Ips (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) bark beetles (BBs) are ecologically and economically devastating coniferous pests in the Northern Hemisphere. Although the microbial diversity associated with these beetles has been well studied, mechanisms of community assembly and the functional roles of key microbes remain poorly understood. This study investigates the microbial community structures and functions in both intestinal and non-intestinal environments of five Ips BBs using a metagenomic approach.

Three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3DSIM) is a popular method for observing subcellular/cellular structures or animal/plant tissues with gentle phototoxicity and 3D super-resolution. However, its time-consuming reconstruction process poses challenges for high-throughput imaging and real-time observation. Moreover, traditional 3DSIM typically requires more than six layers for successful reconstruction and is susceptible to defocused backgrounds.

Context: 3,4-Bis(3-nitrofurazan-4-yl) furoxan (DNTF) is a typical low-melting-point, high-energy-density compound that can serve as a cast carrier explosive. Therefore, understanding the safety of DNTF under different casting processes is of great significance for its efficient application. This study employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of temperature and pressure on the self-diffusion characteristics and mechanical sensitivity of DNTF.

Article Synopsis
  • - Coughing serves as a protective reflex to remove harmful substances from the airway, but how the brain processes this reflex isn't fully understood.
  • - Researchers created a method to quantitatively assess cough-like reflexes in mice and discovered that specific neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) play a critical role in these reflexes.
  • - The activation of these NTS neurons, which receive signals from vagal sensory neurons, triggers respiratory responses similar to coughing, highlighting their importance in initiating cough-like reflexes via a specific neural pathway to the cough center in the brain.

Inspired by mammal cranial sutures with spatiotemporal morphological variation, two-phase space-filling fractal metamaterial was designed. Designs with different levels of complexity are fabricated via multi-material polymer jetting. Mechanical tests and systematic finite element (FE) simulations are conducted to evaluate the mechanical performance of the designs.

Background: Considerable research has shown that ethnic trust reflects the existence of friendly relations among all ethnic groups and ethnic individuals, and can help in resolving ethnic conflicts and contradictions, promoting exchanges among various ethnic groups, which is highly relevant to social stability.

Methods: This research, including three studies, aimed to explore the conceptual structure of ethnic trust in China, and develop and validate a measurement of the ethnic trust scale. In the first study, we used free association and in-depth interview methodology, applied cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling analysis, and grounded theory to construct the theoretical framework of Chinese people's ethnic trust concept.

Ropeginterferon alfa-2b (Ropeg) is approved for the treatment of adults with polycythemia vera (PV). This report aims to analyze the ethnic sensitivity of Ropeg for the treatment of PV, comparing the pharmacokinetics (PK), efficacy, and safety profiles across diverse ethnic groups. We conducted a relevant review of PV and analysis of data obtained from clinical studies involving Ropeg.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding gene regulation across different species can greatly enhance our knowledge of life and improve clinical applications, but traditional research limits itself by focusing on single organisms without cross-species integration.
  • This study created a massive dataset of over 101 million single-cell transcriptomes from humans and mice, leading to the development of an AI model called GeneCompass, which incorporates various biological knowledge to improve gene regulation understanding.
  • GeneCompass not only performed better than existing models in single-species tasks but also facilitated new research avenues across species, identifying gene factors that can influence human embryonic stem cell differentiation into specific cell types.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials show promising applications in nanoelectronic devices due to their excellent physical and chemical properties, large specific surface area, and good flexibility. 2D AlSb, a representative of a new class of two-dimensional materials with a double-layer honeycomb (DLHC) structure was recently obtained in experiments and was reported to be a direct band gap semiconductor. Strain engineering is an effective way of tuning the properties of 2D materials.

To investigate the systemic immune-inflammation index and prognostic immune nutritional index in the prognostic evaluation of oral squamous cell carcinoma. We analyzed retrospectively the relationship between systemic immune-inflammation index, prognostic immune nutritional index and clinicopathological variables and the overall survival of 262 patients who underwent radical surgery. Multivariate analysis showed high systemic immune-inflammation index (Hazard ratio = 3.

By incorporating concepts from auxeticity, kinematic constraints, pre-tension induced compression (PIC), and suture tessellations, tiled sandwich composites are designed, demonstrating behaviors attributed to the synergy between auxeticity and pre-tension induced contact and compression, simultaneously triggered by a threshold strain. The designs can theoretically achieve on-demand Poisson's ratio in the widest range (-∞, +∞), and once triggered, the Poisson's ratio is stable under large deformation. Also, once the overall strain goes beyond the threshold, the designs enter into a PIC stage, ensuring the middle soft layer takes the tensile load, while the tiles are under compression via contact and the 3D articulation of the tooth-channel pairs.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines how two nitro explosives, LLM-105 and NQ, affect the thermal decomposition of DNTF by simulating their interactions at various temperatures.
  • - Results show that the presence of LLM-105 and NQ alters DNTF's decomposition mechanism, leading to different reaction pathways and the stability of products compared to pure DNTF systems.
  • - The analysis utilizes advanced computational methods (CP2K and GFNI-xTB) to accurately model and calculate the behaviors of the DNTF mixtures, revealing significant differences in how these materials break down under heat.

Perineural invasion (PNI) is an adverse prognostic feature of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, the understanding of the interactions between tumors and neural signaling within the tumor microenvironment is limited. In the present study, we found that MUC21 servers as an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in PDAC.

Aiming to decrease the recurrence of tumors and achieve patient satisfaction, the elicitation of immunotherapy and its integrated synergistic employment is a bright new direction in oncotherapy, yet an emergently challenging task. In particular, tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) regulation though light-induced photodynamic and photothermal therapy (PDT and PTT) is regarded as a powerful approach, which focuses on the systemic immune system instead of the tumor itself. Herein, this study reports an acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), named TPA-2CN, which was applied as a photosensitizer (PS) and photothermal agent (PTA).

A brief, practical catalytic process for the production of optically active γ-functionalized alcohols from relevant alkenes has been developed by using a robust Mn(III)/air/(MeSiH)O catalytic system combined with lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution. This approach demonstrates exceptional tolerance toward proximal functional groups present on alkenes, enabling the achievement of high yields and exclusive enantioselectivity. Under this sequential catalytic system, the chiral alkene precursors can also be converted into γ-functionalized alcohols and related acetates as separable single enantiomers.
