In this letter, we comment on a recent publication by Mei , in the , investigating the hepatoprotective effects of the modified Xiaoyao San (MXS) formula in a male rat model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The authors found that MXS treatment mitigated hepatic steatosis and inflammation in the NASH model, as evidenced by the reduction in lipid droplets (LDs), fibrosis markers and lipogenic factors. Interestingly, these hepatoprotective effects were associated with androgen upregulation (based on metabolomics analysis of male steroid hormone metabolites), adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation, and restoration of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) expression.

Several bacterial species cause post-operative infections, which has been a critical health concern among hospital patients. During a study on the quality of the indoor environment, Acanthamoeba spp. were detected in 20 out of 87 dust samples collected from air-conditioners installed in a four-story campus building located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Objective: To evaluate the prenatal diagnostic accuracy of fetal echocardiography for congenital heart defects.

Methods: Fetal echocardiographic databases from 2001 to 2007 were searched for patients with a prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defect, medical records were obtained and the prenatal echocardiographic findings were correlated with postnatal echocardiography results or autopsy findings, if the pregnancy was terminated or the fetus died in utero.

Results: Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart defects was made in 113 pregnancies at a mean gestational age of 26.

The present study aims to explore the possible mechanisms underlying the multidrug resistance characteristic of Cryptosporidium parvum by detecting the presence of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) protein encoding genes, especially one that shows high similarity to members belonging to the multidrug resistance protein (MDR) and multidrug resistance associated protein (MRP) subfamilies. PCR using ABC-specific degenerate primers successfully amplified two unique fragments, designated Cpnbd1 and Cpnbd2, from C. parvum genomic DNA.
