Background: Colorectal cancer remains a major global public health challenge. Its incidence is shaped by a complex interplay of screening programmes and age, period and cohort factors.

Methods: We introduce a novel Age-Period-Cohort-Screening (APCS) model to analyse trends in colorectal cancer incidence in Taiwan from 2000 to 2019.

Introduction: Frailty in older adults can lead to a gradual decline in organ function. Without timely diagnosis and intervention, this condition can progress rapidly, increasing the risk of disability and mortality.

Objectives: The aim of this project was to implement evidence-based practices for managing frailty in the medical ward to prevent disability in older patients.

Background: The World Health Organization aims for the global elimination of cervical cancer, necessitating modeling studies to forecast long-term outcomes.

Objective: This paper introduces a macrosimulation framework using age-period-cohort modeling and population attributable fractions to predict the timeline for eliminating cervical cancer in Taiwan.

Methods: Data for cervical cancer cases from 1997 to 2016 were obtained from the Taiwan Cancer Registry.

Background: The benefits of mammographic screening have been shown to include a decrease in mortality due to breast cancer. Taiwan's Breast Cancer Screening Program is a national screening program that has offered biennial mammographic breast cancer screening for women aged 50-69 years since 2004 and for those aged 45-69 years since 2009, with the implementation of mobile units in 2010. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance results of the program with changes in the previous (2004-2009) and latter (2010-2020) periods.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths globally, and Taiwan has implemented several health policies since 1997, such as anti-smoking campaigns and low-dose CT screenings, to improve lung cancer survival rates.
  • Research analyzed national cancer data from 1994 to 2020 and clinical characteristics of over 17,000 patients from 2006 to 2019, revealing a decrease in lung cancer mortality rates and significant improvements in 5-year survival rates.
  • The findings indicate that early detection through LDCT screening has led to a shift towards diagnosing lung cancer at earlier, more treatable stages, thereby enhancing patient survival rates.

Zellweger spectrum disorders (ZSD) are rare autosomal recessive disorders caused by defects in peroxisome biogenesis factor (PEX; peroxin) genes leading to impaired transport of peroxisomal proteins with peroxisomal targeting signals (PTS). Four patients, including a pair of homozygotic twins, diagnosed as ZSD by genetic study with different clinical presentations and outcomes as well as various novel mutations are described here. A total of 3 novel mutations, including a nonsense, a frameshift, and a splicing mutation, in PEX1 from ZSD patients were identified and unequivocally confirmed that the p.

Background And Aim: Currently, some countries still acknowledge double-contrast barium enema (DCBE) as a backup confirmatory examination when colonoscopy is not feasible or incomplete in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs. This study aims to compare the performance of colonoscopy and DCBE in terms of the risk of incident CRC after negative results in the fecal immunochemical test (FIT)-based Taiwan Colorectal Cancer Screening Program.

Methods: Subjects who had positive FITs and received confirmatory exams, either colonoscopy or DCBE, without the findings of neoplastic lesions from 2004 to 2013 in the screening program comprised the study cohort.

  • * An analysis revealed that while lung adenocarcinoma rates are increasing, lung squamous cell carcinoma rates are declining, especially among women in recent birth cohorts.
  • * Geographic hotspots for lung adenocarcinoma are predominantly found in northern, northeastern, and western coastal areas, with rising concerns over pollution contributing to these trends.

Pressure ulcers are a common problem among individuals who, for medical reasons, must spend most of their day in bed. Manually turning a person's body is labor intensive and can easily cause occupational injuries. To compare the effectiveness of a new assisted turning mattress in pressure management with that of a conventional air mattress.

Gastric cancer is an inflammation-related cancer triggered by Helicobacter pylori infection. Understanding of the natural disease course has prompted the hypothesis that gastric cancer can be prevented by administering a short-course antibiotic treatment to eradicate the H. pylori infection and interrupt this carcinogenic cascade.

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Taiwan, with its incidence rate having doubled over the past 20 years, raising concerns among health professionals and the public.
  • A study used advanced models to analyze breast cancer incidence trends from 1997 to 2016 and predict future trends, finding a rapid increase in age-standardized incidence rates, projected to reach a plateau by 2031.
  • The majority of future breast cancer cases are expected to occur in women aged 55 and older, highlighting the need for education on lifestyle changes and regular mammography screening to mitigate the impact of the disease.

  • Oral cancer is a significant health issue in Taiwan, especially among men, with incidence rates rising sharply since 1980, peaking in 2014.
  • A study analyzing data from 1997 to 2017 suggests that while recent trends show an increase in cases, younger adults and certain birth cohorts have already seen a decline in incidence.
  • The research predicts an overall decrease of 8.4% in oral cancer rates among men from 2017 to 2025, highlighting the need for effective public health strategies for prevention and control.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the complication rates linked to colonoscopies performed after a positive fecal immunochemical test (FIT), focusing on serious complications such as bleeding and perforation.
  • Data from the Taiwanese Colorectal Cancer Screening Program and National Health Insurance Research Database was analyzed, revealing that from 319,114 procedures, there were significant complications related to FIT-colonoscopies, with a higher complication rate than ordinary colonoscopies.
  • Key findings suggested that FIT-colonoscopies had more than double the risk of significant bleeding, particularly for patients undergoing polypectomies and those on antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications.
