Background: Acute cellular rejection (ACR) remains a common complication causing significant morbidity post-liver transplantation. Non-human leukocyte antigen (non-HLA) mismatches were associated with an increased risk of ACR in kidney transplantation. Therefore, we hypothesized that donor-recipient non-HLA genetic mismatch is associated with increased ACR incidence post-liver transplantation.

Article Synopsis
  • Photothermal and photodynamic therapies are promising for treating bacteria and tumors but struggle with delivering heat and reactive oxygen species (ROS) effectively to their targets.
  • The researchers developed exosome-decorated bio-heterojunctions (E-bioHJ) made from MXene, liquid metal, and CT26 cell exosomes to improve therapeutic outcomes by decreasing the transfer distance of heat and ROS.
  • E-bioHJ facilitates targeted delivery to tumor cells, enhancing the generation of heat and ROS under near-infrared radiation, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death, thereby presenting a new approach to improve the effectiveness of these therapies.

To accurately assess the bioavailability risk of heavy metals (HMs) in a representative polymetallic mining region, we undertook an exhaustive analysis of Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, Cd, Zn, Mn, and Cr in soils from diverse land-use types, encompassing agricultural, forest, residential, and mining areas. We employed speciation analysis methods and a modified risk assessment approach to ascertain potential ecological threats posed by the HMs. Our findings reveal that both the total potential ecological risk and the modified bioavailability risks are most pronounced in the soil of the mining area.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied how Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), which causes severe diarrhea, has grown around the world and how it's related to the use of antibiotics.
  • CDI is becoming more serious, especially for older people and women, with deaths from it rising significantly since 1990, particularly in regions like North America and Latin America.
  • The research found that as more antibiotics are used, the risk of getting CDI also increases, so better prevention methods should be used, especially in areas where people are more at risk.

Genetic susceptibility to metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is complex and poorly characterized. Accurate characterization of the genetic background of hepatic fat content would provide insights into disease etiology and causality of risk factors. We performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) on two noninvasive definitions of hepatic fat content: magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) in 16,050 participants and fatty liver index (FLI) in 388,701 participants from the United Kingdom (UK) Biobank (UKBB).

  • Researchers wanted to find out how Vitamin D and its receptor (VD/VDR) work with the Notch pathway to help fix the gut lining during colitis, which is an inflammation of the intestines.
  • They used special mice without Vitamin D and conducted experiments to see how these pathways react when colitis is triggered.
  • The results showed that without Vitamin D and VDR, the mice had worse colitis symptoms, and enhancing the Notch pathway often helped protect the gut lining, making it a promising target for future treatments.

Background: The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasing, therefore, identifying biomarkers to predict those vulnerable to AD is imperative. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) serves as an independent risk factor for AD. Early prediction of T2D patients who may be more susceptible to AD, so as to achieve early intervention, is of great significance to reduce the prevalence of AD.

Two general protocols for the regioselective electrochemically enabled sulfonylation cyclization of -alkenylacrylamides with sodium sulfinates or sulfonyl hydrazides were described. These methods were carried out under mild, chemical oxidant-free, and transition-metal-free conditions with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance to provide sulfonyl-containing 4-pyrrolin-2-ones, which is readily scalable to the gram scale.

Surgical resection is essential for treating solid tumors, with success largely dependent on the complete excision of neoplastic cells. However, neurosurgical procedures must delicately balance tumor removal with the preservation of surrounding tissue. Achieving clear margins is particularly challenging in cases like glioblastoma due to the limitations of traditional white light visualization.

How to resolve the metabolic dark matter of microorganisms has long been a challenging problem in discovering active molecules. Diverse omics tools have been developed to guide the discovery and characterization of various microbial metabolites, which make it gradually possible to predict the overall metabolites for individual strains. The combinations of multi-omic analysis tools effectively compensates for the shortcomings of current studies that focus only on single omics or a broad class of metabolites.

Carbon-encapsulated metal (CEM) catalysts effectively address supported metal catalyst instability by protecting the active metal with a shell. However, mass transfer limitations lead to reduced activity for catalytic hydrogenation reaction over most CEM catalysts. Herein, we introduce a dopant strategy aimed at incorporating nickel metal within graphene-like shells (GLS) featuring oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs).
