Microalgae biofuel could be the next step in avoiding the excessive use of fossil fuels and reducing negative impacts on the environment. In the present study, two species of microalgae (Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlorella vulgaris) were used for biomass production, grown in dairy wastewater treated by activated sludge systems. Winery wastewater (WW) was used as growth media for the cyanobacteria Arthrospira maxima and the green microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus, Auxenochlorella protothecoides and Chlorella vulgaris, under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions. The latter species stands out under mixotrophic conditions, with removals of TOC and TN above 90%.
