[Hypertensive crisis in a 3-year-old boy - neurovascular conflict?].

Unlabelled: Hypertensive crisis is a sudden rise in blood pressure with accompanying clinical symptoms. The disease is extremely rare in small children and is always a complication of secondary hypertension.

ATP6AP1-CDG: Follow-up and female phenotype.

In 2016, 11 male patients were reported with immunodeficiency and hepatic, gastric and (in some) neurological disease due to X-linked ATP6AP1 deficiency (ATP6AP1-CDG). In 2018, three other patients were reported with additional features: connective tissue abnormalities, sensorineural hearing loss, hyperopia, glomerular and tubular dysfunction, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and altered amino acid and lipid metabolism. We here present a follow-up of three reported siblings showing progression of deafness to total hearing loss, progressive loss of hair up to alopecia, chestnut skin and, at last follow-up, in some of them proteinuria.

INVESTIGATION OF SECONDARY MIXED RADIATION FIELD AROUND A MEDICAL LINEAR ACCELERATOR.

The aim of this study is to investigate secondary mixed radiation field around linac, as the first part of an overall assessment of out-of-field contribution of neutron dose for new advanced radiation dose delivery techniques. All measurements were performed around Varian Clinic 2300 C/D accelerator at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial, Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, Krakow Branch. Recombination chambers REM-2 and GW2 were used for recombination index of radiation quality Q4 determination (as an estimate of quality factor Q), measurement of total tissue dose Dt and calculation of gamma and neutron components to Dt.

The role of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography in patients with suspected recurrence or metastatic differentiated thyroid carcinoma with elevated serum thyroglobulin and negative I-131 whole body scan.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT in the detection of recurrence or distant metastasis in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) with elevated serum thyroglobulin (Tg) and negative ¹³¹I whole-body scan.

Material And Methods: The study included 19 patients (13 female, 6 male, average age 64 years) with DTC after total thyroidectomy and ¹³¹I ablation therapy that had elevated stimulated Tg and negative whole-body radioiodine scan. In all patients, standard imaging methods showed no suspicious changes.

Development of an in vivo methylation system for the solventogen Clostridium saccharobutylicum NCP 262 and analysis of two endonuclease mutants.

The genome of the biotechnologically important solventogenic Clostridium saccharobutylicum NCP 262 contains two operons coding for genes of presumed type I RM systems belonging to the families A and C. They represent a limiting factor for the development of transformation and conjugation protocols. We established an efficient triparental mating system to transfer DNA to C.

Application of IMRT in adjuvant treatment of soft tissue sarcomas of the thigh-Preliminary results.

Background: Fracture of the femur is the most frequent late complication in patients with soft tissue sarcomas (STS) who receive external beam radiotherapy after limb-sparing surgery.

Aim: To reduce the risk of bone fracture following radiotherapy of STS of the thigh, we minimized the dose to the femur and to surrounding normal tissues by applying intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). We report preliminary results of post-surgery IMRT of the thigh in patients with STS in this extremity.

REPAIRtoire--a database of DNA repair pathways.

REPAIRtoire is the first comprehensive database resource for systems biology of DNA damage and repair. The database collects and organizes the following types of information: (i) DNA damage linked to environmental mutagenic and cytotoxic agents, (ii) pathways comprising individual processes and enzymatic reactions involved in the removal of damage, (iii) proteins participating in DNA repair and (iv) diseases correlated with mutations in genes encoding DNA repair proteins. REPAIRtoire provides also links to publications and external databases.

Comparison between intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and 3D tangential beams technique used in patients with early-stage breast cancer who received breast-conserving therapy.

Background: The most often found complications in patients with breast cancer who received radiotherapy are cardiac and pulmonary function disorders and development of second malignancies.

Aim: To compare the intensity modulated radiotherapy with the 3D tangential beams technique in respect of dose distribution in target volume and critical organs they generate in patients with early-stage breast cancer who received breast-conserving therapy.

