Supportive public policies are suggested as ways to lessen gentrification's impact for older adults. While explicit policies designed to help older adults with gentrification are rare, literature on age-friendly cities is a close proxy. We utilized three North American cases undergoing gentrification: New York City, NY, and Denver, CO, in the United States and Hamilton, in Ontario, Canada, to present existing neighbourhood-based policies as social determinants of health in housing, resource access, healthcare, transportation, and communal places.

Age is a risk factor for hematologic malignancies. Attributes of the aging hematopoietic system include increased myelopoiesis, impaired adaptive immunity, and a functional decline of the hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that maintain hematopoiesis. Changes in the composition of diverse HSC subsets have been suggested to be responsible for age-related alterations, however, the underlying regulatory mechanisms are incompletely understood in the context of HSC heterogeneity.

The 2023-2032 Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey prioritized the Uranus Orbiter and Probe (UOP) mission concept as the next priority flagship mission. The UOP concept includes scientific studies of the Uranian moon system. Although the Uranian moons differ greatly from the ocean worlds in the Jovian and Saturnian systems, the emerging hypothesis is that some of them could at least sustain thin, potentially concentrated, oceans.

Liquid-infused polymers are recognized for their ability to repel foulants, making them promising for biomedical applications including catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). However, the impact of the quantity of free liquid layer covering the surface on protein and bacterial adhesion is not well understood. Here, we explore how the amount of free silicone liquid layer in infused silicone catheter materials influences the adhesion of bacteria and proteins relevant to CAUTIs.

Progress in cytokine engineering is driving therapeutic translation by overcoming these proteins' limitations as drugs. The IL-2 cytokine is a promising immune stimulant for cancer treatment but is limited by its concurrent activation of both pro-inflammatory immune effector cells and antiinflammatory regulatory T cells, toxicity at high doses, and short serum half-life. One approach to improve the selectivity, safety, and longevity of IL-2 is complexing with anti-IL-2 antibodies that bias the cytokine toward immune effector cell activation.

Forest fertilization with municipal biosolids has been shown to increase tree growth and enhance forest soils. However, there are concerns that nitrogen from the biosolids could impact surface waters through movement from subsurface flow. Here we analyzed data on soil and surface water nitrogen from a working tree plantation that has used biosolids for over three decades to see if there was evidence of N movement through the soil to surface waters.

Cytokines constitute a class of secreted proteins that activate transmembrane receptors to coordinate a vast array of physiological processes, particularly those related to immune activity. Due to their vital role in immune regulation, cytokines have garnered great interest as potential therapeutic agents. Unfortunately, the clinical success of cytokine drugs has been limited by their multifunctional activities, which hinder therapeutic performance and lead to harmful toxicities.

In this review, we explore the inconsistencies in the data and gaps in our knowledge that exist in what is currently known regarding gill chemosensors which drive the cardiorespiratory reflexes in fish. Although putative serotonergic neuroepithelial cells (NEC) dominate the literature, it is clear that other neurotransmitters are involved (adrenaline, noradrenaline, acetylcholine, purines, and dopamine). And although we assume that these agents act on neurons synapsing with the NECs or in the afferent or efferent limbs of the paths between chemosensors and central integration sites, this process remains elusive and may explain current discrepancies or species differences in the literature.

MicroRNA169 (miR169) has been implicated in multi-stress regulation in annual species such as Arabidopsis, maize and rice. However, there is a lack of experimental functional and mechanistic studies of miR169 in plants, especially in perennial species, and its impact on plant growth and development remains unexplored. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is a widespread environmental pollutant with a long half-life and clearly negative outcomes on metabolic diseases such as fatty liver disease and diabetes. Male and female Cyp2b-null and humanized CYP2B6-transgenic (hCYP2B6-Tg) mice were treated with 0, 1, or 10 mg/kg/day PFOS for 21 days, and surprisingly it was found that PFOS was retained at greater concentrations in the serum and liver of hCYP2B6-Tg mice than those of Cyp2b-null mice, with greater differences in the females. Thus, Cyp2b-null and hCYP2B6-Tg mice provide new models for investigating individual mechanisms for PFOS bioaccumulation and toxicity.

