Complete tendon Achilles rupture following injection of Aethoxysklerol (polidocanol) for the treatment of chronic Achilles tendinopathy.

Achilles tendinopathy can be a chronic disabling condition affecting both athletic and sedentary patients. Multiple new treatment approaches have developed, including shock wave therapy and various types of injection. One of the novel treatment methods used is the injection of Aethoxysklerol or polidocanol, a sclerosing substance injected under ultrasound guidance targeting areas of neovascularisation.

Obtaining local bone graft for Evans calcaneal osteotomy in pes planovalgus deformity correction.

Lateral column lengthening osteotomy is very useful surgical technique in treating stage II of pes planovalgus deformity of the foot. Either autograft from the iliac crest or allograft can be used for this purpose. In our technique we describe a novel method of obtaining bone graft locally from the calcaneus and therefore avoiding complications and morbidity associated with iliac crest graft.

Use of Smart Toe(©) implant for small toe arthrodesis: A smart concept?

Background: Arthrodesis of small joints for hammer and claw toe deformities is a common forefoot operative procedure. Our objective was to review patients who underwent small toe arthrodesis with Smart Toe(©) intramedullary monobloc implant. Our aim was to assess patient's surgical outcome and to ascertain implant suitability.

Long-term functional outcome of bilateral spontaneous and simultaneous Achilles tendon ruptures.

Bilateral simultaneous ruptures are rare comprising less than 1% of all Achilles tendon ruptures. Risk factors for bilateral ruptures include chronic diseases and medications such as corticosteroids and fluoroquinolones. There is little in the literature on the long-term functional outcome of bilateral Achilles tendon ruptures.

Popliteal angle as an indicator for successful closed reduction of developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Purpose: To evaluate the use of the popliteal angle as an indicator for successful closed reduction of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in children with delayed presentation.

Methods: 29 patients aged 6 to 18 months underwent successful closed reduction for unilateral DDH under general anaesthesia. Using a graduated goniometer, the popliteal angle was measured with the hip abducted within the safe zone (to avoid redislocation and injury to the femoral capital epiphysis) before and after reduction and after 6 weeks of spica casting.

Pseudoaneurysm of the dorsalis pedis artery after ankle arthroscopy.

Arthroscopic ankle synovectomy is believed to be associated with few complications. Vascular complications are rare, and we describe a case of iatrogenic pseudoaneursym formation of the dorsalis pedis artery (DPA) after ankle arthroscopy, using standard anteromedial and anterolateral ports, which has not been, we believe, previously reported in the literature. This rare complication required surgical exploration and ligation, and the patient had an uneventful recovery.

Use of the modified Stainsby procedure in correcting severe claw toe deformity in the rheumatoid foot: a retrospective review.

Introduction: In claw toe deformity, the plantar plate of the metarsophalangeal joint becomes displaced onto the dorsal aspect of the metatarsal head. The Stainsby procedure replaces the displaced plantar plate to its correct position beneath the metatarsal head.

Objective: In this study we assess the efficacy of a modified Stainsby procedure for the treatment of claw toe deformity.

Dorgan's lateral cross-wiring of supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children: A retrospective review.

Introduction: The currently accepted treatment for displaced supracondylar humeral fractures in children is closed reduction and fixation with percutaneous Kirschner wires. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively review a novel cross-wiring technique where the cross-wire configuration is achieved solely from the lateral side, thereby reducing the risk of ulnar nerve injury.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all children who had undergone this procedure at our centre over a 10-year period.

"Dorgan's" percutaneous lateral cross-wiring of supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children.

The preferred treatment of displaced supracondylar humeral fractures in children is closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. Cross-wiring techniques are biomechanically superior to parallel lateral wiring techniques. The purpose of this study was to review the authors' experience with a novel cross-wiring technique performed entirely from the lateral side.
