Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the importance of including indirect costs and benefits from education when evaluating the economic impact of mental and behavioral disorders, which is often overlooked.
  • A scoping review identified 177 articles, revealing 61 different education-related costs and benefits, but the terminology used to describe these was inconsistent and context-dependent.
  • This research is the first to classify these costs and benefits systematically, emphasizing their significant effect on education and suggesting that they should be factored into health policy assessments.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the importance of intersectoral costs and benefits (ICBs) related to mental and behavioral disorders (MBDs) in healthcare, education, and criminal justice.
  • An online survey conducted with 39 experts revealed that while most (68%) agreed that ICBs are relevant, only a minority (32%) actually included them in economic evaluations.
  • Key findings identified "special education school attendance," "absenteeism," and "decreased criminal activity" as the most significant ICBs, suggesting that these factors should be considered in economic evaluations of MBD interventions.
