Development and evaluation of a simulation-based mastery learning maintenance of certification course.

Background/objectives: To develop and evaluate a post-acute care simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) continuing medical education (CME)/maintenance of certification (MOC) procedure course.

Design: Pretest-posttest study of the SBML intervention.

Setting: A 2-day post-acute care procedures course.

Task-based phantom evaluation of cardiac catheterization imaging modes.

This study aimed to quantify the dose and quality of the preprogrammed imaging modes on two cardiac angiography devices (Philips Allura FD10 Clarity and Allura FD10) using a task-specific in-house phantom, and to discuss the appropriateness of the pre-programmed settings. A Figure of Merit (FOM), defined as the squared Signal Difference to Noise Ratio (SDNR) divided by Entrance Surface Air Kerma (ESAK), was calculated for phantom inserts with different sizes and concentrations of iodine, as well as tin foils. For the Allura FD10 Clarity device, the low dose fluoroscopic mode was found to be very dose efficient, while the available ciné modes should only be used for cases with high demand for contrast and temporal resolutions.

Role of with-no-lysine [K] kinases in the pathogenesis of Gordon's syndrome.

Gordon's syndrome, also known as pseudohypoaldosteronism type II (PHA II) or familial hypertension with hyperkalemia, is an autosomal-dominant disease characterized by hypertension, hyperkalemia, hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, and normal glomerular filtration rate. Recent positional cloning has linked mutations of WNK1 and WNK4 to Gordon's syndrome. With-no-lysine [K] (WNK) kinases are a new family of large serine-threonine protein kinases with an atypical placement of the catalytic lysine.

Simian virus 40 small tumor antigen induces deregulation of the actin cytoskeleton and tight junctions in kidney epithelial cells.

There is increasing evidence that the transforming DNA tumor virus simian virus 40 (SV40) is associated with human malignancies. SV40 small tumor antigen (small t) interacts with endogenous serine/threonine protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) and is required for the transforming activity of SV40 in epithelial cells of the lung and kidney. Here, we show that expression of SV40 small t in epithelial MDCK cells induces acute morphological changes and multilayering.

Early detection of cysteine rich protein 61 (CYR61, CCN1) in urine following renal ischemic reperfusion injury.

Background: Acute renal failure (ARF) has a high morbidity and mortality. Many therapies have worked in animals but were unsuccessful in clinical trials. The inability to diagnose ARF early may have impaired the success of these trials.
