This paper deals with a literature survey on natriuretic peptides (NP) and their clinical use in prognostic stratification and therapy of arterial hypertension and cardiac failure. After a brief historical introduction, the phylogenesis of NP is analyzed and the reasons of their preservation in the evolution are emphasized. The biochemistry of the NP is then treated, and the structure, synthesis, mechanism of cellular action and systems of regulation are analyzed.

F2-isoprostanes (F2-IP) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), peroxidation products of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), are considered the most reliable indicators of endogenous lipid peroxidation in vivo. To determine to what extent these are also altered in patients with alcoholic liver disease, plasma free and esterified F2-IP as well as 4-HNE were measured by GC/MS in 49 fasting subjects who underwent diagnostic percutaneous needle biopsies of the liver. Compared to patients with mild steatosis and no fibrosis, free F2-IP and 4-HNE were strikingly increased in individuals with alcoholic hepatitis.

The literature on public administration and on health reform has recommended many processes of institutional reform and development, building on private sector management techniques, popularized by 'reinventing government' and 'total quality management'. More recently, thoughtful insights have emphasized improving public management through a focus on creating 'public value'; on political, as well as administrative, leadership; improving institutional performance through strengthening the 'task networks' of organizations needed to achieve strategic objectives; and creating a learning culture within the organization.

To determine whether this also occurs in other species, and whether the beadlet carrier itself contributes to the toxicity, rats were given for 2 mo vitamin A (1.4 U/J), beta-carotene (4.

Methods: F2-isoprostanes (F2-IPs) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) were measured in bile collected during 31 ERCP procedures using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
Results: In 11 subjects with normal ERCP (controls), bile contained significant amounts of F2-IPs (188 +/- 27 pg/ml) and 4-HNE (37.
Background/aims: Polyenylphosphatidylcholine protects against alcoholic cirrhosis in the baboon and carbon tetrachloride-induced cirrhosis in rats. This study addresses the possible mechanism of the protective effect of polyenylphosphatidylcholine.
Methods: For 8 weeks, rats were injected with either carbon tetrachloride in peanut oil or peanut oil alone (control), and pair-fed nutritionally adequate liquid diets with equivalent amounts of linoleic acid either as polyenylphosphatidylcholine or as safflower oil.
Background: Several weeks of prophylactic anticoagulation are routinely prescribed before and after electrical cardioversion of atrial fibrillation. Recent studies have supported the use of transesophageal echocardiography to guide early cardioversion: patients in whom no thrombus is observed are treated with heparin followed by one month of warfarin therapy after the procedure. This kind of treatment requires hospital admission during heparin infusion, because of the need for monitoring partial thromboplastin time.

Research Design And Methods: Brain stem, middle-, and long-latency auditory-evoked responses and evoked otoacoustic emissions were measured in 48 normally hearing IDDM patients and in age- and sex-matched nondiabetic subjects. Peripheral neuropathy was diagnosed by nerve conduction velocity (NCV) at the peroneal and sural nerves.

Diets supplemented with polyunsaturated fatty acids or triglycerides exacerbate alcohol-induced liver injury in rats, whereas, in baboons, polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC) protects against alcohol-induced fibrosis and cirrhosis. Because the aggravation in rats was attributed to enhanced lipid peroxidation, the present study was undertaken to assess parameters of oxidative stress in percutaneous liver biopsies of baboons fed alcohol, with or without PPC (2.8 g per 1000 calories).

We observed that in vivo treatment with LPS produces a strong increase of MnSOD mRNA levels and a weak induction of an inactive protein in rat hepatocarcinomas. In normal liver iron deficiency, obtained with desferrioxamine administration, produces a decrease in the MnSOD induction by LPS, indicating that such induction could depend on tissue iron content.

To address the issue of its role in tumour transformation and progression in vivo, we evaluated the content of this enzyme in 33 brain tumours of neuroepithelial origin with different degrees of differentiation (WHO grade II-IV) by means of Western blot and immunohistology. Our results show that immunoreactive MnSOD increases in a direct relationship with tumour grade and is therefore inversely correlated with differentiation.

Cases: Three fetuses with akinesia deformation sequence are described: two with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and one with Pena-Shokeir syndrome. Each was demonstrated by serial real-time ultrasound examinations to have joint contractures, absent fetal breathing motions, and lack of gross movements other than sonographically evident subtle seizure activity.

In vivo experiments demonstrate that rat liver manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) is up-regulated at the transcriptional level following the inactivation of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD). CuZnSOD activity was inhibited by the administration of the copper chelating agent diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC). This CuZnSOD inactivation is likely associated with an intracellular oxidative stress.

Methods: To compare the plasma and biliary concentrations of carotenoids, retinoids and tocopherols among controls and patients with biliary and pancreatic diseases, these compounds were measured by high performance liquid chromatography in bile collected during 41 endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies.
Results: In 14 subjects with normal endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (controls), bile contained beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lycopene, cryptoxanthin, lutein+zeaxanthin (23.

The aim of this research was to identify any early cardiovascular changes that may be predictive of future hypertension in young subjects with family history of hypertension. The study was conducted on 25 offspring of hypertensive parents, mean age 17 years (22 with hypertension only in 1 parent and 3 with both hypertensive parents) and 20 offspring of both normotensive parents, matched by age. Subjects were divided into children (7-13 years) and young adults (19 years on).

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has been used to identify patients without thrombus, who potentially could undergo CV without anticoagulation. However, embolic events after CV in patients without evidence of thrombus on TEE have recently been reported.
