Article Synopsis
  • - During the Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition, researchers found a new species of white lichenized fungi, named Xin Y. Wang & Li S. Wang, widely spread across the Tibetan Plateau, particularly in alpine meadows.
  • - This new species is identified by its unique features, including a distinct thallus shape, white coverage, and spore structure, marking the first identification of a certain fungal group in China.
  • - The study revealed that what was previously thought to be one group of fungi is actually two distinct clades based on genetic analysis, leading to a discussion on their morphological and ecological differences along with detailed descriptions of three species.

This study aims to observe the improvement of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) after using water extracts of Polygoni Multiflori Radix and Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata and explore their preliminary mechanism. Mice were fed with methionine-choline-deficent diet(MCD) for 6 weeks for modeling, and mice were orally given with 50, 100, 200 mg·kg~(-1) of Polygoni Multiflori Radix water extract(PMRWE) or Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata water extract(PMRPWE) at the last 4 weeks. During the whole experimental procedure, the body weight changes of the mice were monitored and recorded.

β-Glucosidase and β-xylosidase were investigated for their ability to improve the aroma of instant green tea. The aroma and corresponding contributors were analyzed by sensory evaluation, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and odor activity value. Their specific contributions to aroma attributes were further examined by aroma reconstruction and omission experiments.

Background: Optimal communication and collaboration between inter-disciplinary health care providers is critical to ensuring high quality patient care. We aimed to quantify the impact on physician-nurse collaboration (PNC) of implementing daily goal sheets (DGSs) in emergency settings.

Methods: The usage of a DGS was administered in morning rounds in an emergency intensive care unit (ICU) for four consecutive months.

Isoquercitrin is a flavonoid with important applications in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. However, a low yield and high production cost hinders the industrial preparation of isoquercitrin. In the present study, isoquercitrin was prepared by biotransformation of rutin using α-L-rhamnosidase from JMU-TS528 combined with high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) purification.

Characterizations on polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) during frequent haze periods have been conducted in an urban site of Beijing, China. Particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) and other carbonaceous matters were quantified. The average PM during haze events (256.

To explore the role of exogenous spermidine (Spd) in enhancing the resistance of maize to drought stress, 15% polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) was used to simulate drought stress and with 'Xianyu 335' (drought-insensitive) and 'Fenghe 1' (drought sensitive) as the experiment materials, the effects of Spd (0.1 mmol·L) on the growth, photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll content, osmotic adjustment substance, membrane lipid peroxidation and root activity of maize seedlings were investigated. The results showed that the application of Spd significantly promoted the growth of maize seedlings under drought stress, increased chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate (P), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration rate (T) and water use efficiency (WUE), and decreased the enhancement of intercellular carbon dioxide concentration (C) in 'Fenghe 1'.

The glycoside hydrolase, α-l-rhamnosidase, could remove the bitter taste of naringin from citrus juices. However, most α-l-rhamnosidases are easily deactivated at high temperatures, limiting the practice in debittering citrus juices. The V529A mutant of the α-l-rhamnosidase r-Rha1 from Aspergillus niger JMU-TS528 was developed with improved thermostability using directed evolution technology and site-directed mutagenesis.

d-Limonene is a fragrant chemical that widely exists in aromatic products. Isotopic labelling of water molecules plus GC-MS and GC-PCI-Q-TOF analyses were used to investigate the influence of water molecules on chemical transformation of d-limonene induced by UV irradiation and air exposure. The results showed that the synergistic effect of UV irradiation, air exposure and water presence could facilitate d-limonene transformation into the limonene oxides: p-mentha-2,8-dienols, hydroperoxides, carveols, l-carvone and carvone oxide.

Limonin is a bioactive compound that is traditionally extracted from citrus seeds using organic solvents or alkaline/metal ion solutions. In the present study, pummelo [Citrus grandis] peel was investigated for limonin preparation using a novel process consisting of water extraction, ammonium sulfate precipitation and resin adsorption. The pummelo peel was determined to have 4.

Schistosomiasis is a notable neglected tropical disease caused by trematodes that inflame mainly the intestines, bladder, and liver. Because of the unavailability of a schistosomiasis vaccine, control of the disease depends mainly on chemotherapy. Praziquantel (PZQ), which is active against all schistosome species and the recommended drug by the World Health Organization for schistosomiasis treatment at either the community or individual level, has become the exclusive drug because of its low cost and efficacy against the adult form of all schistosome species.

A G-quadruplex-based, label-free fluorescence assay was demonstrated for the detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). A double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), hybridized by ATP-aptamer and its complementary sequence, was employed as a substrate for ATP binding. SYBR Green I (SG I) was a fluorescent probe and exonuclease III (Exo III) was a nuclease to digest the dsDNA.

Leukocyte interleukin-3 receptor α (CD123) is regarded as a marker of leukemia stem cells. We previously found that CD123 was also highly expressed on CD34(+)CD38(-) cells in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients, but it is unclear whether the level and the characteristics of CD34(+)CD38(-)CD123(+) cells in MDS are similar to those in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Based on previous research by our team, we further enlarged the specimens and found that the mean proportion and the mean MFI of CD34(+)CD38(-)CD123(+) cells in low-grade MDS were lower than that in AML, and those in high-grade MDS were similar to those in AML.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on expanding and harvesting hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from umbilical cord blood using bioreactors, specifically spinner flasks and a rotating wall vessel (RWV).
  • The growth medium used was serum-free and enriched with various growth factors, and accessory cells were provided through encapsulated stromal cells in alginate-chitosan beads.
  • Results showed that the RWV bioreactor led to significantly higher fold-expansion of HSCs and MSCs compared to spinner flasks, with successful separation of the two cell types post-culture, indicating a feasible method for stem cell expansion and harvesting.

The water soluble matrix (WSM) of pearl powder [Hyriopsis cumingii Lea (Unionidae)] was extracted, and the insoluble residue was demineralized, size-fractionated, and named as MR14 (> 14 kDa), MR3-14 (3-14 kDa), and MR3 (< 3 kDa). The effects of WSM, MR14, MR3-14, and MR3 on primary mouse oral fibroblast proliferation, collagen accumulation, matrix metalloproteinase-2, -9 (MMP-2, -9) activities, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) production were tested by MTT assay, chloramine T method, gelatin zymography, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. The results showed that the WSM and MR14 could significantly (p < 0.
