Liver cancer with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) is a frequent finding and is related to poor prognosis. Surgical resection provides a more promising prognosis in selected patients. The purpose of this study was to explore the application of 3D (3-dimensional) visualization and image fusion technology in liver cancer with PVTT surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Acne vulgaris is a widespread skin condition in teens and young adults, often inadequately treated with existing options.
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using 5-Aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) and the biologic drug adalimumab may enhance acne treatment effectiveness due to their complementary effects.
  • A case study demonstrates significant improvement in severe acne after combining ALA-PDT and adalimumab, suggesting potential benefits of this combination for better long-term results.

Hybrid breeding is of economic importance in agriculture for increasing yield, yet the basis of heterosis is not well understood. In Arabidopsis, crosses between different accessions produce hybrids with different levels of heterosis relative to parental phenotypes in biomass. In all hybrids, the advantage of the F1 hybrid in both phenotypic uniformity and yield gain is lost in the heterogeneous F2.

In hybrids of Arabidopsis, cotyledons influence the amount and proportion of hybrid vigor in total plant growth. We found Arabidopsis cotyledons are essential for plant growth and in some hybrids for hybrid vigor. In hybrids between C24 and Landsberg erecta (Ler), biomass vigor (heterosis) occurs in the first few days after sowing (DAS), with hybrid cotyledons being larger than those of their parents.

d-Limonene is a fragrant chemical that widely exists in aromatic products. Isotopic labelling of water molecules plus GC-MS and GC-PCI-Q-TOF analyses were used to investigate the influence of water molecules on chemical transformation of d-limonene induced by UV irradiation and air exposure. The results showed that the synergistic effect of UV irradiation, air exposure and water presence could facilitate d-limonene transformation into the limonene oxides: p-mentha-2,8-dienols, hydroperoxides, carveols, l-carvone and carvone oxide.

Limonin is a bioactive compound that is traditionally extracted from citrus seeds using organic solvents or alkaline/metal ion solutions. In the present study, pummelo [Citrus grandis] peel was investigated for limonin preparation using a novel process consisting of water extraction, ammonium sulfate precipitation and resin adsorption. The pummelo peel was determined to have 4.

Article Synopsis
  • F1 hybrids are high-yielding and uniform, but the F2 generation loses these advantages and shows variability in traits.
  • Researchers created pure breeding hybrid mimic lines that are mostly homozygous, consisting of specific chromosomal segments from parent plants, which may harbor key genes for hybrid vigor.
  • Increased expression of the transcription factor PIF4 and auxin-related genes in F1 hybrids and hybrid mimics may enhance leaf growth and early germination, suggesting these traits are indicators of hybrid vigor.

Hybrid vigor or heterosis refers to the superior performance of F hybrid plants over their parents. Heterosis is particularly important in the production systems of major crops. Recent studies have suggested that epigenetic regulation such as DNA methylation is involved in heterosis, but the molecular mechanism of heterosis is still unclear.

Aldehydes are key aroma contributors of citrus essential oils. White Guanxi honey pummelo essential oil (WPEO) was investigated in its aldehyde constituents and their transformations induced by UV irradiation and air exposure by GC-MS, GC-O, and sensory evaluation. Nine aldehydes, i.

F1 hybrids can outperform their parents in yield and vegetative biomass, features of hybrid vigor that form the basis of the hybrid seed industry. The yield advantage of the F1 is lost in the F2 and subsequent generations. In Arabidopsis, from F2 plants that have a F1-like phenotype, we have by recurrent selection produced pure breeding F5/F6 lines, hybrid mimics, in which the characteristics of the F1 hybrid are stabilized.

Brain tumor stem cells (BTSC) are predicted to be critical drivers of tumor progression due to their self-renewal capacity and limitless proliferative potential. Recent studies suggest that stem cells are controlled by a particular microenvironment known as a "niche". We therefore analysed human glioma tissues and found that the CD133(+) and nestin(+) niches are perivascularly localized in all glioma tissues.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal type of brain tumor. The formation of abnormal, dysfunctional tumor vasculature and glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) are believed to be the major components of the inability to treat these tumors effectively. We analyzed 70 glioblastoma samples by immunohistochemistry and double immunofluorescence staining.

Objective: To investigate the effect of all-trans retinoic acid(ATRA) on the proliferation and differentiation of brain tumor stem cells(BTSCs) in vitro.

Methods: Limiting dilution and clonogenic assay were used to isolate and screen BTSCs from the fresh specimen of human brain glioblastoma. The obtained BTSCs, which were cultured in serum-free medium, were classified into four groups in accordance with the composition of the different treatments.

Beta-escin, a natural triterpenoid saponin isolated from the seed of the horse chestnut, is known to generate a wide variety of biochemical and pharmacological effects. The purpose of the present study was to examine the apoptotic and antiproliferative activity of beta-escin in HL-60 human acute myeloid leukaemia cells. Antiproliferative activity was examined by soft agar colony assay and the trypan blue exclusion method.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the link between specific genetic variations (polymorphisms) in cytokine genes and the risks of acute rejection (AR) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) recurrence after liver transplantation in Han Chinese patients.
  • - Researchers analyzed DNA from 186 liver transplant recipients and compared the genetic data with 151 healthy controls, focusing on single-nucleotide polymorphisms in genes like IL-10, TNFalpha, and TGFbeta1.
  • - While some associations were observed, particularly in the IL-10 gene, the results did not show significant differences after adjusting for multiple comparisons, indicating that these genetic polymorphisms may not be strong predictors of AR or HBV recurrence.
