Sixty-three patients with unilateral temporal- or frontal-lobe excisions and 14 normal control subjects were tested on a kinesthetic task in which they had to recall the end-position of arm movements determined by the examiner. Patients with left frontal-lobe or small right frontal-lobe excisions performed normally, whereas patients with temporal-lobe excisions that included extensive removal of the hippocampus performed poorly, but only after a delay during which an interpolated task was carried out. Subjects with large right frontal-lobe removals were impaired in delayed recall, and the presence of an interpolated task did not exacerbate the impairment, which was equal for the two arms.

Frontal or anterior temporal-lobe excision did not impair simple item recognition, and neither left nor right anterior-temporal lobectomy affected recency judgements on any task. In contrast, excisions that encroached on the mid-lateral frontal cortex impaired verbal recency judgements, the deficit being mild after right frontal lobectomy.

Temporal lobectomy did not interfere with performance. Patients with left frontal-lobe or small right frontal-lobe excisions also performed normally, whereas those with large right frontal-lobe removals were impaired, the deficit being equal for the two arms.

Between 20 and 25% of children born to seropositive mothers are believed to be infected and more than 90% of mothers whose children are found to be seropositive are themselves infected. If transplacental route appears to be exceptional or poorly documented, transmission by breast-feeding has been proved by virological, experimental and epidemiological arguments and is a major mode of contamination.

To evaluate the use of WB as a basis for applying these criteria, we conducted a study of two types of WB and compared them with RIPA patterns. The first part of the work, performed with 40 African sera, used Dupont de Nemours commercialized WB and an 'in-house' WB.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOEs) were recorded in a group of normally hearing subjects (29 ears) and a group of subjects whose conditions were diagnosed as sensorineural hearing loss (23 ears) to study any correlation that might exist between DPOE characteristics and hearing impairment of different configurations. Three different DPOE paradigms have been used to investigate the influence of different test parameters on the DPOE data for normal and hearing-impaired ears. All normally hearing ears demonstrated detectable DPOEs, provided that the primary tone level was above a certain value.

The tests studied were indirect immunofluorescence, particle agglutination from Fujirebio, and two enzyme immunoassays, one from Abbott Laboratories that used virus lysate from HUT 102 cells and the other from Cambridge BioScience Corp. that used an env recombinant protein.

In the study reported herein, we developed and evaluated competitive enzyme-immunoassays (CEIA-1 for the detection of antibody to HIV-1, CEIA-2 for the detection of antibody to HIV-2) to discriminate serologically between HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections. In most of the cases, the serotyping of known reactive serum samples was done easily with the CEIAs, showing a similar specificity to the Western blot.

Trained in an intuitive style of chaplaincy, the staff distrusted a clinical approach to pastoral care. Nonetheless, when they found themselves scrambling to justify their existence, the entire department staff literally withdrew from the hospital for two days to redesign pastoral care.

Five thousand and twenty-nine sera from European blood donors and 403 sera from central African blood donors were used in the evaluation, along with four panels and one cohort. The panels included 99 'problem' sera, 733 sera with antibodies to HIV-1 from asymptomatic people and from patients at different disease stages, 25 serial bleeds from five plasmapheresis donors seroconverting for antibodies to HIV-1, and 202 sera with antibodies to HIV-2 collected from healthy and diseased people of European or west African origin.

Screening for human immunodeficiency viruses types 1 and 2 (HIV-1 and HIV-2) antibodies was carried out in the serum of 1,245 leprous patients and 5,731 controls selected in nine different centers from the Congo, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Yemen Arab Republic. In Yemen, all sera were negative. In the Congo, the seropositivity among patients and controls was, respectively, 3.

A large cross-sectional serologic survey for human T cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) antibody was conducted in 3,177 Ivory Coast residents to evaluate the prevalence of HTLV-1 and to determine possible risk factors and correlates of HTLV-1 infection. Of the 3,177 serum samples, 110 (3.5%) were positive for antibody to HTLV-1 by indirect immunofluorescence assay and Western blot.