T cells are critical mediators of antigen-specific immune responses and are common targets for immunotherapy. Biomaterial scaffolds have previously been used to stimulate antigen-presenting cells to elicit antigen-specific immune responses; however, structural and molecular features that directly stimulate and expand naïve, endogenous, tumor-specific T cells in vivo have not been defined. Here, an artificial lymph node (aLN) matrix is created, which consists of an extracellular matrix hydrogel conjugated with peptide-loaded-MHC complex (Signal 1), the co-stimulatory signal anti-CD28 (Signal 2), and a tethered IL-2 (Signal 3), that can bypass challenges faced by other approaches to activate T cells in situ such as vaccines.

Traumatic or degenerative joint pain is abundant in the population. Symptom relief by intra- and periarticular glucocorticoid administration is frequently used, however may have potentially devastating effects, changing the normal healing process of the joint. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are important for wound-healing processes due to their multipotency in regenerating osteoblasts, chondrocytes and adipocytes but also have immunomodulatory properties.

The habitability of Europa is a property within a system, which is driven by a multitude of physical and chemical processes and is defined by many interdependent parameters, so that its full characterization requires collaborative investigation. To explore Europa as an integrated system to yield a complete picture of its habitability, the Europa Clipper mission has three primary science objectives: (1) characterize the ice shell and ocean including their heterogeneity, properties, and the nature of surface-ice-ocean exchange; (2) characterize Europa's composition including any non-ice materials on the surface and in the atmosphere, and any carbon-containing compounds; and (3) characterize Europa's geology including surface features and localities of high science interest. The mission will also address several cross-cutting science topics including the search for any current or recent activity in the form of thermal anomalies and plumes, performing geodetic and radiation measurements, and assessing high-resolution, co-located observations at select sites to provide reconnaissance for a potential future landed mission.

Silicone urinary catheters infused with silicone liquid offer an effective alternative to antibiotic coatings, reducing microbial adhesion while decreasing bladder colonization and systemic dissemination. However, loss of free silicone liquid from the surface into the host system is undesirable. To reduce the potential for liquid loss, free silicone liquid was removed from the surface of liquid-infused catheters by either removing excess liquid from fully infused samples or by partial infusion.

The Galileo mission to Jupiter revealed that Europa is an ocean world. The Galileo magnetometer experiment in particular provided strong evidence for a salty subsurface ocean beneath the ice shell, likely in contact with the rocky core. Within the ice shell and ocean, a number of tectonic and geodynamic processes may operate today or have operated at some point in the past, including solid ice convection, diapirism, subsumption, and interstitial lake formation.

Pentagalloyl glucose (PGG) is currently being investigated as a non-surgical treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs); however, the molecular mechanisms of action of PGG on the AAA matrix components and the intra-luminal thrombus (ILT) still need to be better understood. To assess these interactions, we utilized peptide fingerprinting and molecular docking simulations to predict the binding of PGG to vascular proteins in normal and aneurysmal aorta, including matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), cytokines, and fibrin. We performed PGG diffusion studies in pure fibrin gels and human ILT samples.

In mammals, cardiorespiratory reflexes originating in the carotid body (CB) help maintain homeostasis by matching oxygen supply to oxygen demand. CB output to the brainstem is shaped by synaptic interactions at a "tripartite synapse" consisting of chemosensory (type I) cells, abutting glial-like (type II) cells, and sensory (petrosal) nerve terminals. Type I cells are stimulated by several blood-borne metabolic stimuli, including the novel chemoexcitant lactate.

Tert-Butylhydroquinone (tBHQ), a preservative used to prevent oxidative deterioration of oil, fat, and meat products, has been linked to both chemoprotective and adverse effects. This study investigates the impact of dietary tBHQ consumption on survival, growth parameters, organ development, and gene expression in zebrafish (Danio rerio). As tBHQ activates the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2a), a zebrafish line with a mutation in the DNA-binding domain of Nrf2a was used to identify Nrf2a-dependent vs independent effects.
