Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a significant and growing global health challenge, making early detection and slowing disease progression essential for improving patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic methods such as glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria are insufficient to capture the complexity of CKD. In contrast, omics technologies have shed light on the molecular mechanisms of CKD, helping to identify biomarkers for disease assessment and management.

Naturally occurring fragments of collagen type I alpha 1 chain (COL1A1) have been previously associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), with some fragments showing positive and others negative associations. Using urinary peptidome data from healthy individuals (n = 1131) and CKD patients (n = 5585) this aspect was investigated in detail. Based on the hypothesis that many collagen peptides are derived not from the full, mature collagen molecule, but from (larger) collagen degradation products, relationships between COL1A1 peptides containing identical sequences were investigated, with the smaller (offspring) peptide being a possible degradation product of the larger (parent) one.

Protein mycoloylation is a recently identified unusual post-translational modification (PTM) exclusively observed in Mycobacteriales, an order of bacteria that includes several human pathogens. These bacteria possess a distinctive outer membrane, known as the mycomembrane, composed of very long-chain fatty acids called mycolic acids. It has been demonstrated that a few mycomembrane proteins undergo covalent modification with mycolic acids in the model organism through the action of mycoloyltransferase MytC.

Motivation: Structured vocabularies for drugs and diseases represent, besides their primary use for annotating scientific literature or scientific information in general, a valuable resource for visualizing aggregated information. The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) ontologies are widely used structured vocabularies for diseases and drugs, respectively. Their hierarchical tree-like structure can be used as a basis for creating intuitive visual displays for specific diseases and drugs within their higher-order classifications.

EPAC1, a cAMP-activated GEF for Rap GTPases, is a major transducer of cAMP signaling and a therapeutic target in cardiac diseases. The recent discovery that cAMP is compartmentalized in membrane-proximal nanodomains challenged the current model of EPAC1 activation in the cytosol. Here, we discover that anionic membranes are a major component of EPAC1 activation.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a glomerular lesion often associated with nephrotic syndrome. It is also associated with a high risk of progression to end-stage kidney disease. Current treatment of FSGS is limited to systemic corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibition, along with inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

The discourse on the future of work should learn from a turn in philosophy that occurred in the 1980s, one that recognizes the good life towards which ethics strives can only be reached on a foundation of caring relationships (Gillian, 1982; Noddings, 1984). Care ethics recognizes that human well-being is a group project, one that involves strong relationships, and concern for bodies and emotions. Too often, these features are left out of research exploring robotics in the workplace.

Objectives: The insula is a brain area involved in the modulation of autonomic responses. Previous studies have focused mainly on its heart rate regulatory function, but its role in vascular control is not well defined. Ictal/postictal blood pressure (BP) fluctuations may have a role in the pathogenesis of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.

DPCD is a protein that may play a role in cilia formation and whose absence leads to primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a rare disease caused by impairment of ciliated cells. Except for high-throughput studies that identified DPCD as a possible RUVBL1 (R1) and RUVBL2 (R2) partner, no in-depth cellular, biochemical, and structural investigation involving DPCD have been reported so far. R1 and R2 proteins are ubiquitous highly conserved AAA + family ATPases that assemble and mature a plethora of macromolecular complexes and are pivotal in numerous cellular processes, especially by guaranteeing a co-chaperoning function within R2TP or R2TP-like machineries.

Objective: Medication errors resulting in adverse drug events may occur during transition of care. Most can be prevented with a medication reconciliation. California Senate Bill 1254 requires a pharmacist to perform an admission medication reconciliation (AMR) to obtain an accurate medication list for each high-risk patient upon hospital admission.

Objective: Direct cortical stimulation (DCS) is standard for intracranial presurgical evaluation in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Few studies have reported levels of concordance between spontaneous seizure generators and triggered seizures during DCS. The present work reports validity measures of DCS for detecting the seizure onset zone (SOZ) during stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG).

The last decade has seen rise in technologies that allow humans to send and receive intimate touch across long distances. Drawing together platform studies, digital intimacy studies, phenomenology of touch, and ethics of technology, we argue that these new haptic communication devices require specific ethical consideration of consent. The paper describes several technologies, including Kiiroo teledildonics, the Kissenger, the Apple Watch, and Hey Bracelet, highlighting how the sense of touch is used in marketing to evoke a feeling of connection within the digital sphere.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral drug administration is typically limited by poor absorption and quick breakdown in the digestive system, necessitating injections for effective delivery.
  • A new orally dosed liquid auto-injector has been developed, allowing for up to 4 mg doses of a bioavailable drug with injection-like absorption rates and achieving up to 80% bioavailability in just 30 minutes.
  • Tests on swine show this method effectively delivers clinically relevant doses of commonly injected drugs, highlighting its potential for real-world medical applications.

There has been limited research devoted to secondary electron emission (SEE) from nano-materials using rapid and heavy ion bombardment. Here we report a comparison of SEE properties between novel nano-materials with a three-dimensional nano-structure composed of a mostly regular pattern of rods and gold used as a standard material for SEE under bombardment of heavy ions at energies of a few MeV/nucleon. The nano-structured materials show enhanced SEE properties when compared with gold.

Dehydrocoupling of the adduct of dimethylamine and borane, NH(CH)-BH leads to dimethylaminoborane with formal composition N(CH)-BH. The structure of this product depends on the conditions of the synthesis; it may crystallize either as a dimer in a triclinic space group forming a four-membered ring [N(CH)-BH] or as a trimer forming a six-membered ring [N(CH)-BH] in an orthorhombic space group. Due to the denser packing, the six-membered ring in the trimer structure should be energetically more stable than the four-membered ring.

Objective: The link between brain function and cardiovascular dynamics is an important issue yet to be elucidated completely. The insula is a neocortical brain area that is thought to have a cardiac chronotropic regulatory function, but its role in cardiac contractility is unknown. We aimed to analyze the variability in heart rate and cardiac contractility after functional activation of different insular regions through direct electrical stimulation (E-stim) in humans.

Carbon sequestration and enhanced oil recovery are two important geochemical applications currently deployed using carbon dioxide (CO), a prevalent greenhouse gas. Despite the push to find ways to use and store excess CO, the development of a large-area monitoring system is lacking. For these applications, there is little literature reporting the development and testing of sensor systems capable of operating in remote areas without maintenance and having significantly low cost to allow their deployment across a large land area.
