Chlortoluron chlorination is studied in the pH range of 3-10 at 25 ± 1°C. The chlorination kinetics can be well described by a second-order kinetics model, first-order in chlorine and first-order in chlortoluron. The apparent rate constants were determined and found to be minimum at pH 6, maximum at pH 3 and medium at alkaline conditions.

The course of intermittent sediment disturbance-sedimentation, that sediment disturbance was for 10 min and succeeding sedimentation was for 1430 min each day over a 17-day period, was simulated to investigate the variation of bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) in overlying water. The results showed that the concentrations of BAP increased obviously at Oh after each disturbance, and the maximum concentration of BAP was reached up to 2.82 mg x L(-1) after 1 d (the first disturbance).

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) measurements for water samples with a high dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, including nitrite, nitrate and ammonia) to total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) ratio using traditional methods are inaccurate due to the cumulative analytical errors of independently measured nitrogen species (TDN and DIN). In this study, we present a nanofiltration (NF) pretreatment to increase the accuracy and precision of DON measurements by selectively concentrating DON while passing through DIN species in water samples to reduce the DIN/TDN ratio. Aim: To evaluate the clinical value of serum high mobility group box chromosomal protein 1 (HMGB1) levels in making the early diagnosis of recurrent cervical squamous cell carcinomas (CSCC) and compare it with the value of serum squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA), cytokeratin fragment (CYFRA) 21-1, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels.

Methods: Immunohistochemical staining of tissue from 64 patients with recurrent CSCCs, 72 patients with non-recurrent carcinoma, and 28 healthy participants was performed to determine the expression of HMGB1 protein. The serum levels of the 4 markers in 112 patients with recurrent CSCC, 174 patients with non-recurrent disease, and 128 healthy participants were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Circulatory responses of crucian carp injected intraperitoneally with extracted microcystins (MCs) were studied at sublethal and lethal doses (150 and 600 microg MC kg(-1) body mass, respectively). Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), heart rate, hematocrit (Hct), red blood cell (RBC) counts, and circulating blood volume (BV) were assayed at 0, 1, 3, 12, 24, and 48 h post-toxin administration. Many Chinese therapeutic herbs that are traditionally used in combination demonstrate significantly better pharmacological effects when used in the combination than when used alone. In the present study, the antioxidant activities of six herbs ((Paeonia lactiflora (PL), Atractylodes macrocephala (AMA), Angelica sinensis (AS), Astragalus membranaceus (AME), Glycyrrhiza uralensis (GU) and Rheum officinale (RO)), which were historically combined into eight traditional Chinese herb pairs (TCHPs) (AME-AS, AME-AMA, AME-RO, AME-GU, AME-PL, PL-AS, PL-AMA and PL-GU), were investigated in vitro by assessing the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazine (DPPH)-radical scavenging abilities of the herbs.
