The mouse chromosome 6 locus Cmv1 controls replication of mouse Cytomegalovirus (MCMV) in the spleen of the infected host. In our effort to clone Cmv1, we have constructed a high-resolution genetic linkage map in the proximity of the gene. For this, a total of 45 DNA markers corresponding to either cloned genes or microsatellites were mapped within a 7.

The serotonergic system has been linked to the etiology of several, albeit disparate, psychiatric disorders. The accumulation of many lines of evidence support the view that there are gender differences in the serotonergic system in humans. It is further proposed that a gender differentiated serotonergic system acts as the nidus for the development of gender-specific psychiatric disorders.

The mouse Nramp1 gene (Bcg/Ity/Lsh) controls innate defense to infection with intracellular parasites such as Mycobacterium, Salmonella, and Leishmania. Sequence analysis of Nramp1 predicts a hydrophobic, membrane-associated protein expressed exclusively in monocyte/macrophage lineages. A single G169D substitution within the fourth predicted transmembrane domain of Nramp1 is associated with susceptibility to infection (Bcg) in inbred mouse strains.

Fever is a common symptom in young infants. However, it is often difficult to differentiate young children with severe bacterial infections (SBI) from those with benign febrile illnesses. Clinical, biological and radiological criteria, alone or combined, do not allow to identify with precision young infants with SBI.

Excision of varicose veins through ministab incisions is currently the choice for the removal of varicose vein clusters. The crochet hook technique of stab avulsion phlebectomy is described in this paper. This surgical method for the treatment of varicose veins has been widely utilized in a residency training environment during the last twelve years and has been used by the senior author for more than 20 years.

Objective: To compare the anthropometric characteristics of children with and without HIV-1 infection.

Methods: In a prospective cohort study of 218 children born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers and 218 children born to HIV-1 seronegative mothers in Kigali, Rwanda, 3 groups were compared: infected children (n = 46); uninfected children born to seropositive mothers (n = 140); and uninfected children born to seronegative mothers (n = 207). Weight, height and head circumference were measured at birth, every 3 months during the first year of life and every 6 months thereafter.

Clinical features and mortality due to human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) infection in women are described as part of a prospective 4-year cohort study on perinatal transmission of HIV in Kigali, Rwanda. Two hundred fifteen HIV-seropositive (HIV+) and 216 HIV-seronegative (HIV-) pregnant women were enrolled at delivery between November 1988 and June 1989. Clinical information collected during systematic quarterly examinations was compared.

In P388/VCR-10 cells, resistance to cytotoxic drugs is caused by the overexpression of the mdr3 gene, in absence of gene amplification. The gene is transcriptionally activated following integration of a full-length mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) within intron I, upstream of the coding region of the gene. This integration results in the production of MMTV/mdr3 fusion transcripts that originate from the antisense 5'LTR of the provirus.

A candidate gene for the mouse chromosome 1 host resistance locus Bcg/Ity/Lsh was recently cloned and designated Nramp (natural resistance-associated macrophage protein). Nramp is part of a small family of at least two genes, Nramp1 and Nramp2. Primer extension and cDNA cloning were used to isolate the complete 5' end of the Nramp1 mRNA.

Sera from 11 perinatally HIV1-infected Rwandan children with prolonged survival were tested in vitro for the presence of neutralizing antibodies against different HIV1 strains. These 11 sera from long survivor (LS) children were compared with 16 sera from Rwandan children with AIDS. Sera from HIV1-infected children exhibited the greatest neutralizing activity against HIV1MN cell-free infection.

To assess septic meningitis in pediatric units in terms of the bacteriologic distribution, mortality, and groups at risk, we conducted a retrospective study in the pediatric department of the Kigali Hospital Center (Rwanda). Based on bacteriologic study of 1215 cerebrospinal fluid samples, there were 321 cases of septic meningitis due to identifiable germs and 68 involving cloudy fluid with no detectable germs, i.e.

This article describes the current capabilities and future potential of robots designed as supplements or replacements for human assistants or as tools for education and rehabilitation. A number of researchers have developed and tested a variety of robot assistants for individuals with disabilities. These robots can usually be classified as educational, vocational or independent-living assistants.

To approximate the contributions of in utero, intrapartum, and postnatal transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) and to evaluate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as a diagnostic tool for pediatric HIV infection, blood was collected at birth (cord blood), and at 3, 6-12, and 13-24 months in 218 children born to HIV-1-seropositive mothers in Kigali, Rwanda. Proviral DNA was detected by a double PCR using two sets of three primers (gag, pol, and env). Pediatric HIV-1 infection was defined according to serological and clinical criteria.

Five questions were raised in 1986 regarding routine immunization of children infected by the HIV: do vaccines protect these children, both in terms of immunogenicity and clinical efficacy? is immunization, particularly with live attenuated vaccines associated with an increased risk of adverse events? could the stimulation by vaccine antigens precipitate the course of paediatric HIV infection and therefore be dangerous? what are the clinical and epidemiological features of vaccine preventable diseases among HIV-infected children? what is the risk of nosocomial transmission of HIV associated with immunization practices? Based on the best available information, the WHO formulated recommendations in 1987 and updated them in 1989. These recommendations are in general agreement with those proposed during the same period in the USA and in France (table 1). This paper provides an update on the scientific knowledge in this field, focusing on routine childhood immunization in the context of HIV infection, especially in developing countries.

This paper describes the results of the program-development phase of the Vocational Training Facility (VTF) taking place at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center Rehabilitation Research and Development Center. The VTF staff has developed a self-paced, multimedia curriculum comprised of adapted training packages, interactive videos, and additional training and testing materials designed to teach entry-level desktop publishing and reasonable accommodation skills to individuals with spinal cord injuries. The curriculum is taught via the Macintoshâ„¢ computer to allow independent, "hands-off" access to training materials.

In multidrug-resistant (MDR) derivatives of the mouse lymphoid tumor P388, the emergence of MDR is associated with overexpression and transcriptional activation of the mdr3 gene, either in the absence of (P388/VCR-10) or concomitant with (P388/ADM-2) gene amplification. In both instances, Northern (RNA) blotting analyses have suggested the presence of altered mdr3 transcripts in these cells, possibly originating from novel transcription initiation sites. The mechanisms underlying mdr3 overexpression in these cells have been investigated.

Objective: The results of developmental testing of 218 children born to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive mothers and infected or uninfected themselves were compared with those of 218 children born to HIV-seronegative mothers in an ongoing cohort study in Kigali, Rwanda.

Methods: When the children were 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age, a specific neurodevelopmental examination was performed blindly by study physicians assessing gross motor development, fine motor development, language acquisition, and social contacts.

Results: Only one acute severe HIV-related encephalopathy was identified among the 50 infected children.
