Aim: To establish an animal model of form deprivation amblyopia based on a simulated cataract intraocular lens (IOLs).

Methods: Poly(dimethyl siloxane)-SiO thin films (PSF) with different degrees of opacity as IOL materials were prepared. The light transmission of the PSF-IOL was measured, and its biosafety was determined by cell counting kit (CCK)-8 assay using the HLEC-B3 cell line and ARPE-19 cell line.

Objective: To explore the risk factors of radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) in patients with head and neck tumors undergoing radiotherapy.

Methods: A retrospective collection was conducted on patients with head and neck tumors who underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy in our hospital from April 1, 2015 to April 1, 2019. They were divided into an incidence group (n = 48) and a non-incidence group (n = 76) based on whether RIOM occurred, and relevant data was collected for comparison.

Background: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is one of the most ubiquitous complications of sepsis and is characterized by cognitive impairment, poor prognosis, and a lack of uniform clinical diagnostic criteria. Therefore, this study investigated the early diagnostic and prognostic value of serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in SAE.

Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis systematically searched for clinical trials with serum NSE information in patients with sepsis in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases from their inception to April 10, 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • - Neurocognitive disorders, like Alzheimer's and vascular dementia, involve serious cognitive decline that significantly impacts patients' mental status and presents economic challenges to society.
  • - There's currently a lack of effective treatments for these disorders, but resveratrol, a natural plant compound, shows promise in tackling cognitive decline by addressing inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain.
  • - The article reviews recent research on resveratrol's potential to treat various neurocognitive disorders and explores its mechanisms of action, offering insights into how these treatments may be developed further.

Unlabelled: Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) causes infectious hematopoietic necrosis and severe economic losses to salmon and trout aquaculture worldwide. Currently, the only commercial vaccine against IHNV is a DNA vaccine with some biosafety concerns. Hence, more effective vaccines and antiviral drugs are needed to prevent IHNV infection.

The clinical significance and prognostic role of whole-blood EBV-DNA in EBV-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to explore the diagnostic and prognostic value of EBV-DNA for NPC in a non-endemic region of China. We enrolled patients with chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV), nasopharyngitis (NA), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTCL-NT), and NPC.

Objective To investigate the changes in plasma amyloid-β (Aβ) level and their relationship with white matter microstructure in the patients with amnesic mild cognitive impairment(aMCI) and vascular mild cognitive impairment (vMCI).Methods A total of 36 aMCI patients,20 vMCI patients, and 34 sex and age matched healthy controls (HC) in the outpatient and inpatient departments of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University were enrolled in this study.Neuropsychological scales, including the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and the Activity of Daily Living Scale, were employed to assess the participants.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects on the dislocation and misalignment of the cuffed end of a double-lumen endobronchial tube (DLT) when a patient moves from a horizontal to a lateral position without fixation.

Methods: A total of 148 patients who had undergone video-assisted thoracoscope surgery were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups: a group in which the periportal end of the DLT was fixed with tape (group I;  = 74) and a group in which the periportal end of the DLT remained unfixed (group II;  = 74). Both groups were given an intravenous induction for double-lumen endobronchial intubation and then moved from a horizontal position to a lateral position, after which the alignment of the bronchial cuffed end of the DLT was assessed using a fiberoptic bronchoscope.

Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) is the causative pathogen of infectious hematopoietic necrosis, outbreaks of which are responsible for significant losses in rainbow trout aquaculture. Strains of IHNV isolated worldwide have been classified into five major genogroups, J, E, L, M, and U. To date, comparative transcriptomic analysis has only been conducted individually for the J and M genogroups.

Background: The resistance to radiotherapy remains a major obstacle that limits the efficacy of radiotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aims to illustrate the molecular mechanism underlying the role of LINC00665 in the radiosensitivity of NSCLC, which involves ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L3 (UCHL3).

Methods And Results: The expression of UCHL3 was determined in clinical tissue samples collected from NSCLC patients and NSCLC cell lines.

DDX3, a member of the DEAD-box RNA helicase family and has highly conserved ATP-dependent RNA helicase activity, has important roles in RNA metabolism and innate anti-viral immune responses. In this study, five transcript variants of the DDX3 gene were cloned and characterized from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). These five transcript variants of DDX3 encoded proteins were 74.

MicroRNAs play significant roles in various malignancies, with breast cancer (BC) being no exception. Consequently, we explored the functional mechanism of miR-135 in the progression of BC. In total, 55 pairs of BC and matched adjacent normal tissues were clinically collected from patients, followed by quantification of miR-135 and zinc finger protein 217 (ZNF217) expression patterns in BC tissues and cells.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) of presumed vascular origin are one of the most important neuroimaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), which are closely associated with cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to elucidate the pathogenesis of WMHs from the perspective of inflammation and hypoperfusion mechanisms. A total of 65 patients with WMHs and 65 healthy controls were enrolled in this study.

Background: Sepsis is a critical challenge for the older adults as the immune function is less responsive by aging. Although cell numbers seem preserved in the older adults, macrophages present age-related function decline, which including reduced chemokines, phagocytosis, and autophagy. ABT-263, an inhibitor of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, is reported had a senolytic effect which can selectively clear the senescent cells in vivo and rejuvenate the aged tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is difficult to detect early, leading to a low 5-year survival rate of around 15%.
  • Research indicates that long non-coding RNA ALMS1 intronic script 1 (ALMS1-IT1) is linked to poor prognosis in LUAD, with high levels of ALMS1-IT1 and its related gene AVL9 correlating with worse patient outcomes.
  • Studies show that reducing ALMS1-IT1 expression leads to decreased cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in LUAD, suggesting that ALMS1-IT1 and AVL9 contribute to the cancer's aggressive features through regulation of the cyclin-dependent kinase pathway.
