Purpose: Previous animal studies have found a relationship between spatial frequency and myopia. New research in humans suggest that reduced high spatial content of the visual environment may be a contributing factor for myopia development. This study aims to review the literature and elucidate the potential biological mechanisms linking spatial frequency and myopia.

Extensive evidence suggests a correlation between environmental pollutants, specifically perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study aims to investigate the association and underlying mechanisms of PFAS-induced NAFLD in adolescents by employing a comprehensive approach of population-based studies, toxicogenomics, and animal models. A total of 2014 freshmen from Dali University were recruited for this study, with 1694 participants undergoing serum testing for PFAS exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze the distribution and factors affecting the anterior chamber angle (ACA) and anterior chamber volume (ACV) among Chinese young adults to improve early detection of primary angle closure glaucoma.
  • - Data was collected from 2014 participants through questionnaires and eye exams, using various measurement tools, with findings indicating that males generally have larger ACV and wider ACA compared to females.
  • - Results revealed that deeper anterior chamber depth (ACD) was linked to larger ACV and wider ACA, highlighting ACD as a key predictor for both measurements.

Background/aims: Animal models have shown that the absence of high-frequency visual information can precipitate the onset of myopia, but this relationship remains unclear in humans. This study aims to explore the association between the spatial frequency content of the visual environment and myopia in children.

Methods: Images from the rooms of children and their frequently visited outdoor areas were taken by their parents and collected by the researcher through questionnaires.

Background: The relationships between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and calcium and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are unclear.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the causal role of 25(OH)D concentrations, calcium concentrations, and dietary supplements use of vitamin D and calcium on risk of AMD and its subtypes.

Methods: Independent genetic variants associated with 25(OH)D and calcium concentrations were used as instrumental variables in published genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of European ancestry.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between air pollution and dry eye symptoms (DES) during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to determine if air pollution posed a higher risk than other factors.
  • A nationwide survey with over 21,000 participants found that living near industrial areas was associated with a higher risk of DES, while only sulfur dioxide (SO) showed a significant association with these symptoms.
  • The results suggest that other factors like depression, anxiety, and excessive internet use played a more substantial role in increasing DES risk, indicating a potential dampening effect of air pollution during the pandemic due to more time spent indoors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create population norms for the EQ-5D-5L (5L) health measurement tool in China and evaluate how various factors influence health-related quality of life (HRQoL) scores.
  • Researchers surveyed 21,909 participants aged 12 and older, collecting data on their health status, socioeconomic background, and lifestyle factors, analyzing how these relate to their health scores.
  • Results showed that older participants (especially those over 75) had poorer HRQoL, with notable issues in anxiety/depression and pain/discomfort, while younger individuals with better socioeconomic conditions reported higher quality of life scores.

Background: Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent and increase risks of various morbidities. However, the extent to which depressive symptoms could account for incidence of these chronic conditions, in particular multimorbidity patterns, remains to be examined and quantified.

Methods: For this cohort analysis, we included 9024-14,093 participants aged 45 years and older from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).

Air humidity is an important environmental factor restricting the fruit body growth of Auricularia heimuer. Low air humidity causes the fruit body to desiccate and enter dormancy. However, the survival mechanisms to low air humidity for fruit bodies before dormancy remain poorly understood.

Aims: To assess the impact of dry eye symptoms (DESs) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Chinese residents.

Methods: A total of 21 916 participants were involved in this nationwide cross-sectional study. All of them completed the Ocular Surface Disease Index-6 and the five-level European Quality of Life 5-Dimensional (EQ-5D) Questionnaire to assess the severity of DES and HRQOL, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of a kindergarten-based amblyopia screening program for 3-year-old children in China, comparing it to no screening.
  • The analysis showed an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $17,466 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY), which is below China's willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold of $38,223/QALY.
  • Results indicate a high likelihood (92.56%) that screening is cost-effective, even if delayed to ages 4 or 5, supporting the implementation of such programs in China.

Background/objectives: To determine the relationship between corneal stress-strain index (SSI) and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness.

Subjects/methods: 1645 healthy university students from a university-based study contributed to the analysis. The RNFL thickness was measured by high-definition optical coherence tomography (HD-OCT), axial length (AL) was measured by IOL Master, and corneal biomechanics including SSI, biomechanical corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP), and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured by Corvis ST.

  • The study focused on how multiple chronic illnesses (multimorbidity) affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in older adults living in rural China.
  • Data was collected from over 4,500 participants aged 60 and above, revealing that more than half experienced multimorbidity, which was linked to lower HRQOL scores.
  • Three types of multimorbidity patterns were identified: cardiovascular-metabolic, psycho-cognitive, and organic diseases, with psycho-cognitive diseases having the most significant negative impact on overall HRQOL.
