Prominent theories of reading development have separately emphasized the relevance of children's skill in learning (Share, 2008) and lexical representations (Perfetti & Hart, 2002). Integrating these ideas, we examined whether skill in learning lexical representations is a mechanism that might explain children's reading development. To do so we conducted a longitudinal study, following 139 children from Grades 3 to 5.

Objective: Transplacental passage of maternal anti-SSA and anti-SSB antibodies, potentially associated with maternal autoimmune diseases, can cause neonatal lupus syndrome. Given the paucity of data in this setting, we report short- and long-term outcomes of mothers of offspring with congenital heart block (CHB).

Methods: This retrospective study included anti-SSA/SSB antibody-positive mothers of fetuses with high-degree CHB and focused on their health status before pregnancy, at CHB diagnosis, and thereafter.

Most patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are diagnosed at a late stage and have few therapeutic options and a poor prognosis. This is due to the lack of clearly defined underlying mechanisms or a dominant oncogene that can be targeted pharmacologically, unlike in other cancer types. Here, we report the identification of a previously uncharacterized oncogenic signaling pathway in HCC that is mediated by the tyrosine kinase Yes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of virtual care with remote automated monitoring (RAM) versus standard care in increasing the number of days adults were able to stay at home after non-elective surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Conducted as a multicenter randomized controlled trial in eight Canadian hospitals, 905 adults were divided into two groups: one receiving virtual care with daily monitoring and the other receiving standard post-operative care.
  • The results showed a slight advantage for the virtual care group in terms of days alive at home (29.7 vs. 29.5 days), but the difference was minimal and not statistically significant, indicating no major benefit from the virtual care approach.

Background Continual improvements to health systems, products, and services are necessary for improvements in health. However, many of these improvements are not incorporated into everyday practice. When designing new health systems, products, and services, involving members of the healthcare community and the public with personal healthcare experience can help to make sure that improvements will be useful and relevant to others like them.

Rationale: The end of life (EOL) experience in the intensive care unit (ICU) can be psychologically distressing for patients, families, and clinicians. The 3 Wishes Project (3WP) personalizes the EOL experience by carrying out wishes for dying patients and their families. While the 3WP has been integrated in academic, tertiary care ICUs, implementing this project in a community ICU has yet to be described.

Interleukin-17 receptor D (IL-17RD), also known as similar expression to Fgf genes (SEF), is proposed to act as a signaling hub that negatively regulates mitogenic signaling pathways, like the ERK1/2 MAP kinase pathway, and innate immune signaling. The expression of IL-17RD is downregulated in certain solid tumors, which has led to the hypothesis that it may exert tumor suppressor functions. However, the role of IL-17RD in tumor biology remains to be studied in vivo.

Spinal stiffness and mobility assessments vary between clinical and research settings, potentially hindering the understanding and treatment of low back pain. A total of 71 healthy participants were evaluated using 2 clinical assessments (posteroanterior spring and passive intervertebral motion) and 2 quantitative measures: lumped mechanical stiffness of the lumbar spine and local tissue stiffness (lumbar erector spinae and supraspinous ligament) measured via myotonometry. The authors hypothesized that clinical, mechanical, and local tissue measures would be correlated, that clinical tests would not alter mechanical stiffness, and that males would demonstrate greater lumbar stiffness than females.

Metabolic rate and life-history traits vary widely both among and within species, reflecting trade-offs in energy allocation, but the proximate and ultimate causes of variation are not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that these trade-offs are mediated by environmental heterogeneity, using isogenic strains of the amphibious fish that vary in the amount of time each can survive out of water. Consistent with pace of life theory, the strain that survived air exposure the longest generally exhibited a 'slow' phenotype, including the lowest metabolic rate, largest scope for metabolic depression, slowest consumption of energy stores and least investment in reproduction under standard conditions.

In around 1% of exposed pregnancies, anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB antibodies lead to congenital heart block, the main feature of neonatal lupus syndrome. As such, echocardiographic screening to detect congenital heart block, done every other week from 16 weeks to at least 24 weeks gestation, is widely recommended for anti-SSA-positive pregnant women. Such screening is now routinely done in many centres worldwide.

Background: The determinants of type 2 diabetes (T2D) remission and/or relapse after gastric bypass (RYGB) remain fully unknown. This study characterized β- and α-cell function, in cretin hormone release and insulin sensitivity in individuals with (remitters) or without (non-remitters) diabetes remission after RYGB.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of two distinct cohorts of individuals with or without diabetes remission at least 2 years after RYGB.

Environmental stressors, such as warm temperatures and hypoxia, can interact and pose a threat to aquatic species. Cross talk between the hypoxia and heat stress cellular pathways can lead to enhanced cross tolerance between these environmental stressors. In this study, we questioned whether elevated temperatures (from 27° to 32°C) during rearing would enhance the hypoxia-inducible transcription factor-1 (HIF-1)-mediated transcriptional response to hypoxia (5% dissolved O) in early stages of zebrafish development and whether these differences would be associated with enhanced larval tolerance and survival to hypoxia.

The physiological functions of the atypical mitogen-activated protein kinase extracellular signal-regulated kinase 3 (ERK3) remain poorly characterized. Previous analysis of mice with a targeted insertion of the reporter in the locus ( ) showed that inactivation of ERK3 in mice leads to perinatal lethality associated with intrauterine growth restriction, defective lung maturation, and neuromuscular anomalies. To further explore the role of ERK3 in physiology and disease, we generated novel mouse models expressing a catalytically inactive ( ) or conditional ( ) allele of ERK3.

: Mechanical diagnosis and therapy (MDT) is a specific classification-based musculoskeletal examination and intervention system that uses repeated end range and sustained movement to classify patients into mechanical syndromes. Research has recently demonstrated increased prevalence, reliability, and efficacy of MDT syndromes in varied peripheral musculoskeletal populations. There is currently no research analyzing if predictive variables exist for establishing directional preference in peripheral joints, other than the wrist.

Objective: Fetal exposure to maternal anti-SSA/Ro antibodies is necessary but not sufficient for the development of autoimmune congenital heart block (CHB), suggesting that other factors, such as fetal genetic predisposition, are important. Given the previously described association between major histocompatibility complex alleles and CHB risk, we undertook the present study to test the hypothesis that a variant form of HLA-C Asn80Lys, which binds with high affinity to an inhibitory killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and thus renders natural killer (NK) cells incapable of restricting inflammation, contributes to the development of CHB.

Methods: Members of 192 pedigrees in the US and Europe (194 cases of CHB, 91 unaffected siblings, 152 fathers, 167 mothers) and 1,073 out-of-study controls were genotyped on the Immunochip single-nucleotide polymorphism microarray.

The relation between morphological awareness-defined as the awareness of and ability to manipulate the smallest units of meaning in language-and reading comprehension remains in need of specification. In this study, we evaluated four potential intervening variables through which morphological awareness may contribute indirectly to reading comprehension. We assessed word reading and vocabulary as well as children's ability to read and analyze the meaning of morphologically complex words (morphological decoding and morphological analysis, respectively).
