Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common diseases in elderly men, the incidence of which gradually increases with age and leads to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) are widely used for the treatment of BPH in China and some other countries. To explore the molecular mechanisms of CHMs for BPH, we conducted a review based on peer-reviewed English-language publications in PubMed and Web of Science databases from inception to December 31, 2023.

The detection of X-rays has always been a frontier of scientific research. An Eu-MOF with both X-ray-induced photochromic and scintillation properties has been synthesized through the combination of a photochromism-active viologen ligand and rare earth Eu element with high-efficiency absorption of X-rays. In a bright environment, Eu-MOF exhibits different color changes under high-energy X-rays and low-energy X-rays, which can effectively distinguish X-rays.

Article Synopsis
  • Amphotericin B colloidal dispersion (ABCD) is a safer version of amphotericin B used to treat serious fungal infections, and a study was done to assess its safety and pharmacokinetics (PK) in healthy Chinese subjects.
  • The researchers developed a population PK model to predict how standard doses (3 or 4 mg/kg) would perform in infected patients, using Monte Carlo simulations to analyze effectiveness against Candida albicans.
  • Findings showed that administering ABCD at doses of 3 or 4 mg/kg resulted in high efficacy rates (over 98% effective) in significantly reducing Candida albicans and that these doses are suitable for treating invasive fungal infections.

This study analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of existing animal models in China and abroad and their goodness of fit based on the clinical characteristics and diagnostic criteria of stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and western medicine, followed by the collation and summarization of model evaluation methodologies. The results showed that the existing animal models of stable COPD were mainly modeled via smoke exposure or the combination of multiple methods like smoke exposure plus lipopolysaccharide or protease or bacterial infection. These animal models generally failed to simulate the clinical characteristics of TCM, and their goodness of fit in western medicine was higher than that in TCM.

Regulatory guidance requires the quantification of encapsulated and free doxorubicin for a liposomal doxorubicin injection bioequivalence study. Due to the instability of liposome formulations in plasma samples, the release of free drug from the liposomal encapsulated doxorubicin during sample handling would result in elevation of measured free doxorubicin concentration. To prevent the potential release of free drug, stabilizer reagents and procedures were successfully developed and validated to adequately stabilize liposomal drugs in plasma samples during sample collection, storage and extraction.
