Objectives: To study the clinical features and prognosis of children and their family members with family clusters of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant infection under the admission mode of parent-child ward.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 190 children and 190 family members with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection who were admitted to Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, the designated hospital for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), April 8 to May 10, 2022.

Results: Both the child and adult groups were mainly mild COVID-19, and the proportion of mild cases in the child group was higher than that in the adult group (<0.

Article Synopsis
  • A new wavelength-sensitive sensor was developed using two parallel PtSe/thin Si Schottky junction photodetectors, which can detect wavelengths from UV to near-infrared light (265 to 1050 nm).
  • This sensor has a unique operation mechanism that can be modeled using Synopsys TCAD, showing a reliable relationship between photocurrent ratio and wavelength.
  • The sensor exhibits high precision with an average absolute error of ±4.05 nm and relative error of less than ±0.56%, and its performance is analyzed in relation to temperature, light intensity, and the thickness of the PtSe layer.

Ultraviolet photodetectors (UVPDs) based on wide band gap semiconductors (WBSs) are important for various civil and military applications. However, the relatively harsh preparation conditions and the high cost are unfavorable for commercialization. In this work, we proposed a non-WBS UVPD by using a silicon nanowire (SiNW) array with a diameter of 45 nm as building blocks.

Article Synopsis
  • Drought and high salinity negatively impact crop growth and yield, but using transgenic methods can help crops tolerate these stressors.
  • The study focused on the GmSYP24 protein, identified as a gene responsive to dehydration, which aids in improving stress tolerance in plants like soybean and Arabidopsis.
  • Overexpressing GmSYP24 in transgenic plants led to better water retention and stress resistance, while reducing sensitivity to plant hormones during germination, highlighting its role in improving resilience to abiotic stress.

The specific eradication of pathogenic T cells for the treatment of allograft rejections and autoimmune disorders without impairment of overall immune function is a fundamental goal. Here, cell-sized poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microparticles (PLGA MPs) were prepared as a scaffold to co-display the peptide/major histocompatibility complex (pMHC, target antigen) and anti-Fas monoclonal antibody (apoptosis-inducing molecule) for the generation of biodegradable killer MPs. Ovalbumin (OVA) antigen-targeted killer MPs significantly depleted OVA-specific CD8+ T cells in an antigen-specific manner, both in vitro and in OT-1 mice.

The macronutrient potassium (K) is essential to plant growth and development. Crop yield potential is often affected by lack of soluble K. The molecular regulation mechanism of physiological and biochemical responses to K starvation in soybean roots and shoots is not fully understood.

Silver/carbon (Ag/C) core-shell nanospheres synthesized by a hydrothermal method were used as templates for fabricating silver nanoparticle-decorated Ag/C (Ag/C/AgNps) nanospheres. The particle size of Ag nanoparticles can be tuned by varying the concentration of Ag precursor. Detection of melamine molecules at concentrations as low as 5.

Metallo-dielectric photonic crystals (MDPCs) are used as ultrasensitive molecular detectors for concentrations down to picomolar level based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Calculations show that the amorphous silicon photonic crystals (a-Si PCs) embedded in multiple metallo-dielectric (MD) units can significantly increase the electromagnetic fields at the air-dielectric interface, leading to remarkable Raman enhancement. Corresponding experiments show the multiple MDPC structures can serve as an ultrasensitive SERS substrate with excellent reproducibility and stability, capable of quantitative analysis down to 10 pM level.
