In recent years, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and gas therapy (GT) have emerged as research hotspots due to their excellent cancer treatment efficacy. By combining the advantages of both, the simultaneous and controllable release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) has become a possibility. This paper describes the design of two Ru(II) complexes, [Ru(bpy)(NFIP)](PF) (Ru1, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, NFIP = 4-nitro-3-trifluoromethylaniline-1-imidazo[4,5-][1,10]phenanthroline) and [Ru(phen)(NFIP)](PF) (Ru2, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), through the integration of the polypyridyl ruthenium structure and a photoresponsive NO donor.

Ionogels have attracted considerable attention as versatile materials due to their unique ionic conductivity and thermal stability. However, relatively weak mechanical performance of many existing ionogels has hindered their broader application. Herein, we develop robust, tough, and impact-resistant mechanically interlocked network ionogels (MINs) by incorporating ion liquids with mechanical bonds that can dissipate energy while maintain structural stability.

Multiple porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) subtypes coinfect numerous pig farms in China, and commercial PRRSV vaccines offer limited cross-protection against heterologous strains. Our previous research confirmed that a PRRSV lineage 1 branch attenuated live vaccine (SD-R) provides cross-protection against HP-PRRSV, NADC30-like PRRSV and NADC34-like PRRSV. HP-PRRSV has undergone significant genetic variation following nearly two decades of evolution and has transformed into a subtype referred to as HP-like PRRSV, which also exhibits high pathogenicity.

Hydrogel-based soft machines are promising in diverse applications, such as biomedical electronics and soft robotics. However, current fabrication techniques generally struggle to construct multimaterial three-dimensional hydrogel architectures for soft machines and robots, owing to the inherent hydrogel softness from the low-density polymer network nature. Herein, we present a multimaterial cryogenic printing (MCP) technique that can fabricate sophisticated soft hydrogel machines with accurate yet complex architectures and robust multimaterial interfaces.

Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) spectroscopy is a non-invasive, non-contact, label-free optical technique that can provide information on the mechanical properties of a material on the sub-micron scale. Over the last decade it has seen increased applications in the life sciences, driven by the observed significance of mechanical properties in biological processes, the realization of more sensitive BLS spectrometers and its extension to an imaging modality. As with other spectroscopic techniques, BLS measurements not only detect signals characteristic of the investigated sample, but also of the experimental apparatus, and can be significantly affected by measurement conditions.

A cascade phosphorylation cycloisomerization of readily accessible ynones and diphenylphosphine oxides facilitated by potassium phosphate is described, allowing for the straightforward synthesis of C4-phosphorylated quinoline scaffolds. The formation of a C-P bond and a C-N bond is achieved in a single procedure without the need for pre-assembled quinoline cores prior to phosphorylation. This transformation operates without the requirement for metals or oxidants and exhibits excellent compatibility with various functional groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Adipokines are important for the thermogenesis (heat production) in beige fat cells, but the specific processes are still unclear.* ! -
  • This study reveals that signaling between VEGFB and VEGFR1 enhances thermogenesis in white adipose tissue (WAT), with VEGFB increasing in fat cells and VEGFR1 in macrophages when thermogenesis is activated.* ! -
  • Removing VEGFB from fat cells reduces browning in WAT, while adding VEGFB boosts thermogenesis, but this effect is negated if VEGFR1 in macrophages is knocked out; the study also shows how VEGFB influences signaling pathways to promote norepinephrine clearance in macrophages.* !

Colombia is well-positioned for the development of sustainable energy due to its abundance of natural resources, which include water, wind, and sun. Regulating the safe and sustainable use of offshore wind energy, which is considered non-conventional, is lacking in the nation, nonetheless. The development of offshore wind technology in Colombia shows potential to meet energy needs during dry hydrological conditions and El Niño/Southern Oscillation events when the hydroelectric system power supply is low.

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is the main welding process in the production of stainless steel welded pipe. According to the morphological characteristics of the welding molten pool image during the TIG welding process of stainless steel welded pipes, the exact position of the tungsten needle tip is calculated using image moments. Extract the weld region in the contour of the molten pool, interpolate the contour curve based on the cubic B-spline curve interpolation method, utilize the characteristics of the S-G filter, remove the interference coordinates in the contour curve through the detrending of the contour curve, extract the weld feature points, and realize the accurate identification of weld seams.

Diabetic wounds cannot undergo normal wound healing due to changes in the concentration of hyperglycemia in the body and soon evolve into chronic wounds causing amputation or even death of patients. Diabetic wounds directly affect the quality of patients and social medical management; thus researchers started to focus on skin transplantation technology. The acellular fish skin grafts (AFSGs) are derived from wild fish, which avoids the influence of human immune function and the spread of the virus through low-cost decellularization.

Accurate segmentation of the adrenal gland from abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans is a crucial step towards facilitating the computer-aided diagnosis of adrenal-related diseases such as essential hypertension and adrenal tumors. However, the small size of the adrenal gland, which occupies less than 1% of the abdominal CT slice, poses a significant challenge to accurate segmentation. To address this problem, we propose a novel multi-level context-aware network (MCNet) to segment adrenal glands in CT images.
