Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between insulin resistance (IR) indicators and long-term mortality in patients with coronary heart disease and hypertension, as previous research has been limited in this area.
  • Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the researchers employed various statistical techniques to analyze the impacts of IR surrogates, specifically HOMA-IR, on all-cause mortality rates.
  • Results showed that HOMA-IR has a significant threshold (3.59) affecting mortality risk, demonstrating that lower levels are associated with decreased risk while higher levels indicate an increased risk.

Drying is an indispensable processing step for Chinese medicinal materials after harvesting. It often leads to significant changes in the active components of these materials, thus impacting their medicinal values. Understanding the mechanisms behind the changes during the drying process is of great importance for regulating the transformation of key active components.

To study the effects of different drying methods on the quality of male flowers of Eucommia ulmoides(MFOEU), we treated fresh MFOEU samples with drying in the shade(DS), vacuum freeze drying(VFD), high-or low-temperature hot air drying(HTHAD, LTHAD), microwave drying(MD), and vacuum drying(VD), respectively. The color, total flavonoid content, total polysaccharide content, and main active components such as geniposide, geniposidic acid, rutin, chlorogenic acid, galuteolin, pinoresinol diglucoside, and aucubin in MFOEU were taken as the evaluation indicators. The quality of MFOEU was comprehensively evaluated by entropy weight method combined with color index method, partial least squares discriminant analysis and content clustering heat map.

When plates with edge cracks in the rolling process is straightened by cyclic tensile and compressive stress, the tip of edge crack always accompanied by stress concentration, which leads to crack propagation. In this paper, damage parameters are imported into the plate straightening model based on determining the GTN damage parameters of magnesium alloy materials by inverse finite element calibration method, the influence of different straightening process schemes and prefabricated V-shaped crack geometry on crack growth is analyzed through the way of the combination of simulation and straightening experiment. The results show that the peak values of equivalent stress and equivalent strain under each straightening roll appear at the crack tip.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age. This syndrome not only impairs female fertility but also increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, psychological diseases, and other health problems. Additionality, because of the high clinical heterogeneity, the current pathogenesis of PCOS is still unclear.

Background: X-ray cholangiography is of great value in the imaging of biliary tract diseases; however, occupational radiation exposure is unavoidable. Moreover, clinicians must manually inject the contrast dye, which may result in a relatively high incidence of adverse reactions due to unstable injection pressure. Thus, there is a need to develop a novel remote-controlled cholangiography injection device.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most debilitating and invasive tumors. Although previous reports have demonstrated the critical role microRNA‑181a (miR‑181a) serves in the progression of ESCC, how miR‑181a induces epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) remains to be elucidated. In the present study, the expression profiles of TGF‑β1 and Smad4 proteins in 88 patients with ESCC and 21 adjacent non‑cancerous tissues were analyzed using immunohistochemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the presence of harmful bacteria in donor semen and how it affects semen quality.
  • Researchers collected and categorized semen samples from 4,897 donors over a decade, identifying different levels of bacterial contamination and utilizing a biochemical method to identify specific bacterial species.
  • Results showed high rates of bacterial presence, particularly Gram-negative bacteria, with lower sperm counts and motility in samples with higher bacterial levels, indicating that bacterial infection can negatively impact semen quality.

The modification of the mouse genome by site-specific gene insertion of transgenes and other genetic elements allows the study of gene function in different developmental stages and in the pathogenesis of diseases. Here, we generated a "genomic safe harbor" () locus-specific knock-in transgenic mouse line in which the promoter is used to drive the expression of the reverse tetracycline transactivator (rtTA) in the liver. The newly generated transgenic mice were bred with ) mice to assess inducibility and tissue-specificity.

Increasing evidence has shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have important biological functions and can be used as a prognostic biomarker in human cancers. However, investigation of the prognostic value of lncRNAs in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is in infancy. In the present study, we analyzed the lncRNA expression data in a large number of HNSCC patients (=425) derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to identify an lncRNA expression signature for improving the prognosis of HNSCC.

Objective: To investigate the expressions of solute carrier family 22 member 14 (SLC22A14) and sperm-associated antigen 6 (SPAG6) in the sperm of idiopathic asthenospermia men.

Methods: We collected semen samples from 50 idiopathic asthenozoospermia patients and another 50 normal sperm donors, purified the sperm by discontinuous density centrifugation on Percoll gradients, and then determined the mRNA and protein expressions of SLC22A14 and SPAG6 by RT-PCR and Western blot, respectively.

Results: Compared with the normal controls, the idiopathic asthenozoospermia patients showed significantly decreased mRNA expressions of SLC22A14 (0.

Regularity of greenhouse gas emissions from black soil with different reclamation years in northern China was investigated by an incubation experiment. Soil samples cultivated for 2 years, 30 years, 100 years and uncultivated were collected and incubated at 2 degrees C and a soil moisture of 60% of the water hold capacity (WHC) for 7 days. The results indicated that the physical and chemical properties of black soil changed significantly after reclamation, which had significant influence on the greenhouse gas emissions.

Five new cyclic peptides (including four heptapeptides and one octapeptide), reniochalistatins A-E (1-5), were isolated and characterized from the marine sponge Reniochalina stalagmitis collected off Yongxing Island in the South China Sea. Their structures were assigned on the basis of HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data, and MALDI-TOF/TOF data for sequence analysis. The absolute configurations of all of the amino acid residues were determined using chiral-phase HPLC and Marfey's analysis.
