Adeno-associated viruses 2 (AAV2) are minute viruses renowned for their capacity to infect human cells and akin organisms. They have recently emerged as prominent candidates in the field of gene therapy, primarily attributed to their inherent non-pathogenic nature in humans and the safety associated with their manipulation. The efficacy of AAV2 as gene therapy vectors hinges on their ability to infiltrate host cells, a phenomenon reliant on their competence to construct a capsid capable of breaching the nucleus of the target cell.

Effects of Flap Design on the Periodontal Health of Second Lower Molars after Impacted Third Molar Extraction.

The purpose of this study was to compare the envelope flap and triangular flap for impacted lower third molar (M3) extraction and their effects on the periodontal health of adjacent second molars (M2). A population of 60 patients undergoing M3 extraction with the envelope flap (Group A) or triangular flap (Group B) was analyzed, comparing probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and gingival recession (REC) recorded at six sites (disto-lingual, mid-lingual, mesio-lingual, disto-vestibular, mid-vestibular, and mesio-vestibular) before (T) and 6 months after extraction (T). There was a statistically significant mean difference in PPD and CAL at two sites, disto-vestibular (dv) and disto-lingual (dl), between values recorded before and 6 months after surgery for either Group A or Group B.

Surgical management of rectal GIST. A case report and a review of literature.

The Effectiveness of Chlorhexidine and Air Polishing System in the Treatment of Infected Dental Implants: An Experimental In Vitro Study.

Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease with an increasing diffusion rate which can affect the long-term survival of a prosthetic rehabilitation. The present study focused on the decontaminating efficacy of chlorhexidine and air polishing system with sodium bicarbonate powder against , a microorganism which seems to have a superinfecting opportunistic role in the pathology. The aim of the authors was to investigate and compare the effectiveness of these treatments, commonly used in clinical practice.

α-Synuclein oligomers in skin biopsy of idiopathic and monozygotic twin patients with Parkinson's disease.

A variety of cellular processes, including vesicle clustering in the presynaptic compartment, are impaired in Parkinson's disease and have been closely associated with α-synuclein oligomerization. Emerging evidence proves the existence of α-synuclein-related pathology in the peripheral nervous system, even though the presence of α-synuclein oligomers in situ in living patients remains poorly investigated. In this case-control study, we show previously undetected α-synuclein oligomers within synaptic terminals of autonomic fibres in skin biopsies by means of the proximity ligation assay and propose a procedure for their quantification (proximity ligation assay score).

Pulmonary hamartoma mimicking a mediastinal cyst-like lesion in a heavy smoker.

Pulmonary hamartoma (PH) is the most common benign tumor of the lung, typically presenting as a peripheral solitary nodule with round shape and smooth margins. The main computed tomography (CT) features that allow a confident diagnosis of PH are intranodular fat and popcorn-like calcifications. However, the presence of these features within PHs is variable.

Rapid and label-free detection of ochratoxin A and aflatoxin B1 using an optical portable instrument.

In this study, we report a novel assay for the combined on site detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and ochratoxin A (OTA), through a colorimetric biosensing system for AFB1 and a fluorimetric detection for OTA, exploiting the capability of the portable fibre optic spectrometer to perform both analyses. AFB1 was detected using the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme that is inhibited by this toxin, and the degree of inhibition was quantified by the Ellman's spectrophotometric method, obtaining a detection limit of 10 µg L(-1). OTA quantification was performed by monitoring its intrinsic fluorescence in methanol, reaching a detection limit of 0.

New-generation filler based on cross-linked carboxymethylcellulose: study of 350 patients with 3-year follow-up.

Purpose: In recent years there has been a growing interest in nonsurgical procedures for facial rejuvenation. Hyaluronic acid is currently the most widely used dermal filler for the treatment of facial wrinkles. However, new products with interesting features are being introduced into the market.

Use of cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose for soft-tissue augmentation: preliminary clinical studies.

Purpose: The continual search for new products for soft-tissue augmentation has in recent years led to the introduction of long lasting alternatives to hyaluronic acids and collagen that are composed of other polymers able to improve clinical persistence over time. This is the first report in which sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) has been chemically treated by the cross-linking process and thus used as a hydrogel for soft-tissue augmentation through injection with thin needles. The study evaluates, from a clinical point of view, the behavior of cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel used in the aesthetic field and its side effects so as to check the safety and performance of the polymer following intradermal injections.

Parenteral nutrition in ventilated patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: long chain vs medium chain triglycerides.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of a lipid formulation containing a physical mixture of medium (MCT) and long chain triglycerides (LCT) compared with a long chain triglycerides emulsion in patients affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with acute respiratory failure.

Methods: Twenty-four patients requiring mechanical ventilation were randomly selected in 2 groups and received total parenteral nutrition. Twelve patients received a MCT/LCT emulsion (50:50), the others used a 100% LCT emulsion.

Use of strong opioids in advanced cancer pain: a randomized trial.

The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the treatment of cancer pain recommend nonopioid analgesics as first-line therapy, so-called "weak" analgesics combined with nonopioid analgesics as second-line therapy, and so-called "strong" opioids (with nonopioid analgesics) only as third-line therapy. However, these guidelines can be questioned with regard to the extent of efficacy as well as the rationale for not using strong opioids as first-line treatment, especially in terminal cancer patients. The purpose of this randomized study was to prospectively compare the efficacy and tolerability of strong opioids as first-line agents with the recommendations of the WHO in terminal cancer patients.

Ganglioneuroma of the neck, masquerading as a goiter.

We report a case of patient with a suspected goiter which proved ganglioneuroma adjacent to the thyroid gland. Preoperative studies were not diagnostic. Ganglioneuroma should be kept in mind during the differential diagnosis of goiter.

[Effects of the transformation of parental roles on the development of the child's personality].

This article reports research that tried to make the father's commitment to the child's development more apparent. Based in extensive research, they differenciated two groups of 17 babies: children brought up "only and primarily by the mother"; and children brought up "as much by the father as the mother" -- a balanced sample group regarding age and sex. The dependent variable was revealed by a check of observable relational and motor skills inside a day-care center: each child was watched for 10 minutes at each of ten sessions of recreational activity, for a total of 100 minutes.
