Article Synopsis
  • In France, the transfusion policy for patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) involves giving red blood cells (RBC) matching the donor's Rh type, which poses a risk of allo-immunization to both donors and recipients.* -
  • A study spanning 8 years revealed a 7.1% incidence of Rh incompatibility in 1012 alloHSCT cases, with 10.3% of evaluable patients developing alloantibodies, but none targeted the mismatched Rh antigens.* -
  • Although no immune-mediated hemolytic anemia occurred as a result of allo-immunization, a significant association was found between anti-RBC allo-immunization and

Article Synopsis
  • The French health authorities established guidelines for "good transfusion practices," but there is limited guidance for managing transfusions in patients who have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem transplantation (allo-HCT).
  • A workshop aimed to standardize transfusion practices for this patient group where recommendations are lacking.
  • Key recommendations include conducting extended blood cell phenotyping before transplantation, monitoring antibody levels, and assessing chimerism at specific intervals post-transplant to adjust transfusion strategies as needed.

Patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) are susceptible to complement-mediated intravascular hemolysis and thrombosis. Factor H (FH) is the main regulator of the complement alternative pathway, which protects cells from unwanted complement-mediated damage. Although FH is not a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked molecule, it may play a role in PNH.

Article Synopsis
  • Most patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) require red blood cell (RBC) transfusions, and using RH-KEL1 antigen-matched (PAM) units is recommended to prevent allo-immunization.
  • In a study involving 90 patients, the approach allowed transfusion of non-PAM RBC in higher-risk MDS and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients without any development of allo-immunization among those with infrequent phenotypes.
  • This strategy successfully preserved 532 units of infrequent phenotype RBCs, enabling their redistribution to other patients, showing that it is a viable practice to manage transfusion policies effectively.

Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) following allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) with major ABO incompatibility is responsible for transfusion dependent anaemia, impaired quality of life and iron overload. We conducted a retrospective study, over a 10-year period, which included all consecutive patients who received a major ABO mismatched aHSCT, to assess the impact of specific treatment on PRCA. We did not observe any PRCA in the 57 aHSCT issued from cord blood.

We evaluated awareness of treatment as prevention (TasP) among adults people living with HIV (PLHIV) in five infectious disease departments in Paris, then how they perceived its impact on their sexual well-being. This cross-sectional multicenter survey was conducted in 2014 during scheduled clinical appointments using a self-administered questionnaire. We analyzed 520 questionnaires (42% women, 54% men of whom 57% were MSM [men who have sex with men]).

Pesticides are often found at high concentrations in small ponds near agricultural field where amphibians are used to live and reproduce. Even if there are many studies on the impacts of phytopharmaceutical active ingredients in amphibian toxicology, only a few are interested in the earlier steps of their life cycle. While their populations are highly threatened with extinction.

The main objective of the study was to assess the efficiency of phytoremediation methods implemented for 14 years on highly metal-contaminated soils. The different experimental strategies were plots planted with a tree mix or with a single tree species coupled or not with the use of fly-ashes as an amendment to limit metals mobility in soil. The breakdown of poplar litter on the four plots was monitored during 10 months.

Since amphibians are recognised as good models to assess the quality of environments, only few studies have dealt with the impacts of chemical contaminants on their gametes, while toxic effects at this stage will alter all the next steps of their life cycle. Therefore, we propose to investigate the oocyte maturation of Xenopus laevis in cadmium- and lead-contaminated conditions. The impacts of cadmium and lead ions were explored on events involved in the hormone-dependent process of maturation.

Among the toxicological and ecotoxicological studies, few have investigated the effects on germ cells, gametes or embryos, while an impact at these stages will result in serious damage at a population level. Thus, it appeared essential to characterize consequences of environmental contaminant exposures at these stages. Therefore, we proposed to assess the effects of exposure to cadmium and lead ions, alone or in a binary mixture, on early stages of Xenopus laevis life cycle.

The aim of this pilot study was to analyze the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) genotypes circulating in Senegal among Drug User (DUs), using Dried Blood Spots (DBS) as RNA source for molecular assays. Heroin and/or cocaine users (n = 506) were recruited in Dakar from April to July 2011, using a Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) method. DBS preparation consisted of five drops of whole blood from finger applied to a Whatman paper card.

Intravascular hemolysis in Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) can effectively be controlled with eculizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds complement protein C5. We report here a retrospective comparison study between 123 patients treated with eculizumab in the recent period (>2005) and 191 historical controls (from the French registry). Overall survival (OS) at 6 years was 92% (95%CI, 87 to 98) in the eculizumab cohort versus 80% (95%CI 70 to 91) in historical controls diagnosed after 1985 (HR 0.

Objectives: Data on the extent of drug use and associated HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B infection in West Africa are lacking. The objectives of ANRS12244 UDSEN study were to estimate the size of the heroin and/or cocaine drug user (DU) population living in the Dakar area (Senegal), and assess the prevalence and risk factors of HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV), including behavioural determinants in this population, in order to set up an integrated prevention and treatment programme for DUs.

Design And Methods: A capture-recapture method was applied for population size estimation, whereas the respondent-driven sampling (RDS) method was used to recruit a sample of DUs living in the Dakar area and determine HIV, HBV and HCV prevalence.

Highly metal contaminated soils found in the North of France are the result of intense industrial past. These soils are now unfit for the cultivation of agricultural products for human consumption. Solutions have to be found to improve the quality of these soils, and especially to reduce the availability of trace elements (TEs).

Climate change is having a discernible effect on many biological and ecological processes. Among observed changes, modifications in bird phenology have been widely documented. However, most studies have interpreted phenological shifts as gradual biological adjustments in response to the alteration of the thermal regime.
