study correlation between the Xba I polymorphism of apoB gene and plasma lipid profiles in Li ethnic group.

Methods: Total 151 cases of healthy Li people were recruited randomly by cluster sampling and 200 Han people were recruited as control; blood was drawn to analyze Xba I polymorphism distribution of apoB gene and serum lipid levels.

Results: There were lower serum total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in serum of Li people; while, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), X-/X+ genotype and X+ allele frequencies exhibited higher levels than Han people.

Raman spectra of two typical carotenoids (beta-carotene and lutein) and some short (n = 2-5) polyenes were calculated using density functional theory. The wavenumber-linear scaling (WLS) and other frequency scaling methods were used to calibrate the calculated frequencies. It was found that the most commonly used uniform scaling (UFS) method can only calibrate several individual frequencies perfectly, and the systematic result of this method is not very good.

We investigated and compared nanosize Ag spheres, plates, and wires in a fish gill epithelial cell line (RT-W1) and in zebrafish embryos to understand the mechanism of toxicity of an engineered nanomaterial raising considerable environmental concern. While most of the Ag nanoparticles induced N-acetyl cysteine sensitive oxidative stress effects in RT-W1, Ag nanoplates were considerably more toxic than other particle shapes. Interestingly, while Ag ion shedding and bioavailability failed to comprehensively explain the high toxicity of the nanoplates, cellular injury required direct particle contact, resulting in cell membrane lysis in RT-W1 as well as red blood cells (RBC).

UV-light-induced electron-hole (e(-)/h(+)) pair generation with free radical production in TiO(2)-based nanoparticles is a major conceptual paradigm for biological injury. However, to date, this hypothesis has been difficult to experimentally verify due to the high energy of UV light that is intrinsically highly toxic to biological systems. Here, a versatile flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) synthetic process has been exploited to synthesize a library of iron-doped (0-10 wt%) TiO(2) nanoparticles.

The mitochondrial damage induced by cadmium has been well established, but its mechanism and its relationship with cadmium-induced apoptosis are elusive until now. Our research showed that cadmium could directly lead to the dysfunction of isolated mitochondria from mouse liver, including the inhibition of respiration, the opening of permeability transition pore (PTP), the loss of transmembrane potential, and the release of cytochrome c. These mitochondrial changes were completely suppressed by Bcl-xL and Ruthenium Red (RR).
