Client experiences using a new supervised consumption service in Sudbury, Ontario: A qualitative study.

Overdoses are increasing in the province of Ontario, Canada, where northern communities such as Sudbury have witnessed disproportionately elevated rates, with opioid-related deaths double that of the provincial average. To address this issue, governments have implemented supervised consumption services (SCS) where people who use drugs (PWUD) can use their pre-obtained substances onsite under trained supervision. In September 2022, the city of Sudbury opened its first SCS, 'The Spot', but the site's sustainability is contingent on demonstrating benefit to PWUD and the neighboring community.

We examine requirements for a valid informed consent process for this approach and whether the need for informed consent for this treatment is always understood or applied by practitioners.

The signal to noise ratio and corresponding visibility of power cables as seen by military aircrafts is critical for crew safety. During low altitude operations, rotorcraft systems must be able to navigate these power lines during flight. Many of these military missions are flown at night which means the reflective bands including the visible, near infrared and short-wave infrared do not provide sufficient light.

Research priorities to improve the health of children and adults with dysphagia: a National Institute of Health Research and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists research priority setting partnership.

Objective: To conduct the first UK-wide research priority setting project informing researchers and funders of critical knowledge gaps requiring investigation to improve the health and well-being of patients with eating, drinking and swallowing disorders (dysphagia) and their carers.

Design: A priority setting partnership between the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists using a modified nominal group technique. A steering group and NIHR representatives oversaw four project phases: (1) survey gathering research suggestions, (2) verification and aggregation of suggestions with systematic review research recommendations, (3) multistakeholder workshop to develop research questions, (4) interim priority setting via an online ranking survey and (5) final priority setting.

Background: The overdose crisis has generated innovative harm reduction and drug market monitoring strategies. In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, a multi-site drug checking service (DCS) pilot project was launched in October 2019. The project provides people who use drugs with information on the chemical composition of their substances, thereby increasing their capacity to make more informed decisions about their drug use and avoid overdose.

The Emergence of the Village and the Transformation of Traditional Institutions: A Case Study from Northern Tanzania.

In this paper, we examine how the 2008-2009 drought in northern Tanzania contributed to and catalyzed the transformation of governance concerning the management of natural resources from traditional informal institutions among the Maasai to formal village-based institutions. Our central argument is that village governance in northern Tanzania represents a new, formal institution that is supplementing and in some important ways obviating traditional, informal institutions. Further, this replacement is central to what appears to be a transformation of the social-ecological system embracing the rangelands and pastoral/agropastoral people in northern Tanzania.

Life and Death Decision-Making by p53 and Implications for Cancer Immunotherapy.

The tumor-suppressor protein p53 is mutated in approximately half of all cancers, whereas the p53 signaling network is perturbed in almost all cancers. In response to different stress stimuli, p53 selectively activates genes to elicit a cell survival or cell death response. How p53 makes the decision between life and death remains a fascinating question and an exciting field of research.

Specifications Grading: What It Is, and Lessons Learned.

Traditional point-based grading is failing students entering a competency-based workforce: Employers require concrete skills and knowledge, not "high" grades. In the specifications approach, learning outcomes are explicitly linked to the grading system. The basic components of the approach include clear alignment of learning outcomes to certification standards, bundled sequences of assessments tied to basic and advanced competency/learning outcomes, pass/fail grading with no partial credit, opportunities to revise unacceptable work, and detailed expectations of performance on assessments.

With different forms of social gambling often found within (or in close proximity to) military bases around the world, understanding the extent of gambling activities and consequent harms occurring within military contexts warrants further attention. This review aims to identify, describe and thematically synthesise published literature on gambling harm and related issues among active duty military personnel.

Histone deacetylase 11 inhibition promotes breast cancer metastasis from lymph nodes.

Lymph node (LN) metastases correspond with a worse prognosis in nearly all cancers, yet the occurrence of cancer spreading from LNs remains controversial. Additionally, the mechanisms explaining how cancers survive and exit LNs are largely unknown. Here, we show that breast cancer patients frequently have LN metastases that closely resemble distant metastases.

Understanding how p53 activates certain gene programs and not others is critical. Here, we identify low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1), a transmembrane endocytic receptor, as a p53 target gene. We show that, although LRP1 transcript expression is upregulated in response to both sub-lethal and lethal doses of p53-activating stress, LRP1 protein is only upregulated in response to sub-lethal stress.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and lung squamous carcinomas (LUSC) represent about 30% of cases.
