AbstractSexual dimorphism typically arises as a result of sexual selection or sex-specific natural selection. Species that exhibit cryptic coloration provide an excellent system for studying sex-specific selection for sexual dichromatism. In this study, we examined the sexually dichromatic use of chromatophores in the seawhip shrimp, (Borradaile, 1920), which commonly resides on colonies of (Lamarck, 1815), a gorgonian octocoral that occurs in multiple color morphs.

Microsatellite instability high (MSI-H) and mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) tumor status have been demonstrated to predict patient response to immunotherapies. We developed and validated a next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based companion diagnostic (CDx) to detect MSI-H solid tumors via a comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP) assay, FoundationOne®CDx (F1CDx). To determine MSI status, F1CDx calculates the fraction of unstable microsatellite loci across >2000 loci using a fraction-based (FB) analysis.

In 1983 to 1984, a mass mortality event caused a Caribbean-wide, >95% population reduction of the echinoid grazer, . This led to blooms of algae contributing to the devastation of scleractinian coral populations. Since then, exhibited only limited and patchy population recovery in shallow water, and in 2022 was struck by a second mass mortality reported over many reef localities in the Caribbean.

The degree to which individuals inbreed is a fundamental aspect of population biology shaped by both passive and active processes. Yet, the relative influences of random and non-random mating on the overall magnitude of inbreeding are not well characterized for many taxa. Background: More efficient screening methods are needed to improve the ability to identify and follow genetic cohorts in Parkinson's disease (PD).

Objective: To explore the use of the electronic medical records (EMRs) to identify participants with PD.

Methods: Using an algorithm previously developed in collaboration with Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS), approximately 5,200 participants with PD were identified, more than 3,200 were screened, and 837 participants were enrolled and genotyped for leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) and beta-glucocerebrosidase (GBA) variants.

Pembrolizumab is approved for treating patients with unresectable or metastatic solid tumors with high tumor mutational burden (TMB), as assessed by the Food and Drug Administration-approved companion diagnostic FoundationOneCDx, after progression on prior treatment. To expand TMB assessment for enriching response to pembrolizumab, TMB measurement from TruSight Oncology 500 (TSO500) was evaluated in archival pan-tumor samples from 294 patients enrolled in eight pembrolizumab monotherapy studies. TSO500 is a panel-based next-generation sequencing assay with broad availability, quick turnaround time, and a standardized bioinformatics pipeline.

Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) is a form of one-trial learning dependent on basolateral amygdala projection neurons (BLApn). Its underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Inbreeding is a potent evolutionary force shaping the distribution of genetic variation within and among populations of plants and animals. Yet, our understanding of the forces shaping the expression and evolution of nonrandom mating in general, and inbreeding in particular, remains remarkably incomplete. Most research on plant mating systems focuses on self-fertilization and its consequences for automatic selection, inbreeding depression, purging, and reproductive assurance, whereas studies of animal mating systems have often assumed that inbreeding is rare, and that natural selection favors traits that promote outbreeding.

Background: Letermovir (LET), a cytomegalovirus (CMV) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) terminase inhibitor, was recently approved for prophylaxis of CMV infection in adult CMV-seropositive recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Cytomegalovirus genotyping was performed to identify LET-resistance-associated variants (RAVs) among subjects in a Phase 3 trial.

Electrophysiological analysis has revealed much about the broad coding and neural ensemble dynamics that characterize gustatory cortical (GC) taste processing in awake rats and about how these dynamics relate to behavior. With regard to mice, however, data concerning cortical taste coding have largely been restricted to imaging, a technique that reveals average levels of neural responsiveness but that (currently) lacks the temporal sensitivity necessary for evaluation of fast response dynamics; furthermore, the few extant studies have thus far failed to provide consensus on basic features of coding. We have recorded the spiking activity of ensembles of GC neurons while presenting representatives of the basic taste modalities (sweet, salty, sour, and bitter) to awake mice.

The generation of reproductive incompatibility between groups requires a rare genotype with low compatibility to increase in frequency. We tested the hypothesis that sexual conflict driven by the risk of polyspermy can generate compatibility groups in gamete recognition proteins (GRPs) in the sea urchin Mesocentrotus franciscanus. We examined variation in the sperm (bindin) and egg (EBR1) GRPs, how this variation influences fertilization success and how allele frequencies shift in these GRPs over time.

Although the benefits to males mating with multiple females have been well documented, the benefits to females mating with multiple males (polyandry) are less studied, particularly the mechanism that might drive these potential benefits. Benefits of polyandry might stem from increasing the chance of mating with a high-quality or compatible male or stem from the ability of multiple males to fertilize more eggs than any single male. We examine the fertilization consequences of polyandry in the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus.
