Article Synopsis
  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics are a major environmental and health concern due to their long-lasting nature, prompting research into their degradation.
  • Scientists engineered a bacterium, Stenotrophomonas pavanii JWG-G1, to overproduce a PET-degrading enzyme called DuraPETase, achieving significant degradation of PET microplastics at room temperature.
  • This research highlights the potential of using engineered bacteria for degrading microplastics in various environments and offers a new approach for environmental cleanup technologies.

Schistosomiasis, a parasite infectious disease caused by , often leads to egg granuloma and fibrosis due to the inflammatory reaction triggered by egg antigens released in the host liver. This study focuses on the role of the egg antigens CP1412 protein of (SjCP1412) with RNase activity in promoting liver fibrosis. In this study, the recombinant egg ribonuclease SjCP1412, which had RNase activity, was successfully prepared.

The initiation, development and resolution of hepatic fibrosis are influenced by various cytokines, chemokines, damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and signaling pathways. A significant number of studies in recent years have indicated that the progression of hepatic fibrosis is closely linked to programmed cell death processes such as apoptosis, autophagy, pyroptosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, cuproptosis, and PANoptosis. Inducement of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) death or preventing death in other liver cells can delay or even reverse hepatic fibrosis.

With the combination of airborne Lidar and panchromatic images in 1981 and 2021, we investigated the canopy height structure of tropical forests in Menglun sub-reserve in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve of Yunnan Province, and analyzed its relationship with environmental factors by using multiple regression tree (MRT) method. The results showed that forests in the Menglun sub-reserve could be clustered into seven types based on canopy height structures, with tropical rainforest, monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest, secondary forest, and flood plain forest as the main types. The potential solar radiation, altitude, terrain profile curvature, slope and the brightness value of imageries in 1981 and 2021 were main factors that drove the classification.

Background: LIN28B plays an important role in early embryonic development, but its role in villous trophoblast implantation and differentiation remains unknown. This study aims to verify the role of LIN28B in trophoblastic villous tissue and cells from women with URSA (unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion) and artificial termination of pregnancy (negative control, NC).

Methods: The gene and its protein expression level were detected with real-time quantitative PCR, Western immunoblotting analysis, and immunocytochemistry.

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide involved in controlling heavy metal movement in plants. Our previous study showed that GSH, when site-specifically applied to plant roots, inhibits Cd translocation from the roots to shoots in hydroponically cultured oilseed rape (Brassica napus) plants. A factor that led to this inhibitory effect was the activation of Cd efflux from root cells.

A novel 3D Eu(iii) metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF-1) formulated as [Eu(L)(H2O)(DMA)] (L = 2-(2-nitro-4-carboxylphenyl)terephthalic acid) has been successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by structural analyses. Eu-MOF-1 displays a new 3D framework containing EuIII ions, ligand L, and coordinated DMA molecules and water molecules. The fluorescence investigations indicate that Eu-MOF-1 emits bright red luminescence, and shows relatively high water stability and outstanding chemical stability under a relatively wide range of pH conditions.

Background: To delineate the clinical characteristics associated with long-term viral shedding (>21 days) in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Methods: In this retrospective study, factors associated with long-term (>21 days) severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA shedding were evaluated in a conhort of 609 patients from two hospitals in Wuhan.

Results: The median duration of SARS-CoV-2 viral shedding was 19 days (interquartile range, 10-28 days) among all patients.

Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), with a history of thousands of years, are widely used clinically with effective treatment. However, the drug delivery systems (DDSs) for TCMs remains major challenges due to the characteristics of multi-components including alkaloids, flavones, anthraquinones, glycosides, proteins, volatile oils and other types. Therefore, the novel preparations and technology of modern pharmaceutics is introduced to improve TCM therapeutic effects due to instability and low bioavailability of active ingredients.

Liver fibrosis can result from various causes and could progress to cirrhosis and cancer; however, there are no effective treatments due to that its molecular mechanism is unclear. liver fibrosis model made by () infection or Carbon tetrachloride (CCl) intraperitoneal injection is a conventional model used in liver fibrosis-related studies for mechanism or pharmaceutical research purposes. But the differences in the pathological progression, immune responses and the underlying mechanism between the two liver fibrosis model have not been carefully compared and characterized, which hinders us from correctly understanding and making better use of the two models.

is a common fungal pathogen in humans that colonizes the skin and mucosal surfaces of the majority healthy individuals. How disseminates into the bloodstream and causes life-threatening systemic infections in immunocompromised patients remains unclear. Plasminogen system activation can degrade a variety of structural proteins and is involved in several homeostatic processes.

β-Glucosidase activity assays constitute an important indicator for the early diagnosis of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis and qualitative changes in medicinal plants. The drawbacks of the existing methods are high consumption of both time and reagents, complexity in operation, and requirement of expensive instruments and highly trained personnel. The present study provides a simplified, highly selective, and miniaturized glucometer-based strategy for the detection of β-glucosidase activity.

The aim of this retrospective study was to examine how a low estradiol/follicle (E2/fol) may be related to in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI)-embryo transfer outcomes in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and non-PCOS patients, respectively. Between 2013 and 2017, 516 IVF/ICSI cycles (146 cycles in PCOS patients and 370 cycles in non-PCOS patients) with a long gonadotrophin releasing hormone receptor agonist protocol-including 338 involved fresh transfer cycles (89 cycles in PCOS patients and 249 cycles in non-PCOS patients)-were conducted. Outcomes were compared between 5 groups of PCOS patients defined by E2/fol (pg/mL) as follows: A, <140; B, 140 to 210; C, 210 to 280; D, 280 to 350; and E, >350.

Over the past decades, numerous Mollusca species have received more attention in development and utilization as valuable bio-resources. Many efforts have been focused on investigating mollusk polysaccharides because of their rich content, ease of extraction, diversified sorts, specific structure, various biofunctions and potent activities. To date, many mollusks, especially species of gastropods, bivalves, or cephalopods, have been reported containing polysaccharide compounds in tissues with abundant amount, and most of polysaccharides are obtainable through combining techniques of extraction, separation and purification.
