Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) and reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) are two construction waste products that are commonly used in the road construction industry. Besides many advantages, pollutants leaching from RCA and RAP are highlighted as the most concerning environmental issue. This study investigated metals leaching characteristics from RCA and RAP due to the variations in key influential factors of pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), compaction and liquid to solid ratio (L/S).

Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown aetiology (CKDu) is a major public health concern in dry climatic, agricultural regions of Sri Lanka. The chemistry of groundwater (the main source of drinking water) in the area has been studied extensively, in relation to the occurrence of CKDu. This paper investigates water quality studies published in CKDu affected areas of Sri Lanka and also presents a new data set of 27 hydrochemical and isotopic samples collected from groundwater wells in selected CKDu endemic areas in Sri Lanka.

Road dust contain potentially toxic pollutants originating from a range of anthropogenic sources common to urban land uses and soil inputs from surrounding areas. The research study analysed the mineralogy and morphology of dust samples from road surfaces from different land uses and background soil samples to characterise the relative source contributions to road dust. The road dust consist primarily of soil derived minerals (60%) with quartz averaging 40-50% and remainder being clay forming minerals of albite, microcline, chlorite and muscovite originating from surrounding soils.

Onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) are becoming increasingly important for the treatment and dispersal of effluent in new urbanised developments that are not serviced by centralised wastewater collection and treatment systems. However, the current standards and guidelines adopted by many local authorities for assessing suitable site and soil conditions for OWTS are increasingly coming under scrutiny due to the public health and environmental impacts caused by poorly performing systems, in particular septic tank-soil adsorption systems. In order to achieve sustainable onsite wastewater treatment with minimal impacts on the environment and public health, more appropriate means of assessment are required.
