Despite the well-known effects of sexual selection on phenotypes, links between this evolutionary process and reproductive isolation, genomic divergence, and speciation have been difficult to establish. We unravel the genetic basis of sexually selected plumage traits to investigate their effects on reproductive isolation in barn swallows. The genetic architecture of sexual traits is characterized by 12 loci on two autosomes and the Z chromosome.

The ability to communicate with conspecifics is an adaptive behavior important for survival and reproduction, particularly in lineages that evolved enlarged brains and complex social behavior. In humans, language is supported by a robust, left-lateralized white matter fiber tract called the arcuate fasciculus, which links Broca's and Wernicke's areas, the core neocortical language regions located in the frontal and temporal lobes, respectively. This tract is also present in chimpanzees, less substantial than in humans and either weakly leftwardly-asymmetric or not asymmetric.

Unlike human intestines, which are long, hollow tubes, the intestines of sharks and rays contain interior helical structures surrounding a cylindrical hole. One function of these structures may be to create asymmetric flow, favoring passage of fluid down the digestive tract, from anterior to posterior. Vegetation and soils are taking up approximately 30% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions because of small imbalances in large gross carbon exchanges from productivity and turnover that are poorly constrained. We combined a new budget of radiocarbon produced by nuclear bomb testing in the 1960s with model simulations to evaluate carbon cycling in terrestrial vegetation. We found that most state-of-the-art vegetation models used in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project underestimated the radiocarbon accumulation in vegetation biomass.

Background: A screening tool sensitive to Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk factors, such as amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition, and subtle cognitive changes, best elicited by complex everyday tasks, is needed.

Objective: To determine if grocery shopping performance could differentiate older adults at elevated risk of developing AD (OAer), older adults at low risk of developing AD (OAlr), and young adults (YA), and if amount of Aβ deposition could predict grocery shopping performance in older adults (OA).

Methods: Twenty-one OAer (78±5 years), 33 OAlr (78±5 years), and 28 YA (31±3 years) performed four grocery shopping trials, with the best and worst performances analyzed.

Bifurcations in dynamical systems are often studied experimentally and numerically using a slow parameter sweep. Focusing on the cases of period-doubling and pitchfork bifurcations in maps, we show that the adiabatic approximation always breaks down sufficiently close to the bifurcation, so the upsweep and downsweep dynamics diverge from one another, disobeying standard bifurcation theory. Nevertheless, we demonstrate universal upsweep and downsweep trajectories for sufficiently slow sweep rates, revealing that the slow trajectories depend essentially on a structural asymmetry parameter, whose effect is negligible for the stationary dynamics.

PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL were searched for English-published articles since 2013 on key search terms related to infertility, assisted reproductive technologies, and psychological terms such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and quality of life. Background: Capturing a measure of movement quality during a complex walking task may indicate the earliest signs of detrimental changes to the brain due to beta amyloid (Aβ) deposition and be a potential differentiator of older adults at elevated and low risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. This study aimed to determine: 1) age-related differences in gait speed, stride length, and gait smoothness while transitioning from an even to an uneven walking surface, by comparing young adults (YA) and older adults (OA), and 2) if gait speed, stride length, and gait smoothness in OA while transitioning from an even to an uneven walking surface is influenced by the amount of Aβ deposition present in an OA's brain.

The direct way to estimate the regional fossil fuel CO surplus (ΔffCO) at a station is by measuring the ΔCO depletion compared with a respective background. However, this approach has several challenges, which are (i) the choice of an appropriate ΔCO background, (ii) potential contaminations through nuclear CO emissions and (iii) masking of ΔffCO by C-enriched biosphere respiration. We present a methodology for a high-throughput screening (HTS) of transcription factor libraries, based on bacterial cells and GFP fluorescence. The method is demonstrated on the LysR-type transcriptional regulator YhaJ, a key element in 2,4-dinitrotuluene (DNT) detection by bacterial explosives' sensor strains. Enhancing the performance characteristics of the YhaJ transcription factor is essential for future standoff detection of buried landmines.

Morphological transformations in emulsions of cellulose and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ternary copolymers containing acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, and methylsulfonate comonomers in -methylmorpholine--oxide were studied over the entire range of concentrations depending on temperature and intensity of the deformation action. Based on the morphological and rheological features of the system, the temperature-concentration range of spinnability of mixed solutions was determined, and composite fibers were spun. The fibers are characterized by a heterogeneous fibrillar texture.

Measuring local polar ordering is key to understanding ferroelectricity in thin films, especially for systems with small domains or significant disorder. Scanning nanobeam electron diffraction (NBED) provides an effective local probe of lattice parameters, local fields, polarization directions, and charge densities, which can be analyzed using a relatively low beam dose over large fields of view. This study presents preparing and characterization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers containing various content of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) incorporated via mutual spinning solution or emulsion using wet and mechanotropic spinning methods. It was shown that the presence of TEOS in dopes does not affect their rheological properties. The effect of the stereoregularity of poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) [PTMSP] (-content from 50 to 90%) on physical aging was investigated by measurement of the gas permeability. Films from pure PTMSP as well as those with the addition of the antioxidant Irganox 1076 were exposed to the air. The permeability of pure PTMSP films increases with an increase in -stereoregularity and correlates with an increase in interchain distances (according to X-ray analysis).
