Leflunomide treatment for patients hospitalised with COVID-19: DEFEAT-COVID randomised controlled trial.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of leflunomide (L) added to the standard-of-care (SOC) treatment in COVID-19 patients hospitalised with moderate/critical clinical symptoms.

Design: Prospective, open-label, multicentre, stratified, randomised clinical trial.

Setting: Five hospitals in UK and India, from September 2020 to May 2021.

Small Airway Dysfunction in Asthma Is Associated with Perceived Respiratory Symptoms, Non-Type 2 Airway Inflammation, and Poor Responses to Therapy.

Background: Emerging evidence has indicated that small airway dysfunction (SAD) contributes to the clinical expression of asthma.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to explore the relationships of SAD assessed by forced expiratory flow between 25 and 75% (FEF25-75%), with clinical and inflammatory profile and treatment responsiveness in asthma.

Method: In study I, dyspnea intensity (Borg scale), chest tightness, wheezing and cough (visual analog scales, VASs), and pre- and post-methacholine challenge testing (MCT) were analyzed in asthma patients with SAD and non-SAD.

The Application of ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy and the Reversible DNA Conformation as a Sensor to Test the Effectiveness of Platinum(II) Anticancer Drugs.

Platinum(II) complexes have been found to be effective against cancer cells. Cisplatin curbs cell replication by interacting with the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), reducing cell proliferation and eventually leading to cell death. In order to investigate the ability of platinum complexes to affect cancer cells, two examples from the class of polyfluorophenylorganoamidoplatinum(II) complexes were synthesised and tested on isolated DNA.

ATR-FTIR spectroscopy shows changes in ovarian cancer cells after incubation with novel organoamidoplatinum(ii) complexes.

Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FT-IR) spectroscopy has been applied to compare the effect of the new organoamidoplatinum(ii) complexes [Pt{NH(p-HC6F4)CH2CH2N(p-HC6F4)}(py)(O2CR)] (R = C6F4 or 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) with cisplatin on cells from one cisplatin-sensitive ovarian cancer cell line (A2780) and one cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell line (A2780R). After incubation of the cells with cisplatin, 1 and 2 for 48 hours, distinct changes were found in the ATR-FT-IR spectra. Comparison of the second derivative spectra suggests that 1 and 2 induce similar chemical changes in both cell lines, A2780 and A2780R, while cisplatin had a slight effect on A2780 and A2780R cells.

To elucidate the effect of feed and Nosema ceranae infection on the gut microbiota of honey bee (Apis cerana), we used 16S rRNA sequencing to survey the gut microbiota of honey bee workers fed with sugar water or beebread and inoculated with or without N. ceranae.

[Diversity of culturable endophytic fungi of common reed (Phragmites australis) in coastal wetland.].

Endophytic fungi play an important ecological role in promoting growth and alleviating environmental stress of host plants. In this study, we investigated the diversity and community composition of endophytic fungi isolated from the common reed in wetlands of the Yellow River Delta. A total of 318 endophytic fungal isolates were obtained from 1350 tissue (leaf, stem, and root) fragments and from three tidal zones with different soil salinity levels.

Objective: To determine whether anxiety and depression are associated with greater respiratory discomfort in asthma.

Methods: Adults with asthma (n = 230) underwent methacholine (Mch) challenge. Anxiety and depression, asthma control, and quality of life were evaluated at study entry by using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Asthma Control Test, and Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, respectively.

Methods: Several studies have investigated finite element models for dental implants; however, only a few have examined a model for the implants during different stages of osseointegration. In this study, mandible models were reconstructed using computer tomographic data, and bone qualities and stress distributions were investigated as well.

Background: Human cells release nano-sized vesicles called exosomes, containing mRNA, miRNA and specific proteins. Exosomes from one cell can be taken up by another cell, which is a recently discovered cell-to-cell communication mechanism. Also, exosomes can be taken up by different types of cancer cells, but the potential functional effects of mast cell exosomes on tumor cells remain unknown.

Neojaponicone A, a bioactive sesquiterpene lactone dimer with an unprecedented carbon skeleton from Inula japonica.

Five new dimeric sesquiterpene lactones, neojaponicone A (1) and japonicones M-P (2-5) were isolated from the aerial part of Inula japonica. Neojaponicone A (1) has an unprecedented carbon skeleton with an unusual valerolactone system formed between a guaianolide and an eudesmane. The structure and absolute configuration of 1 were established by extensive analysis of spectroscopic data and computational approaches.

HBx protein induces EMT through c-Src activation in SMMC-7721 hepatoma cell line.

The relationships between epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx), and the non-receptor tyrosine kinase c-Src were investigated. The HBx gene transfected SMMC-7721 cells underwent morphological changes from a classic epithelial morphology to a spindle-like shape. The HBx transfection increased the invasive potential of these cells.

Evidence for a glutamatergic input to pontine preganglionic neurons of the superior salivatory nucleus in rat.

Parasympathetic preganglionic neurons of the superior salivatory nucleus (SSN), which projects to the pterygopalatine ganglion (PPG), modulate salivation, lacrimation, and cerebrovascular tone. Our previous studies suggest that excitatory projections from the nucleus tractus solitarii modulate cerebrovascular tone by actions on SSN neurons. In this study we sought to test the hypothesis that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) type glutamate receptors and vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUT) are present in the SSN and that SSN neurons receive glutamatergic input.
