We previously showed that CAP37 modulates corneal epithelial cell migration, adhesion, and proliferation, and that protein kinase C delta (PKCδ) mediates CAP37-induced chemotaxis of these cells. Methods: The new variant of water-soluble MUR (wsMUR-TM_v2) was engineered based on the murine MUR crystal structure. This novel variant was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified.
Background: Telomere length is a heritable trait, and short telomere length has been associated with multiple chronic diseases. We investigated the relationship of relative leukocyte telomere length with cardiometabolic risk and performed the first genome-wide association study and meta-analysis to identify variants influencing relative telomere length in a population of Sikhs from South Asia.
Methods And Results: Our results revealed a significant independent association of shorter relative telomere length with type 2 diabetes mellitus and heart disease.
We have developed a novel, all-electronic biosensor for opioids that consists of an engineered μ-opioid receptor protein, with high binding affinity for opioids, chemically bonded to a graphene field-effect transistor to read out ligand binding. A variant of the receptor protein that provided chemical recognition was computationally redesigned to enhance its solubility and stability in an aqueous environment. A shadow mask process was developed to fabricate arrays of hundreds of graphene transistors with average mobility of ∼1500 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and yield exceeding 98%.

Sera (86 total) from control individuals and patients with stage I nonsmall cell lung cancer or benign small pulmonary nodules were discriminated retrospectively by serum changes discerned by mass profiling. Control individuals were distinguished from patients with Stage I lung cancer or benign nodules with test sensitivities of 89% and 83%.

Materials And Methods: An in vitro fragmentation study was conducted using cuboid BegoStone phantoms, which mimic hard and soft stones, based on an established model. Three different stone sizes were used in the testing having volumes of 100, 256, and 320 mm(3).
Graphene-boron nitride monolayer heterostructures contain adjacent electrically active and insulating regions in a continuous, single-atom thick layer. To date structures were grown at low pressure, resulting in irregular shapes and edge direction, so studies of the graphene-boron nitride interface were restricted to the microscopy of nanodomains. Here we report templated growth of single crystalline hexagonal boron nitride directly from the oriented edge of hexagonal graphene flakes by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition, and physical property measurements that inform the design of in-plane hybrid electronics.

This new method is based on the transfer of nanosecond high voltage electric pulses to the stones through flexible probes of various sizes.
Methods: The study involved 879 patients aged 19-88 with renal, ureter and bladder calculi.
Objectives/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of vocal pathology among first-year acting students.
Study Design: A retrospective review of 30 first-year graduate-level drama students between 2009 and 2011 was performed.
Methods: Stroboscopy, Voice Handicap Index-10 questionnaires, and acoustic measures were analyzed.
Although the prognostic significance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been researched extensively in patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy, its role in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) requires further investigation. The present study evaluated the associations between VEGF level and relapse rate and early complications after HSCT. VEGF levels were analyzed in 91 consecutive patients before the start of conditioning, on day 0, on the day of engraftment, and on the day of diagnosis of veno-occlusive disease (VOD).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn this paper, we synthesize the current literature on group-based social skills interventions (GSSIs) for adolescents (ages 10-20 years) with higher-functioning autism spectrum disorder and identify key concepts that should be addressed in future research on GSSIs. We consider the research participants, the intervention, the assessment of the intervention, and the research methodology and results to be integral and interconnected components of the GSSI literature, and we review each of these components respectively. Participant characteristics (eg, age, IQ, sex) and intervention characteristics (eg, targeted social skills, teaching strategies, duration and intensity) vary considerably across GSSIs; future research should evaluate whether participant and intervention characteristics mediate/moderate intervention efficacy.

Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) is an important angiogenic marker over-expressed in gliomas. With the use of molecular magnetic resonance imaging (mMRI) differing levels of VEGFR2 can be characterized in vivo with in rodent gliomas varying in angiogenesis. VEGFR2 levels were assessed by intravenous administration of an anti-VEGFR2 probe (anti-VEGFR2-albumin-Gd (gadolinium)-DTPA (diethylene triamine penta acetic acid)-biotin) into C6 or RG2 glioma-bearing rats, and visualized with mMRI.

Despite intense efforts, efficient fabrication of highly nanoporous silicon by Mg still remains a significant challenge due to the exothermic reaction nature. By employing table salt (NaCl) as a heat scavenger for the magnesiothermic reduction, we demonstrate an effective route to convert diatom (SiO2) and SiO2/GeO2 into nanoporous Si and Si/Ge composite, respectively.
