Medicinally relevant sulfoximines are accessed from C-S coupling of sulfonimidates and commercially available organomagnesium reagents. Sulfonimidates are conveniently synthesized by oxidative alkoxylation of readily available sulfinamides. This constitutes a general C-S coupling approach for the synthesis of sulfoximines.

Objective: The identification of veins by medical personnel is a critical skill that is necessary to draw blood or administer intravenous fluids and medications. Because a normal consumer camera can act as a multispectral imaging apparatus, operating with three broadband detectors, we hypothesized that a standard smartphone camera might be employed for enhanced visualization of veins in human skin.

Study: Video and images of subcutaneous veins were acquired using the rear-facing iSight camera from an iPhone 6, with a fixed aperture of f/2.

Despite the fact that non-aqueous uranium chemistry is over 60 years old, most polarised-covalent uranium-element multiple bonds involve formal uranium oxidation states IV, V, and VI. The paucity of uranium(III) congeners is because, in common with metal-ligand multiple bonding generally, such linkages involve strongly donating, charge-loaded ligands that bind best to electron-poor metals and inherently promote disproportionation of uranium(III). Here, we report the synthesis of hexauranium-methanediide nanometre-scale rings.

The enantioselective nickel-catalyzed desymmetrization of allenyl cyclohexa-2,5-dienones by reaction with arylboronic acids is described. Nickel-catalyzed arylation of the allene gives allylnickel species, which undergo cyclization by 1,4-allylation to produce hexahydroindol-5-ones and hexahydrobenzofuran-5-ones with three contiguous stereocenters in high diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

The enantioselective synthesis of highly functionalized chiral cyclopent-2-enones by the reaction of alkynyl malonate esters with arylboronic acids is described. These desymmetrizing arylative cyclizations are catalyzed by a chiral phosphinooxazoline/nickel complex, and cyclization is enabled by the reversible E/Z isomerization of alkenylnickel species. The general methodology is also applicable to the synthesis of 1,6-dihydropyridin-3(2H)-ones.

Background: Survival and relapse after gastric cancer surgery are largely attributed to tumor biology and surgical radicality; yet, other prognostic factors have been reported, including respiratory sepsis and anastomotic leakage, but not global morbidity severity score (MSS). The hypothesis tested was that MSS would be associated with both disease-free (DFS) and overall survival (OS).

Methods: Consecutive 373 patients undergoing potentially curative surgery for gastric adenocarcinoma between 2004 and 2016 in a UK cancer network were studied.

Background: Barrett's esophagus (BE) is a premalignant condition characterized by replacement of the esophageal lining with metastatic columnar epithelium, and its management when complicated by low grade dysplasia (LGD) is controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with LGD.

Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched for studies including patients with BE-associated LGD receiving RFA (January 1990 to May 2017).

The enantioselective Cu-catalyzed 1,6-boration of (E,E)-α,β,γ,δ-unsaturated ketones is described, which gives homoallylic boronates with high enantiomeric purity and unexpectedly high Z-selectivity. By changing the solvent, the outcome can be altered to give E-allylic boronates.

A series of highly substituted tetrahydrofurans (THFs), decorated with modifiable 2-aryl, 3-carboxy and 4-amino substituents, has been prepared for biological evaluation within the European Lead Factory. Diastereoselective reductive amination of pre-functionalised 4-oxofurans, readily prepared from cinnamate esters via oxa-Michael/Dieckmann annulation, provided the requisite THF cores on gram scale with three contiguous stereocentres, including full substitution at C-3. In a second series, a pyrrolidine ring was fused to the same oxofuran scaffold via an intramolecular reductive amination, inverting the configuration at C-4 relative to the other ring substituents.

Controlled assembly of two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) has been demonstrated through a binary strategy in which 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)pyridyl)naphthalene (), generated by oxidative dehydrogenation of 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)dihydropyridyl)naphthalene (), is coupled in a 1:1 ratio with terphenyl-3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxylic acid (; to form ), 5,5'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)diisophthalic acid (; to form ), or 5,5'-bis-(azanediyl)-oxalyl-diisophthalic acid (; to form ). Complementary O-H···N hydrogen bonds assemble 2D 6- (honeycomb) subunits that pack as layers in to give a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular network with parallel channels hosting guest DMF (DMF = ,'-dimethylformamide) molecules. and feature supramolecular networks of 2D → 3D inclined polycatenation of similar layers as those in .

1,2-Diazetidin-3-ones are readily accessible, small ring scaffolds that upon functionalization have the potential to produce diverse 3-dimensional structures for drug discovery. Thus, treatment of diazo hydrazides, obtained from simple hydrazides and malonyl half ester derivatives, followed by diazo transfer, with catalytic amounts of rhodium(II) acetate dimer results in intramolecular carbenoid N-H insertion to give 1,2-diazetidin-3-ones. Although subsequent functionalization reactions could be hampered by the lability of the 4-membered ring, a wide range of new derivatives was available by deprotection at N-1, and subsequent amide or urea formation.

Background: Colonic interposition is a second-line option after oesophagectomy when a gastric neo-oesophagus is not viable. There is no consensus on the optimum anatomical colonic conduit (right or left), or route of placement (posterior mediastinal, retrosternal or subcutaneous). The aim of this review was to determine the optimum site and route of neo-oesophageal conduit after adult oesophagectomy.

Monoclonal antibodies of the IgG2 and IgG4 isotype were found to exhibit an increased propensity for displaying two-peak elution profiles during cation exchange chromatography. In some cases, this two-peak elution profile also resulted in the formation of non-reversible mAb aggregates. Comparison of IgG1, IgG2, and IgG4 molecules with the same variable region reveals that the two-peak behaviour is predominantly mediated by the constant region and most likely the lower CH1, hinge and upper CH2 regions of the mAb.
