Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic reduced colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, but the rebound in testing and outcomes following the pandemic has not been widely reported. We evaluated CRC test utilization and colorectal neoplasia detection among screening eligible patients in a large health system in 2020 and 2021, compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic).

Methods: Using a retrospective cohort study design, fecal immunochemical test (FIT) and colonoscopy utilization, FIT positivity, and neoplasia detection were evaluated annually in 2019-2021 among Kaiser Permanente Northern California patients aged 50-75 years overall and by sex, age, race and ethnicity, and spoken language preference.

Nano-patterned magnetic materials have opened new venues for the investigation of strongly correlated phenomena including artificial spin-ice systems, geometric frustration, and magnetic monopoles, for technologically important applications such as reconfigurable ferromagnetism. With the advent of atomically thin 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnets, a pertinent question is whether such compounds could make their way into this realm where interactions can be tailored so that unconventional states of matter can be assessed. Here, it is shown that square islands of CrGeTe vdW ferromagnets distributed in a grid manifest antiferromagnetic correlations, essential to enable frustration resulting in an artificial spin-ice.

This study systematically separated the effects of body size and sexualisation in social media images on women's body image. Young women (18-25 years, N = 194) viewed 10 social media images of either (1) sexualised women in larger bodies; (2) non-sexualised women in larger bodies; (3) sexualised women in smaller bodies; or (4) non-sexualised women in smaller bodies. Caspase-1 and related proteases are key players in inflammation and innate immunity. Here, we characterize the evolutionary history of caspase-1 and its close relatives across 19 primates and 21 rodents, focusing on differences that may cause discrepancies between humans and animal studies. While caspase-1 has been retained in all these taxa, other members of the caspase-1 subfamily (caspase-4, -5, -11, -12, and CARD16, 17, and 18) each have unique evolutionary trajectories.

Background And Aims: Demand for surveillance colonoscopy can sometimes exceed capacity, such as during and following the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, yet no tools exist to prioritize the patients most likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) among those awaiting surveillance colonoscopy. We developed a multivariable prediction model for CRC at surveillance comparing performance to a model that assigned patients as low or high risk based solely on polyp characteristics (guideline-based model).

Importance: In the US, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been the most rapidly increasing cancer since 1980, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is expected to soon become the leading cause of HCC.

Objective: To develop a prediction model for HCC incidence in a cohort of patients with MASLD.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This prognostic study was conducted among patients aged at least 18 years with MASLD, identified using diagnosis of MASLD using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) or International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) diagnosis codes; natural language processing of radiology imaging report text, which identified patients who had imaging evidence of MASLD but had not been formally diagnosed; or the Dallas Steatosis Index, a risk equation that identifies individuals likely to have MASLD with good precision.

Between late 2023 and early 2024, two measles outbreaks occurred in Israel, each caused by importation of measles virus strains of respective B3 and D8 genotypes. In this study, we validate transmission pathways uncovered by epidemiological investigations using a rapid molecular approach, based on complete measles virus genomes. The presented findings support this rapid molecular approach in complementing conventional contact tracing and highlight its potential for informing public health interventions.
