Current literature fails to examine gender differences of authors presenting abstracts at national plastic surgery meetings. This study aims to assess the ratio of female to male abstract presentations at Plastic Surgery The Meeting (PSTM).The gender of all abstract presenters from PSTM between 2010 and 2020 was recorded.

Management of Maxillofacial Trauma in Pregnant Women.

Introduction: Trauma during pregnancy deserves special attention as management must be directed towards both the mother and the fetus. Management of maxillofacial fractures in pregnancy can adversely affect the well-being of the fetus by impinging on normal functions such as respiration, mastication, and nutrition. Pregnancy complicates the management of facial injury due to the maintenance of the patent airway, anesthesia considerations, and imaging restraints.

Prepectoral Direct-to-Implant versus Staged Tissue Expander Breast Reconstruction: A Comparison of Complications.

Background: Direct-to-implant (DTI) reconstruction has multiple advantages over a staged tissue expander (TE) approach. However, its use may be limited by concerns of increased complications. This study is the largest series to date comparing postoperative outcomes for DTI versus TE reconstruction in the prepectoral plane.

Pronator Quadratus Muscle Flap for Prevention of Flexor Tendon Rupture after Distal Radius Volar Plating.

Background: Flexor tendon rupture is a serious but rare complication that can occur after volar plating of distal radius fractures. This study aims to introduce a novel surgical technique that uses a pronator quadratus (PQ) muscle flap transposition to protect the flexor tendons from rupture or irritation and evaluate its outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 204 patients with unstable distal radius fractures who underwent a standard volar flexor carpi radialis approach with extended release of the PQ muscle during exposure.

A multiplexed, paired-pooled droplet digital PCR assay for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva.

In response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we developed a multiplexed, paired-pool droplet digital PCR (MP4) screening assay. Key features of our assay are the use of minimally processed saliva, 8-sample paired pools, and reverse-transcription droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR) targeting the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid gene. The limit of detection was determined to be 2 and 12 copies per µl for individual and pooled samples, respectively.

Rhythmic training, literacy, and graphomotor skills in kindergarteners.

Introduction: The aim of this manuscript is twofold: first, to investigate the relationship between rhythmic, phonological and graphomotor skills in kindergarten children; and second, to evaluate the possible impact of rhythmic training on the two other skills.

Methods: To that end, we selected a sample of 78 children in Québec. Forty-two children received rhythmic training (experimental group) and 34 arts training (active control group) during the same period (10 weeks).

Trends in Female Representation at Plastic Surgery Meetings: A Move Toward Gender Equity at the Podium.

Anecdotally, female plastic surgeons are disproportionately underrepresented as speakers, moderators, and panelists at national and regional plastic surgery meetings. No studies have attempted to quantify female representation at Plastic Surgery The Meeting (PSTM). The objective of our study is to examine trends in female participation at PSTM.

Dufourmentel Flap for Scalp Reconstruction.

Transposition flaps are useful for reconstruction of many skin defects. Limberg described a rhomboid rotation flap in 1946. Dufourmentel described an improved version of the Limberg flap in 1962.

Perichondrial Arthroplasty Revisited: Technical Pearls.

Articular cartilage damage has been a longstanding challenge in hand surgery. Because of its limited ability to heal on its own and its predictable impact on bone resulting in degenerative osteoarthritis, surgical intervention is often mandated, through arthrodesis or implant arthroplasty. In this article, we revisit the perichondrial arthroplasty, a two-stage joint resurfacing technique using autologous rib perichondrium.

Stalled at the intersection: insurance status and disparities in post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

Purpose: Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction (PMBR) is an important component of breast cancer treatment, but disparities relative to insurance status persist despite legislation targeting the issue. We aimed to study this relationship in a large health system combining a safety-net hospital and a private academic center.

Methods: Data were collected on all patients who underwent mastectomy for breast cancer from 2011 to 2019 in a private academic center and an adjacent public safety-net hospital served by the same surgical teams.

Joint Preserving Treatments for Thumb CMC Arthritis.

Trapezium resection with or without tendon suspension arthroplasty has been considered the gold standard surgical treatment for thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis (CMCJ OA). However, the removal of the trapezium may result in subsidence or shortening of the first metacarpal axis. Resection may also lead to reduced pinch strength and thumb instability.