Materials And Methods: A dosimetric analysis was performed to assess the three radiotherapy techniques used in each of 10 consecutive patients with early-stage breast cancer treated with breast-conserving therapy.

[Choroidal metastases of malignancies. Review of treatment methods with special regard to application of radiotherapy].

Choroidal metastases are developed in 4 - 12% of patients with solid malignancies. Typical symptoms are loss of visual acuity or visual field, photophobia and floaters. In therapy of choroidal metastases are used following methods: surgery, laser photocoagulation, radiotherapy, and systemic treatment (anti-neoplastic chemotherapy or hormonotherapy).

A simple track structure model of ion beam radiotherapy.

A simple radiotherapy ion beam calculation based on the cellular track structure model, using in vitro cell survival parameters fitted from recent experimental data, is presented. The calculation represents a single-fraction ion exposure (roughly corresponding to a 2 Gy fraction of megavolt X rays) and exploits concepts used in clinical radiotherapy, such as entrance, or 'skin' ion dose. The depth distribution of cells surviving their irradiation by a beam of 385 MeV amu(-1) carbon ions is calculated over the range of the stopping ions, as a sequence of track-segments, in the continuous slowing-down approximation.

A TL-based anthropomorphic benchmark for verifying 3-D dose distributions from external electron beams calculated by radiotherapy treatment planning systems.

Validation of a radiotherapy treatment planning system using an anthropomorphic phantom and MTS-N thermoluminescent detectors.

A treatment planning system (TPS) was validated in conditions of simulated radiotherapy (RT) of an anthropomorphic tissue-equivalent phantom. Individually calibrated solid MTS-N (LiF:Mg,Ti) detectors were placed within the treatment volume in this phantom which was then repeatedly irradiated by external 60Co or 6 MV X ray beams. On the basis of TLD-measured depth-dose curves for the two beams, the relative accuracy of determining dose (of the order of 1 Gy) at live depths in a water phantom is about 0.

Kindergartners' responses to males in nontraditional roles: a replication of Styer (1975).

After listening to 2 stories, William's Doll and Ira Sleeps Over, 2 groups of kindergarten students (22 boys and 27 girls) were questioned about their attitudes toward the nontraditional male roles depicted. A comparison with a 1975 study by Styer suggests that both genders are more accepting of literature portraying boys in nontraditional ways.

Prediction of Saturne II+ 10 MV and 23 MV photon beam output factors.

A two-variable, three-parameter formula for modified, virtual equivalent square sides has been worked out which, when incorporated into empirical output-square field size function, generates output values of rectangular fields taking into account the asymmetry of the collimating system of the Saturne II+ accelerator generating 10 MV and 23 MV photon beams.

[Irradiation of patients with ovarian cancer applying the moving strip technique. Preliminary estimation of tolerance and efficacy].

Details of clinical and technical problems connected with the irradiation of a total abdominal cavity, applying the "moving strips" method are discussed. In connection with the analysis of clinical data concerning 10 patients, preliminary estimation of results indicates that the discussed technique is an efficacious and safe method of postoperative irradiation of patients with ovarian cancer.

[Solitary maxillary cysts (author's transl)].

Four cases of solitary maxillary cysts are reported, and our current knowledge of these rare lesions reviewed. Their diagnosis should be suspected whenever bone lacunae are detected, that are not the result of dental disorders. Surgical exploration demonstrates the presence of a cavity that is almost always unilocular, and contains blood-stained fluid, or is completely empty in some cases.

Paralytic poliomyelitis in Ontario: laboratory studies of two recent cases.

Sporadic cases of paralytic poliomyelitis are being reported with increasing frequency, particularly in unvaccinated persons, in several countries in which the disease had been absent for several years following adequate initial vaccination programmes. In Ontario, two paralytic cases occurred in unvaccinated children after several disease-free years. Detailed studies of the strains of poliovirus type 1 isolated from these patients showed that they were not vaccine strains.
