Methods: Patients with ovarian metastases from extragenital primary cancer confirmed by laparotomy surgery and ovarian metastases resection were retrospectively collected in a single institution during an 8-year period. A total of 147 cases were identified and primary tumor sites were colorectal region (49.

MS-275 is a synthetic benzamide derivative of the histone deacetylase inhibitor and is currently in phase I/II clinical trials. Many reports have shown that the anti-tumor activity of MS-275 in several types of cancer is mainly attributable to its capacity to induce the apoptotic death of tumor cells. It remains unclear if autophagy is involved in MS-275 treatment of cancer cells.

Purpose: To determine the incremental value of magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted (DW) imaging for the diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID).

Materials And Methods: We added DW sequences to conventional MR imaging in 187 patients with clinically suspected PID. The imaging findings included shape, signal intensity on T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and DW imaging, shade in the peripheral lesions, free pelvic fluid, and lymphadenopathy.

Context: There are currently few published studies that compare hippocampal volume (HCV) in children with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Aims : T0 o compare HCVs in children with TLE and in relation to normal controls (NC), and to analyze HCV change in the acute phase in pediatric subjects using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Setting and Design : T0 he case group (n=24) was matched in gender and age range with NC subjects (n=24).

A synthetic route for producing Cu(2)ZnGeSe(4) nanocrystals with narrow size distributions and controlled composition is presented. These nanocrystals were used to produce densely packed nanomaterials by hot-pressing. From the characterization of the thermoelectric properties of these nanomaterials, Cu(2)ZnGeSe(4) is demonstrated to show excellent thermoelectric properties.

By AFM we report the successful modulation of shell structure (morphology and shell thickness) of microcapsules through tailoring molecular substituents of chitosan. The shell thickness of hollow (HPCS/SA)(n) (n=5, 7, 9) capsules is more than 3 times that of the (QACS/SA)(n) (n=5, 7, 9) capsules, due to less charges carried by the neutral -NH(2) substituent group and the induced coily conformation in HPCS, while more charges carried by the positively charged -N(CH(3))(3)(+) substituent and the induced extended conformation in QACS (HPCS: hydroxyl propyl chitosan; QACS: quaternary ammonium chitosan; SA: sodium alginate). The ultrathin shells of microcapsules assembled in this work by the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique rather than the traditional method of mixing CS, SA and CaCl(2) enable the thickness modulation characterization by AFM on the atomic scale.

A novel fluorescent strategy has been developed for sensitive turn-on detection of Cu(2+) based on high efficiency of DNA-templated organic synthesis, great specificity of alkyne-azide click reaction to the catalysis of copper ions and the sequential strand displacement for signal transduction.

Purpose: To evaluate differences in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values for the solid component of benign and malignant ovarian surface epithelial tumors with the goal of differentiating benign versus malignant ovarian tumors preoperatively.

Materials And Methods: A total of 127 patients with 131 pelvic masses identified by ultrasound between January 2006 and January 2011 were enrolled in this study. 46 patients were diagnosed with benign tumors, and 85 patients were diagnosed with malignant pathologies.

Purpose: Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a promising anticancer agent due to its selective cytotoxicity to transformed cells. However, most human hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) develop resistance to TRAIL. Thus, there is an urgent need to investigate the molecular targets and the underlying mechanisms that may be involved in overriding the resistance of tumor cells to TRAIL.

Although shikonin, a naphthoquinone derivative, has showed anti-cancer activity, its precise molecular anti-tumor mechanism remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effects of shikonin on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in vitro and in vivo. Our results showed that shikonin induced apoptosis of Huh7 and BEL7402 but not nontumorigenic cells.

The aim of this study was to make an intuitive visualization of intraventricular convection (IC) and quantification of intraventricular convection velocity (ICV) in acute ischemic left ventricular (LV) failure of open-chest canines during early diastole contrast to the baseline conditions using color Doppler-based echocardiographic vector flow mapping (VFM). The animal care committee approved this prospective study. In 6 anesthetized open-chest beagle models, the emergence time and the emergence sites of IC in the LV cavity during early diastole were visualized at the standard apical 3-chamber (AP3c) views with the VFM at baseline conditions and after coronary artery ligation.

Glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1), which plays an important role in detoxification pathways to protect against damage caused by reactive metabolites of chemicals, has been considered as potential gastric cancer susceptibility genes. However, the published data on the association between GSTM1 present/null polymorphism and gastric cancer risk are still inconclusive. To derive a more precise estimation of the relationship, a meta-analysis was performed.

A sensitive method of online preconcentration followed by capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (CE-C(4)D) is evaluated as a novel approach for the determination of benzoic acid and sorbic acid in soy sauce. The online preconcentration technique, namely field-enhanced sample injection, coupled with CE-C(4)D were successfully developed and optimized. In order to reduce the complex matrix interference resulting from the constituents of soy sauce, a suitable sample clean-up procedure was also investigated for real sample pretreatment.

Tetrandrine, a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid component of broadly used traditional Chinese medicine, has antitumor effects against some cancers. In our study, we investigated the effects of tetrandrine on the human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that tetrandrine effectively induced apoptosis of liver cancer cell in a dose- and time-dependent manner accompanied by alteration of cell morphology, chromatin fragmentation and caspase activation.

Plant traits and individual plant biomass allocation of 57 perennial herbaceous species, belonging to three common functional groups (forbs, grasses and sedges) at subalpine (3700 m ASL), alpine (4300 m ASL) and subnival (≥5000 m ASL) sites were examined to test the hypothesis that at high altitudes, plants reduce the proportion of aboveground parts and allocate more biomass to belowground parts, especially storage organs, as altitude increases, so as to geminate and resist environmental stress. However, results indicate that some divergence in biomass allocation exists among organs. With increasing altitude, the mean fractions of total biomass allocated to aboveground parts decreased.

Nanos genes were required for differentiation of the anterior-posterior body axis in the Drosophila embryo. In addition to this somatic function, the nanos protein plays critical roles in the migration and survival of PGCs in vertebrates and invertebrates, but the regulating mechanisms of Nanos is largely undefined during the embyro development. In this study, we report a novel interaction between zebrafish Nanos and myosin light chain II (Mylz2).

Changes in the expression levels of alpha1,3 FucT-VII and carbohydrate product SLe X have been reported in certain types of malignant transformations. However, the specific role of FucT-VII in human colorectal carcinoma is still not clear. We evaluated the expression of FucT-VII in tumor specimens from 30 colorectal carcinoma patients by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.