Tissue-specific biochemical differences between chronic wasting disease prions isolated from free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an invariably fatal prion disease affecting cervid species worldwide. Prions can manifest as distinct strains that can influence disease pathology and transmission. CWD is profoundly lymphotropic, and most infected cervids likely shed peripheral prions replicated in lymphoid organs.

Persistent and interdependent: Racial disparities and their mechanisms in postmastectomy breast reconstruction.

Background: Racial disparities in accessing postmastectomy breast reconstruction persist despite expansion of insurance coverage. An updated examination with a broad assessment of mediating factors in a "majority minority" community is needed.

Upper extremity necrotizing fasciitis in a Covid-19 patient.

The novel COVID-19 virus has resulted in an immense burden in healthcare throughout the world. In addition to respiratory complications, COVID-19 has been associated with hypercoagulability and ischemic changes. We report a case of a patient with COVID-19 who presented with a rapidly progressing necrotizing fasciitis treated in our institution.

Superficial lumbar muscle recruitment strategies to control the trunk with delayed-onset muscle soreness.

Purpose: The lumbar region offers various muscle recruitment strategies to achieve a task goal under varying conditions. For instance, trunk movement control can be reorganized under the influence of low back pain. How such task-modulation is obtained is not fully understood.

Factors associated with headache and neck pain among telecommuters - a five days follow-up.

Background: The current sanitary crisis brought on by the COVID-19 recently forced a large proportion of workers to adopt telecommuting with limited time to plan transition. Given that several work-related risk factors are associated with headache and neck pain, it seems important to determine those associated with headache and neck pain in telecommuters. The main objective of this study was to identify which telecommuting and individual associated factors are related with headache and neck pain occurrence in telecommuters over a five days follow-up.

Lower extremity postaxial polydactyly: Current literature status and future avenues.

Background: Despite lower extremity polydactyly (LEP) representing the most common congenital foot anomaly with functional and psychosocial implications, the literature is devoid of comprehensive, synthesizing reviews. The purpose of the current review is to identify an evidence-based approach to guide clinical management and shed light on reported functional and esthetic outcomes for postaxial polydactyly.

Methods: A scoping systematic review of primary clinical studies was performed.

Dorsal Hand Rejuvenation: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Background: Dorsal hand appearance undergoes changes with aging. Grading systems have been designed to provide numerical scores to dorsal hand appearance. Various modalities have been utilized to improve the aesthetic appearance and rejuvenate the dorsal hand.

Video games and their associations with physical health: a scoping review.

Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to investigate the possible links between the practice of video games and physical health. It seeks to answer the following question: What are the physical health consequences of playing video games in healthy video game player? and How is it currently investigated?.

Methods: A scoping review was conducted to identify observational and experimental studies pertaining to our research question.

Recurrent and persistent carpal tunnel syndrome: "Triple-therapy approach".

Background: Various procedures have been described for patients undergoing a revision carpal tunnel release. These can include repeat open decompression with external or internal neurolysis, tenosynovectomy, endoscopic release, various flap techniques, saphenous vein wrapping and use of prosthetic implants. This study reports a case series of 30 consecutive patients who underwent revision carpal tunnel release at single institution from 2012 to 2018.

V-Y Flap for Nasal Reconstruction.

The nasal tip is a complex zone for reconstruction. Numerous flap reconstructions have been proposed. In addition to the technique presented here, only the Gillies-Millard bishop's miter flap and the paramedian forehead flap should be considered.

Neisseria elongata osteomyelitis: Literature review and case report in a 63-year-old male presenting with progressive right-handed redness, swelling and pain.

Introduction: Neisseria elongata, a gram-negative rod, has been identified in 23 cases of pathogenesis in the literature, of which only 2 were osteomyelitis. Here we report the third known case of isolated N. elongata cultures in a digital osteomyelitis.

Short-term effect of delayed-onset muscle soreness on trunk proprioception during force reproduction tasks in a healthy adult population: a crossover study.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of lumbar muscle delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) on the ability of the trunk muscles to reproduce different levels of force.

Methods: Twenty healthy adults (10 males and 10 females) were recruited for this study. Force reproduction in trunk extension and flexion was assessed at 50 and 75% of participants' maximal isometric voluntary contraction in flexion and extension before and after a lumbar muscle DOMS protocol.
