Catastrophic Antiphospholipid Syndrome (CAPS) is a rare complication that can occur in patients with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS). CAPS occurs even more rarely during pregnancy/puerperium and pregnant patients, even less likely to show cardiac involvement without signs of damage on ultrasound and angiography with non-obstructive coronary arteries. We present a case of a 26-year-old breastfeeding woman, the youngest described with CAPS and acute myocardial infarction, whose diagnosis was made with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI).

Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic infection that affects mainly individuals with weakened immune system. Devices used in the oral area to treat this condition include buccal films, which present advantages over both oral tablets and gels. A new tioconazole (TCZ) mucoadhesive film, based on a biodegradable chitosan/ hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (CH/HPMC) blend, was developed for treatment of vaginal candidiasis. The formulation was optimized through an I-optimal design (minimizing the integral of the prediction variance across the factor space), where the impact of the proportion of the ingredients and processing variables on the quality of the final product was evaluated. Bee pollen is made by honey bees () from the pollen of plants and flowers and represents an apiary product enriched in essential amino acids, polyphenols, omega-3, and omega-6 fatty acids. This study investigated the botanical origin, micronutrient profile, and antioxidant activity of bee pollen samples ( = 10) harvested in Lucca and Massa Carrara (Tuscany, Italy) between 2016 and 2017. The palynological analysis showed that bee pollen samples were composed of nine botanical families.

People with weakened immune systems are at risk of developing candidiasis which is a fungal infection caused by several species of Candida genus. In this work, polymeric nanoparticles containing miconazole nitrate and the anesthetic lidocaine clorhydrate were developed. Miconazole was chosen as a typical drug to treat buccopharyngeal candidiasis whereas lidocaine may be useful in the management of the pain burning, and pruritus caused by the infection.

Sildenafil citrate causes vasodilatation, relaxation of the smooth muscle, and reduction of pulmonary arterial pressure. The latter property makes sildenafil citrate efficient for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including pulmonary arterial hypertension. Albendazole (ABZ) and mebendazole (MBZ) are the 2 most commonly used drugs in the treatment of soil-transmitted helminth infections in humans, but their performance is hampered by low solubility and physicochemical properties. We developed different formulations (β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes, chitosan-based microcrystals (CH), and polyvinyl alcohol and polysorbate 80-based nanoparticles [P80]) of ABZ and MBZ with an improved in vitro solubility profile and tested their activities in vitro and in vivo against the hookworm Heligmosomoides polygyrus. We found that all formulations tested showed a faster and higher dissolution level and were more active than the standard drugs.

Background: Despite significant strides in understanding the pathophysiology of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), these neoplasms typically present with intrinsic chemo- and radiotherapeutic resistance. Transcriptomic analyses of patient NSCLC tumors stratified by survival times have identified the PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) as a molecular governor of tumor aggressiveness and patient survival time.
