Article Synopsis
  • The modified Fresno test was adapted from English to Chinese to evaluate evidence-based practice knowledge and skills among physical therapists and students, as there was no existing Chinese version.
  • Phase 1 involved translating and validating the test, which showed excellent content validity.
  • In Phase 2, the test demonstrated good known-group validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability, confirming its effectiveness for assessing evidence-based practice in Chinese-speaking individuals.

The erythrocyte membrane is highly specialized with ∼one million anion exchanger-1 (AE1) per cell for rapid membrane permeation of HCO3-(aq), as most blood CO2(g) is carried in this hydrated anionic form. People with the GP.Mur blood type have more AE1 on their erythrocyte membrane, and they excrete CO2(g) more efficiently.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the top contributors to global disease mortality. AMI biomarkers, such as cardiac troponin I (cTnI), are often detected with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that suffers from several well-known drawbacks such as poor stability and slow and cumbersome operation. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new analytical technique that can rapidly analyse and detect cTnI for early screening of AMI.

Background: The 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak was declared a global pandemic in March 2020. It quickly spread across all continents, causing significant social, environmental, health, and economic impacts. During the pandemic, there has been consideration of repurposing and repositioning of medications, such as corticosteroids, for the treatment of hospitalised COVID-19 patients.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the effectiveness of medical chitosan injections for treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and examined lipid metabolism in synovial tissue.
  • Sixty KOA patients were divided into two groups: one receiving chitosan injections (CSI group) and one without (OA group), with various functional scoring assessments conducted to gauge outcomes.
  • Results indicated that the CSI group had a longer time before needing knee surgery compared to the OA group, and there were notable differences in lipid profiles, especially lower levels of triacylglycerides in the CSI group.

Article Synopsis
  • Nitrite interacts with hemoglobin to produce nitric oxide (NO) during hypoxia, which helps regulate blood flow, but the exact mechanism for nitrite's entry into red blood cells (RBCs) remains unclear.
  • The study hypothesized that the Cl/HCO anion exchanger-1 (AE1) in RBC membranes could transport nitrite, as it physically resembles bicarbonate and chloride ions.
  • Experiments showed that reducing chloride or bicarbonate levels slowed NO production from nitrite in RBCs, confirming the role of AE1 in facilitating this transport and supporting NO metabolism in circulation.

Band 3 protein is a Cl/[Formula: see text] transporter on the red blood cell (RBC) surface with an important role in CO excretion. Greater band 3 expression by roughly 20% is found in people with the GP.Mur blood type.

Until now, no study has directly network meta-analysed the impact of nasal masks, nasal pillows and oronasal masks on continuous positive airway pressure therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. This study aimed to meta-analyse the impact of three kinds of nasal interfaces with both network meta-analysis and pairwise comparison. PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL and ClinicalTrials.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the GP.Mur red blood cell type and blood pressure, specifically how it may influence blood pressure levels in adults.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 989 non-elderly adults, focusing on factors like BMI, age, and hemoglobin levels to determine their impact on blood pressure.
  • Results showed GP.Mur slightly increased systolic blood pressure, particularly in non-anemic Taiwanese men, but the contribution of GP.Mur to blood pressure was both hemoglobin-dependent and independent, with further research needed to fully understand its mechanisms.

Background/purpose: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) has been gradually introduced in the diagnosis of mediastinal tuberculous (TB) lymphadenitis. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the utility of polymerase chain reaction for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB-PCR) using EBUS-TBNA rinse fluid and to explore the factors that influence the accuracy of EBUS-TBNA.

Methods: A retrospective study with prospective data collection was carried out with patients with unselected mediastinal lymphadenopathy who underwent EBUS-TBNA and a TB-PCR study from April 2010 to July 2017.

Dysregulation of the enzymes involved in the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is known to promote tumorigenesis. Our recent study demonstrated that ribose-5-phosphate isomerase (RPIA), a key regulator of the PPP, regulates hepatoma cell proliferation and colony formation. Our studies in zebrafish reveal that RPIA-mediated hepatocarcinogenesis requires extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and β-catenin signaling.

The effect of overexpressing the Indian hedgehog (IHH) gene on the chondrogenic differentiation of rabbit bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) was investigated in a simulated microgravity environment. An adenovirus plasmid encoding the rabbit IHH gene was constructed in vitro and transfected into rabbit BMSCs. Two large groups were used: conventional cell culture and induction model group and simulated microgravity environment group.

Objective: Previous studies have indicated that EGFR exon 19 deletions in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are associated with better outcomes to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) than the L858R mutation. This study aimed to evaluate whether T790M, a resistant mutation, is more likely to coexist with L858R mutation than with exon 19 deletions in pretreatment NSCLC patients.

Materials And Method: We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE up to Nov 30th, 2015 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies that reported pretreatment T790M and EGFR-activating mutation.

Background: Deficits in face emotion perception are among the most pervasive aspects of schizophrenia impairments which strongly affects interpersonal communication and social skills.

Material And Methods: Schizophrenic patients (PSZ) and healthy control subjects (HCS) performed 2 psychophysical tasks. One, the SAFFIMAP test, was designed to determine the impact of subliminally presented affective or neutral images on the accuracy of face-expression (angry or neutral) perception.

Article Synopsis
  • Intragastric infections of Klebsiella pneumoniae in mice lead to serious liver issues, including abscesses and necrosis, alongside widespread bacterial infection (bacteremia).
  • Lithium chloride (LiCl), known for its anti-inflammatory effects and commonly used for bipolar disorder, significantly protects infected mice from death and liver damage when administered after infection.
  • LiCl appears to enhance the immune response by making K. pneumoniae more vulnerable to macrophage attacks without directly inhibiting bacterial growth, suggesting it could be a potential treatment for liver infections caused by this pathogen.

A novel adaptive filter is proposed using a recurrent cerebellar-model-articulation-controller (CMAC). The proposed locally recurrent globally feedforward recurrent CMAC (RCMAC) has favorable properties of small size, good generalization, rapid learning, and dynamic response, thus it is more suitable for high-speed signal processing. To provide fast training, an efficient parameter learning algorithm based on the normalized gradient descent method is presented, in which the learning rates are on-line adapted.

A hybrid control system, integrating principal and compensation controllers, is developed for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) uncertain nonlinear systems. This hybrid control system is based on sliding-mode technique and uses a recurrent cerebellar model articulation controller (RCMAC) as an uncertainty observer. The principal controller containing an RCMAC uncertainty observer is the main controller, and the compensation controller is a compensator for the approximation error of the system uncertainty.
