The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of research investigating the potential role of microsatellite instability (MSI) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), with a focus on molecular mechanisms, detection methods, and therapeutic approaches. Search for articles involved the PubMed and Scopus. Previous retrospective and prospective studies identified variations between oral cancers that exhibit microsatellite stability and LOH.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in various oral mucosal lesions among Turkish patients, revealing its significant role in benign, premalignant, and malignant lesions.
  • Out of 228 lesions analyzed, HPV DNA was found in 17 cases, leading to a prevalence rate of 7.4%, with higher rates in benign lesions compared to premalignant and malignant ones.
  • The research suggests that there are notable differences in HPV prevalence based on lesion location and patient age, emphasizing the importance of HPV in oral health within Central Anatolia, Turkey.

Unlabelled: This research aims to examine the impact of programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4), microRNA-21 (miR-21) and microRNA-208a (miR-208a) transcripts, and protein levels on oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) development in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

Methods: The research investigation involved the collection of saliva, blood, and tissue samples from a total of 20 patients diagnosed with OSCC, 15 patients diagnosed with OED, and 15 healthy individuals. PDCD4, miR-21, and miR-208a expression was performed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).
